"Harry Potter- Ravenclaw"Chapter 20: The Animagus Thesis Takes Shape
As Christmas drew near, Hogwarts grew livelier by the day. The corridors buzzed with students excitedly swapping plans—where they'd spend the holidays, what magical destinations they'd explore, and what mischief might await them outside the castle walls.
With the chatter about the Dueling Club finally dying down, Wyzett found himself breathing easier, able to slip back into the steady, familiar rhythm of his studies.
Lately, nearly all of Wyzett's focus had been devoted to the Animagus transformation. Every morning and evening, he followed the next step in the process: drawing his wand, pressing the tip against his heart, and reciting a long, winding incantation.
As he chanted, he could distinctly feel a second heartbeat echoing within his chest. Along with the pulse came a surge of inexplicable curiosity—and vivid images flickering through his mind.
He saw a wave-like blaze, a fire burning with fierce vitality. It felt hauntingly familiar—the very vision he'd glimpsed through his phoenix mark when Fawkes was reborn in flames.
That image of rebirth was always shifting, the fire growing denser with each day's practice, slowly taking on the shape of an egg.
This was why Wyzett planned to wait until after Christmas to venture into the Forbidden Forest, seeking out the mysterious altar and trying his hand at summoning a thunderstorm with a Weather Charm.
If his hunch was right, then his Animagus form might just be one of the rarest magical creatures of all—a phoenix.
With that hope burning within him, Wyzett officially set to work on his Animagus thesis.
After discussing with Professor McGonagall, he settled on his topic: "Improving the Success Rate and Safety of Animagus Transformation."
Given how few witches and wizards had ever succeeded—and how long the process took—he and Professor McGonagall were the only recent examples. That meant he had to scour the library for as much supporting literature as possible.
Whenever he wasn't in class, Wyzett could be found buried in the library stacks. By the time Christmas break arrived, he'd finished a detailed outline and even expanded it into a solid first draft.
…
After one lesson, Wyzett left the classroom alongside Professor McGonagall.
"What's this?" Professor McGonagall took the notebook he offered, her expression shifting in surprise. "Your Animagus thesis draft?"
"Yes, Professor McGonagall." Wyzett nodded, a little sheepish. "I've been tied up with so much lately."
"Between learning the Weather Charm and a few unexpected incidents, I had to put off the draft until just these past few days."
Professor McGonagall flipped through the notebook, page by page, her tone turning from astonished to impressed. "This level of completion…"
Wyzett blushed deeper. "I'm still holding off on the final step for… special reasons. So right now, it's just the early phases. I left the section on taking the potion during a thunderstorm blank, which probably makes a difference."
"Hmm…" Professor McGonagall murmured, looking at him with a sigh.
Just as Wyzett opened his mouth to explain, she patted him reassuringly on the shoulder. "Wyzett, you've already done a wonderful job!"
"That's not what I meant at all. The draft is actually quite thorough—just needs some tweaks in wording and argument. I can help with that!"
"Thank you, Professor McGonagall!" Wyzett nodded gratefully, a weight lifting from his shoulders. "You've already helped me so much…"
"If I'd had to track down all those Animagus references by myself, it would have taken ages. I might not have finished the draft until after Christmas."
"Don't put so much pressure on yourself," Professor McGonagall said warmly. "Take some time to relax! Enjoy the Christmas holidays ahead!"
Around the corner, Fred and George came to a sudden halt. Fred's jaw dropped. "George, was that really Professor McGonagall's voice?"
George looked just as stunned. "Unless the fireworks have deafened me, that was definitely McGonagall!"
"She actually told someone to relax!" Fred protested. "She's never said that to me!"
"Same here!" George agreed. "All I ever get is 'Make sure you finish your homework!'"
"I want to see who she's being so nice to!" Fred grabbed the edge of the wall, peeking around the corner.
"Me too!" George crouched and poked his head out as well.
"Oh, it's Wyzett…" Both twins' voices turned matter-of-fact. "Well, that explains it."
On the morning the Christmas holidays began, a heavy snow blanketed the grounds.
With a mournful whoooo-whoooo of the whistle, the Hogwarts Express slowly pulled out of the station, carrying students home.
The world outside was a blur of swirling white; buildings and trees faded into indistinct shapes, the scenery transformed by winter's brush.
But it was Wyzett who saw only a blank canvas of snow.
Luna, however, could always see something more.
She lounged by the window like a lazy cat, her head tilted, breath fogging the glass as she traced whimsical shapes with her finger. Every so often, she'd turn, eyes sparkling, and beckon for Wyzett to look—inviting him to see the secret worlds she'd drawn.
Wyzett had brought plenty of snacks. Whenever Luna looked back, he'd slip a treat into her palm.
"You have some too," Luna would say, breaking the snack in half and sharing it with him.
They passed the journey like that—drawing and nibbling—until the train finally rolled to a stop at Platform Nine and Three-Quarters, neither of them the least bit hungry.
"Sweetheart!"
Xenophilius's voice rang out, trembling with excitement.
"That's Daddy!" Luna cried, spinning toward the sound.
"I'll get the luggage," Wyzett reminded her.
"Mm!" Luna flashed him a radiant smile before dashing to her father, flinging herself into his arms. "Daddy! I missed you so much!"
"Daddy… Daddy missed you too!" Xenophilius's voice was thick with emotion, his nose and eyes both red.
Dragging the suitcase behind him, Wyzett greeted, "Mr. Lovegood, we're home."
Xenophilius nodded at him, beaming. "Good! Let's go home!"
