Chapter 2 - The Lady behind the chair

"Ah, Raphael," she said, her voice husky and confident. "Welcome to our humble abode.

Aurora's gaze lingered on Raphael, her eyes seeming to bore into his very soul. "Yes, I've heard a lot about you, Raphael. I must say, I'm intrigued."

Raphael felt a shiver run down his spine as Aurora's eyes seemed to strip him bare. He knew he had to be careful around her, for she was a woman who wouldn't hesitate to use her power to get what she wanted.

Aurora's gaze softened slightly as she leaned back in her chair, her eyes never leaving Raphael's face. "Please, Raphael, don't look so wary. I assure you, I mean no harm. You've grown into a handsome young man, just like your father." A hint of nostalgia danced in her eyes, and her voice took on a slightly wistful tone. "But I see your mother's eyes in you, too. The spark of curiosity, the determination... it's all there."

Raphael's eyes narrowed, his interest piqued. "You knew my parents?" he asked, his voice cautious but curious.

Aurora's expression turned enigmatic, and she smiled faintly. "Let's just say I knew them well enough. All will be revealed when the time is right, Raphael. For now, let's focus on your... integration into our family." She leaned forward again, her eyes glinting with a mixture of warmth and calculation. "I think you'll find that life with us can be... advantageous. But first, we need to get to know each other better."

Raphael's mind whirled with questions, but he knew better than to push Aurora for more information. Not yet, at least. He nodded slowly, his eyes locked on hers, trying to read between the lines of her words. What secrets was she hiding? And what did she mean by "advantageous"?

Raphael's nod was met with a warm smile from Aurora, and she gestured to the chair opposite her. "Please, sit down, Raphael. Let's get to know each other." Raphael took a seat, his eyes never leaving Aurora's face as he tried to gauge her intentions.

As he sat, Alessia moved to stand beside him, her hand resting on his shoulder in a gentle gesture of reassurance. Aurora's eyes flicked to her daughter, and she nodded slightly, as if approving of Alessia's actions.

"So, Raphael," Aurora began, her voice smooth as silk, "tell me about yourself. What are your interests, your passions? What drives you?"

Raphael hesitated for a moment, unsure how much to reveal. But there was something about Aurora's warm demeanor that put him at ease, and he found himself opening up to her. "I'm a bit of a history buff," he said, his voice growing more confident. "I love learning about different cultures and civilizations. And I'm also a skilled marksman."

Aurora's eyes lit up with interest, and she leaned forward, her elbows resting on the armrests of her chair. "Ah, a skilled marksman, eh? That's a valuable skillset. I think we can find a place for you in our... extracurricular activities. Alessia, tell Raphael more about our family's... hobbies."

Alessia smiled, her eyes sparkling with amusement. "We have a rather... vigorous training program, Raphael. But I think you'll find it... enlightening."

Raphael's eyes narrowed, his mind racing with the implications of Alessia's words. What kind of training program was she talking about? And what exactly did Aurora mean by "extracurricular activities"?...His curiosity finally got the better of him, and he leaned forward, his eyes locked on Aurora's. "What kind of family are the De Gouveias?" he asked, his voice laced with a mix of curiosity and caution.

Aurora's smile grew wider, and she leaned back in her chair, steepling her fingers together. "Ah, that's a question for the ages, Raphael. I think it's best if you form your own opinion, rather than taking my word for it." She paused, her eyes glinting with amusement. "When you're out on a mission in the city, ask the people what they think of the De Gouveias. I'm sure you'll get a... varied response."

Raphael's eyes narrowed, intrigued by Aurora's words. "You want me to ask the people?" he repeated, his voice skeptical.

Aurora nodded. "Yes, I do. It's very easy for myself and other family members to give praise to ourselves and ignore the... red flags, shall we say. But I think it's best if you hear it from a different source. The people of Aldovia have a... unique perspective on our family, and I think you'll find it enlightening to hear their thoughts."

Raphael's mind whirled with questions, but he knew better than to push Aurora for more information. He nodded slowly, his eyes locked on hers, trying to read between the lines of her words. What was she hiding? And what exactly did she mean by "red flags"?

As He was about to ask more questions when Aurora interrupted him, her voice smooth as honey. Her expression softened, and she leaned forward, her eyes warm with a hint of nostalgia. "Let's not get ahead of ourselves, Raphael. For now, let's just focus on getting to know each other. I think we'll have plenty of time to discuss... the details later."

She gestured to one of the staff members, who stepped forward with a nod. "We've arranged a room for you in the house, Raphael. I think you'll find it to your liking."

Raphael's eyes widened in shock as he processed the news. "A room in the house?" he repeated, his voice laced with incredulity. "Why am I sleeping in the main house with you?"

Aurora's smile grew warmer, and she leaned back in her chair. "I told you, Raphael, I knew your parents. It feels wrong to not treat their son like family. You'll be staying with us, in the main house, as one of our own."

Raphael's mind reeled with the implications of her words. Sleeping in the same house as the De Gouveia family? It felt like a level of intimacy he wasn't comfortable with. But Aurora's words struck a chord, and he remembered her mentioning his parents earlier. What exactly was the nature of her relationship with them? And why did she feel so strongly about treating him like family?

"If you're curious about the relationship I had with your parents, Raphael, you'll get the answers fully one day. But for now, let's just focus on building a connection between us. I'm sure you'll have plenty of questions, and I'll answer them all... in time."

Raphael's eyes narrowed, his mind racing with the implications of her words. One day? What did that even mean? He wanted answers now, not some vague promise of revelation in the future. But Aurora's expression was firm, and he knew better than to push her for more information.

He nodded slowly, his eyes never leaving hers. "I understand," he said, his voice neutral. "I'll wait for the answers."

Aurora's smile grew warmer, and she nodded. "Good. I'm glad we understand each other, Raphael. Now, let's get you settled into your room. I'm sure you're tired from your journey."

With a nod, Aurora gestured to the staff member, who stepped forward to escort Raphael to his room. As Raphael stood up, he couldn't help but feel a sense of unease. What secrets was Aurora hiding? And what exactly was the nature of her relationship with his parents? He would have to wait and see.

As Raphael left the room with the staff member, Aurora turned to Alessia, a curious expression on her face. "So, what's your first impression of him?" she asked, her voice low and intrigued.

Alessia raised an eyebrow, her eyes sparkling with amusement. "For their son, he sure doesn't live up to the hype," she said, her voice laced with a hint of disappointment.

Aurora laughed, a warm, throaty sound. "You still have a lot to learn, my baby," she said, her eyes glinting with amusement. "Raphael may not look like much on the surface, but trust me, he's got depths. And potential."

Alessia's expression turned thoughtful, and she nodded slowly. "I'll keep that in mind, Mother," she said, her voice neutral.

Aurora's smile grew wider, and she leaned back in her chair. "I'm sure you will, Alessia. And I'm sure you'll find Raphael... interesting, to say the least."

The two women shared a look, their eyes locked in a silent understanding. What lay unsaid between them was a web of complexities and intrigue, and Raphael was about to become entangled in it all.

As Raphael followed the staff member down the hallway, he couldn't help but feel a sense of unease. The grandeur of the mansion was overwhelming, and he couldn't shake the feeling that he was walking into a trap.

Finally, the staff member stopped in front of a large door and pushed it open, revealing a spacious room that took Raphael's breath away. The room was bigger than his whole apartment combined, with a king-sized bed, a sitting area, and a large window that let in plenty of natural light.

Raphael's eyes widened as he stepped inside, taking in the opulent decor and the luxurious furnishings. He felt like he was stepping into a different world, one that was far removed from the humble life he was used to.

The staff member smiled, noticing Raphael's reaction. "This will be your room, sir. We've taken the liberty of unpacking your belongings and arranging them in the closet."

Raphael nodded, still trying to take it all in. He walked over to the window and looked out, taking in the breathtaking view of the estate's gardens. He felt a sense of wonder and awe, but also a sense of trepidation. What was he getting himself into?
