Wyzett drew two deep breaths, easing the lingering sense of breathlessness.
He blinked, uncertain if his eyes were playing tricks on him—a wisp of black energy floated before his face.
Instinctively, he opened his palm. The black wisp flicked its tiny tail, as if eager to burrow into his hand.
The instant it touched his skin, a burst of white light flashed—like a sieve, it cleansed the black wisp of malice before allowing it to truly merge into his palm.
Newt appeared before Wyzett, his expression tinged with curiosity and a hint of surprise. "It actually returned to you?"
Wyzett looked up at Newt, recalling that lingering question about the Obscurus—the strange, cyclical relationship between wizards and their Obscurus, almost like the riddle of the chicken and the egg.
In his youth, Newt had managed to separate Obscuruses from their hosts. He must have delved deeply into the mysteries of the Obscurus.
Perhaps the answers Wyzett sought could be found with him.
With that thought, he greeted politely, "Mr. Scamander, hello! Did you just say—it returned to me?"
"Oh, it's just a minor thing." Newt shook his head lightly, slipping his hand discreetly into his pocket.
Maintaining his Custodis Meditatio (Guardian's Meditation), Wyzett sensed the movement at once. In Newt's pocket, his fingers seemed to close around a small glass orb.
"Mr. Scamander, may I ask… what just entered my body—was it an Obscurus? I felt a powerful sense of familiarity."
"Yes, that's right." Now that Wyzett had spoken plainly, Newt saw no reason to hide it. He nodded. "Besides sightseeing, I came to Sweden to investigate the Obscurus."
Wyzett followed his lead. "We did encounter an Obscurus in this village."
"I came to this island because of the information you left in the wanted notice," Newt explained. "What happened to that Obscurus? Did it escape, or…"
"He became a sacrifice," Wyzett replied, mixing in his own speculation. "I suspect he was never truly a complete human to begin with…"
"We fought. He was incredibly unstable—seemed only to wield the innate powers of the Obscurus, like some form of potent Transfiguration."
"He could transform three sharks into humans, bringing them to this island for a carefully orchestrated revenge. In the end, he became the sacrifice."
"A sacrifice again?" Newt's brow furrowed. "So nothing was left behind?"
Wyzett nodded. "He was offered up to the World Tree that just vanished… He should be gone completely."
"Mr. Scamander, can an Obscurus become an Obscurial? I mean… is the process reversible?"
"If a wizard can become an Obscurial by suppressing their magic, could an Obscurus, through some form of magic, become an Obscurial again?"
"My experience with him led me to suspect that an Obscurus can exist independently… but I've only seen this one special case, so I don't know for sure."
"That's a profound question." Newt blinked and fell silent, thinking deeply. "Once, in Sudan, I met a girl…"
"She was an Obscurial as well, just eight years old. I was searching for Erumpents in Africa when I happened upon her losing control."
"With the help of local wizards, I managed to separate her Obscurus. But it was too late—the Obscurus had already consumed her. I couldn't save her life."
"I'm sorry, Mr. Scamander," Wyzett said quietly. "I didn't mean to bring up painful memories."
"You needn't apologize. It's all in the past." Newt let out a long sigh. "Besides, seeing you well puts my mind at ease."
"Hmm?" Wyzett made a small, questioning sound, a little puzzled.
"Back to our earlier topic." Newt touched his nose thoughtfully. "African wizards retain many ancient spellcasting customs and terms for various types of magic."
"For instance, they call ritual magic 'offerings' or 'sacrifices.' They also use hand gestures to cast spells, and only recently have wands become widespread…"
"As for Obscuruses and Obscurials, they have their own names. They call the Obscurus the 'Curse of Resentment,' and Obscurials the 'Hosts of the Curse.'"
"'Curse of Resentment' and 'Hosts of the Curse'?" Wyzett murmured, finding that these terms matched well with what he'd learned from Primordial Power: Obscurus Form (Basic).
"Yes." Newt nodded. "According to them, only wizards who loathe magic attract the Obscurus."
"Though the terminology differs, their views on what triggers the Obscurus are quite consistent."
"We used an ancient altar to separate the Obscurus from the Obscurial. The altar was covered in murals—very old ones."
"I actually drew copies of all of them, but when I went to New York, MACUSA confiscated them. I never got them back."
"What a shame!" Wyzett sighed.
"I only remember fragments of those mural interpretations now. Let me think…" Newt fell silent, tapping his chin in thought.
"I recall that the murals did describe the Obscurus becoming an Obscurial. But it's not a lasting state—and it requires hatred as its driving force."
"That fits perfectly!" Wyzett agreed.
He, too, was thinking: if the Isaian Society had existed for so long, perhaps they'd discovered a way to reverse the process.
He reached into his pocket, pulled out his notebook, and began jotting down everything, marking the details—these might prove invaluable later.
Newt watched him for a moment, lips pursed as if he wanted to say something, but he hesitated.
Just then, Dumbledore strolled over. Noticing Newt's awkward expression, he chuckled, "He's a Ravenclaw."
"Oh…" Newt's face lit with understanding. "That explains… a lot."
Dumbledore continued, "What are you two discussing? I thought I saw…"
"We were just talking about my time in Africa," Newt interrupted quickly.
"Africa, is it?" Dumbledore stroked his beard, his half-moon spectacles catching the light. "Uagadou is a fascinating place…"
"Africa has preserved so many ancient magical rituals. That's why they have more Animagi than anywhere else in the world."
"Animagus?" Wyzett looked up from his notes, eyes shining with curiosity.
Dumbledore gave him a knowing smile. "And I heard something about murals—I'm quite interested in those as well."
"In fact, I need to recruit another professor. Why don't we take this opportunity to visit Africa together? You could help me with the selection…"
