Chapter 96 - Chapter 97: The Shadow in the Layered Peaks

"Actually, there's one more thing I haven't told you." Amir thought for a moment, then revealed the truth about his origins.

Previously, Amir had deliberately hidden Gideon's reason for capturing him, brushing it off with the excuse that he possessed important information the Empire wanted.

"How is that possible? You've been on Coruscant since you were a kid. I watched you grow up," Veronica questioned, disbelief written on her face.

Amir found the situation strange himself, but he couldn't refute the facts.

"Incredible." Ahsoka also fell into deep thought. Although she had harbored similar suspicions, she hadn't expected such a bizarre confirmation.

"You need a more comprehensive check-up!" Hak habitually pushed up his glasses. "Although your body hasn't shown any problems all these years, we can't guarantee there are no side effects. Whether it's a sudden latent illness or rapid cellular degeneration... these are unacceptable risks."

Hearing Hak's words, Amir also became a little nervous. He hadn't worried about other things, but regarding his own body, he was unsure.

After reading the stolen data and seeing the large number of test subjects who died from various illnesses and gene-editing accidents, Amir's concern deepened.

"I suspect my perception of the Force has also been affected. My connection has been strengthening rapidly recently," Amir voiced his concern.

"That's not necessarily strange. In the Jedi Archives, there were many cases of rapid strengthening of Force sensitivity during times of stress or awakening. Besides, you only recently started formal training. You might just be tapping into your latent potential."

Hearing Ahsoka's words, Amir felt much more at ease.

This worry stemmed only from the intense stimulation of the past few days. After a while, Amir would find it hard to keep these heavy thoughts on his mind.

You could call it optimism, or you could see it as the open-mindedness of someone who had already died once. His mindset was always focused on the present. He might have some expectations for the future, but he would never get lost in them.

Worrying about future wars, worrying about suffering people... it was better to eat a good meal, then continue training himself, become stronger, and play a more important role when the time came.

Besides, there was currently no evidence his body had any problems. Even if it was proven he only had a few years to live, Amir would focus on the task at hand, strive to bring down the Empire before he died, and then go honorably to meet Qui-Gon Jinn in the netherworld of the Force.

Of course, he'd have to learn how to become a Force Ghost first.

"We don't have the right equipment here. But we have a member who runs a clinic on a private space station. You can go to him. I'll send you his contact information," Hak said.

"A clinic?" Amir was puzzled.

A general clinic couldn't perform complex genetic examinations. His old acquaintance Victor on Coruscant could only treat simple illnesses; having a retired military medical pod was considered a top-tier configuration there. Other places only had old, dilapidated bacta tanks, and you just had to lie in them no matter what the illness was.

"'Clinic' is just a name, mostly to satisfy his hobby. The entire space station actually belongs to him. It has a lot of smuggled top-tier equipment," Hak explained.

Ahsoka chimed in. "He is an important benefactor of ours. We got many of our ships from him, as well as a lot of technical support..."

"Thank you," Amir said sincerely.

Ahsoka and the others were already treating him completely as a comrade. This time, they had revealed such an important benefactor to him. This kind of information was usually restricted to the highest echelon of the cell.

"Don't mention it. You've helped us a lot, too," Ahsoka said.

"Also, Hak, I need you to analyze this batch of data." Amir sent a copy of the stolen files to Hak's datapad. "The part of the data about me is encrypted. I can't crack it at the moment."

"Leave it to me."

So reliable. Amir sighed inwardly. I really want to recruit him as my first mate.

The annoying signal jammer was still on. However, the method Gideon used to track him was likely buried in that data. Once decrypted, he could get rid of the endless pursuit.

"We're close," Ahsoka said from the co-pilot's seat, looking at the map in her hand.

"We found the coordinates for an ancient temple here from the holocron. The record is very vague. If it weren't on Gulina's home planet, we wouldn't have even noticed it."

"Has it been explored?" Amir began scanning for a place to land.

"Not yet. Before you arrived, we only checked it from the air with the scanners. We didn't find anything significant."

Hak suddenly interrupted. "Just one thing. We detected a large life signal. It should be a massive creature, but the fog is too thick to confirm visually."

"It's probably a rare native species. Gulina and her tribe members have no idea either." Ahsoka didn't pay it much mind.

Many planets had undiscovered rare creatures. Perhaps their habitat was well-hidden, or perhaps they were nearly extinct. It was normal that the locals didn't recognize it.

Moreover, they had flown halfway across the planet from the settlement to here. It was too far from Gulina's tribe; the biosphere had changed greatly.

"The fog is too thick. I have to fly lower to see if there's any flat ground for landing."

Amir's eyes were sore, but he could only see vast white patches. This area was all mountains; a moment of carelessness and they could crash into a cliff face.

SCREEEE!

Suddenly, they all heard an extremely piercing cry echoing through the hull.

"That's it!" Hak said suddenly. "We vaguely heard a cry back then but couldn't confirm. Now we can be basically certain it's that creature."

Amir sensed the surroundings with the Force, but the valley was filled with various plants and small animals. The Living Force was muddled together, making it impossible to distinguish the source of the cry instantly.

"Above! Above!" Veronica suddenly shouted.

Only then did Amir realize the environment had grown dark.

They all snapped their heads up and saw a huge shadow overhead, blocking the faint sunlight.

The shadow merged with the silhouettes of the distant layered peaks, and Amir didn't react at first, thinking the dimness was because the mountains were blocking the light.

"Could it be!?" Ahsoka looked closely.

Flying creatures were much more troublesome than ground-based ones, especially for ships in atmosphere. An agile creature could easily damage a ship with weak defenses.

Fortunately, The Traveler's shields were military-grade. Amir wasn't too worried.

Especially since Amir sensed this creature had no malice. It was just circling in the vicinity out of wariness and curiosity.

"That's a big bird!" Veronica voiced exactly what everyone was thinking.
