Chapter 16: Star City 2046 & Jealousy's Jest
Star City 2046. Seriously, who thought a dystopian future would be this… gray? And full of sad, older versions of people I know? Adam, ever the connoisseur of bleak aesthetics, found himself subtly tucked away on the Waverider, having hitched a ride to this particular temporal aberration. The System, ever the helpful tour guide, chimed in.
[SYSTEM: Temporal Jump Complete. Destination: Star City 2046. Warning: Dystopian Future Detected. Suggestion: Avoid making any jokes about the future being bleak. It's already bleak.]
"Oh, System, you're no fun," Adam thought, adjusting his perfectly anachronistic t-shirt. "Besides, if I can't make jokes about the end of the world, what's even the point of time travel?"
He watched as the Legends disembarked, looking suitably grim. Rip Hunter was probably already calculating the exact percentage of despair in the air. Adam, however, had other priorities. Namely, continuing his relentless campaign to annoy Mick Rory.
He found Rory grumbling, as usual, about the lack of fire and the general unpleasantness of the future. Snart, ever the cool observer, was just smirking.
"Perfect," Adam mused. He focused, picturing a constantly changing, annoying jingle. Something catchy. Something that would burrow into Rory's brain and never leave. He settled on a distorted, high-pitched rendition of "It's a Small World."
[SYSTEM: Illusion deployed. Target: Mick Rory. Effect: Auditory Hallucination (Jingle).]
Rory's eyes widened. He slapped his hands over his ears. "What the…?! Snart, do you hear that?! It's… it's singing! About a small world!"
Snart raised an eyebrow, a flicker of amusement in his eyes. "You're hearing things, Rory. Lay off the… whatever they have in the future that makes you hallucinate children's songs."
"But it's so annoying!" Rory insisted, shaking his head furiously. "It's like… it's like a tiny, evil elf is singing in my brain!"
Adam, hidden nearby, stifled a giggle. "Oh, this is going to be a fun trip. Rory's going to be my personal symphony of suffering."
He then observed older Oliver Queen, looking suitably grizzled and burdened. Connor Hawke was there too, looking like he'd seen better days. Adam, ever the pop-culture enthusiast, couldn't resist.
He teleported subtly behind older Oliver, just for a second. "So, this is what happens when you don't listen to your friendly neighborhood time-traveler, huh, Ollie? All that brooding really takes a toll. You look like you've been mainlining angst for thirty years."
Older Oliver, mid-stare at a ruined building, flinched. He spun around, eyes narrowed, but Adam was already gone. Oliver shook his head, muttering, "I'm definitely losing it. Too many late nights."
"He's confused. He's intrigued. My work here is done," Adam thought, teleporting away.
He then saw a group of the new Deathstroke's goons, looking suitably menacing. Adam decided to try out his shapeshifting for a quick, comedic diversion. He transformed into a generic, very unthreatening bad guy – think a henchman from a low-budget 80s action movie, complete with a fake mustache and a comically oversized walkie-talkie.
He ran past the goons, yelling into his walkie-talkie, "Code Red! Code Red! The giant, sentient rubber duck has breached the perimeter! Repeat, the duck is loose!"
The goons, momentarily confused, exchanged bewildered glances. Adam, seizing the moment, teleported away, leaving them to wonder if they'd just heard a very strange radio transmission or if the dystopian future was finally getting to them.
As the Legends continued their grim mission, Adam flitted around, a chaotic, unseen force, subtly aiding them while driving Rory to the brink of sanity with his incessant jingle. "Star City 2046: successfully annoyed. Now, if only I could find a decent cup of coffee in this wasteland."
