Chapter 3 - Chapter 3 – Beginning the Change

After five days, Chulwoo thought he had missed too much school, so he returned with a renewed determination. He had spent those days training and reflecting on his actions. He knew he had to make amends for his mistakes, even if he wasn't the real Chulwoo that everyone knew.

Upon arriving at school, he went straight to Dowan's classroom. With each step he took, he felt a knot in his stomach, but also a spark of hope. When he entered, all the students looked at him with surprise and distrust. Chulwoo took a deep breath, feeling anxiety take over him, but he knew he had to keep going. He approached Dowan, who was sitting at his desk, playing on his phone.

"Dowan, I want to apologize for what I did," Chulwoo began, his voice trembling slightly. "I know there's no excuse for my behavior, but I am determined to change. I am very sorry for all the damage I caused you," he said sincerely, bowing as a sign of respect.

Dowan looked at him with surprise and some disbelief. "Are you seriously saying this, Chulwoo? I didn't expect to hear those words from you," he replied, still somewhat incredulous. "It's a start, but I'll need more than words to know if you've really changed."

Chulwoo nodded, feeling the weight of the responsibility that had been placed on him. "I understand. I will show you that I am committed to this change. I don't want you to think this is just a facade," he affirmed, feeling that each word was a promise he had to keep.

Then, with a mix of nervousness and determination, Chulwoo left the classroom and headed to the girl's classroom he almost hit, whose name is Ahrin Joo. When he reached the hallway, he found her talking with some friends, laughing carefree. Chulwoo approached her cautiously, remembering how badly he handled the situation earlier. His heart was pounding as he wondered if he could find the courage to apologize again.

"Hi," Chulwoo said, trying to sound casual, though his voice trembled slightly. "Do you have a moment to talk?" Ahrin's gaze filled with surprise, and Chulwoo noticed a mix of curiosity and distrust in her expression.

"What do you want, Chulwoo?" she asked, crossing her arms as if preparing for the worst.

"I want to apologize for what happened," he began, feeling that each word was one step further toward redemption. "I know I scared you and that my behavior was unacceptable. I have been reflecting on my actions and really want to change. I'm not asking for your immediate forgiveness, I just want you to know that I truly am sorry."

Ahrin looked at him intently, evaluating his words. "That's a good start," she finally replied, though her tone remained cautious. "But you'll have to prove that you've really changed."

Chulwoo nodded, aware that every small step counted. "I understand. I just hope to have the opportunity to do so," he responded sincerely. As she walked away, he felt that the road to redemption would be long and difficult, but that every effort would be worth it if it meant repairing the damage he had caused.

Feeling a knot in his stomach, Chulwoo decided that it was crucial to show his sincerity in the best way possible. Before Ahrin completely walked away, he took a deep breath and bowed before her.

"Please, let me show you that I am truly committed to changing," he said, with his forehead almost touching the ground. "I am willing to work hard for it."

Ahrin paused, surprised by his gesture. Her expression softened a little, but there was still a spark of distrust in her eyes. "You don't have to do that, Chulwoo," she replied, her voice a bit warmer. "But I appreciate that you're willing to try."

Chulwoo slowly straightened up, feeling that he had taken an important step. "Thank you for listening. I just want you to know that I am here to learn from my mistakes and become a better person."

Ahrin looked at him for a moment as if weighing whether she could trust him. "Alright," she finally said. "But remember that actions speak louder than words."

An wave of relief and gratitude washed over Chulwoo. "I will. Thank you for your patience," he said, feeling a new hope begin to blossom inside him.

As Ahrin walked away, Chulwoo knew that the path would not be easy. He would have to prove his change not only with words but with consistent actions. However, at that moment, he felt he had taken a brave first step toward redemption, and that gave him the strength to continue. Days went by, training and attending school, where he practically only studied. But there was an event that made me realize the true kind of life Chulwoo had led.

...

It all started when I was returning home after training at the gym. When I arrived, I was surprised to find someone inside. The house was a mess. When the person noticed my presence, he approached shouting, and that's when I saw his appearance. He had long gray hair, eyes of the same color, and a scruffy beard; he looked like a vagabond.

Just as my thoughts began to drift, the man lunged at me, knocking me to the ground while shouting: "Where do you hide the money, damn useless?" He hit me mercilessly. I wanted to defend myself, but my body didn't respond, as if the true owner of this body was paralyzed by fear. The man's words were cruel: "You are useless, you're good for nothing. Where is the money you keep?"

"I don't have any money right now!" I responded, and it was true. I had spent most of it at the gym. His reaction was even more violent. Beatings and kicks rained down on me as he continued shouting: "Gather money, I'll come back. And remember, this is your fault. Because of your existence, your mother isn't with us. It would have been better if you hadn't been born."

When he finally left, I couldn't help but cry. At that moment, my body showed me memories that belonged to the old Chulwoo. At first, this family was united, but everything changed when they fired his father from his job. That's when the decline began. His father, increasingly immersed in alcohol, became violent. At first, he only asked his mother for money to buy drinks, but then he started hitting her when she refused.

Days went by filled with shouts and blows. One night, while Chulwoo and his mother were home, everything seemed calm. She said everything would be fine, and the naive Chulwoo believed her. But that illusion shattered one night when he saw her with a large bag beside her. "Hijo? Are you going somewhere?" he asked, and his face went from surprise to fear.

"Mother, you're leaving? Are you going somewhere?" he asked, and his face went from surprise to fear.

"Son, you don't have to worry about your father anymore. I'm going to look for help," she said, trying to sound convincing. "Can I come with you?" he begged, but she replied: "No, Chulwoo. Your father mustn't suspect. Stay here and wait for help."

"Take care, mother. Come back soon," he told her, but she only nodded, promising to return.

From then on, each day became more brutal. His father, in his rage, blamed him for everything bad in his life. He spent whole nights on the street trying to find food and a place to sleep, while he took women home and told him to come back when no one was around. It was during one of those moments that he reconnected with his mother. When he saw her, he ran excitedly, but I stopped abruptly when I noticed she wasn't alone. She had a baby in her arms and a man beside her. That moment everything became clear; he had no one left.

From then on, I started spending more time on the streets to avoid his father. It was in that environment that he got involved with thugs. We robbed people, and thus, Chulwoo became a bully. The happiness he felt when hitting and humiliating others became a refuge, a way to elevate his status in society and avoid being trampled upon.

Now, lying on the ground surrounded by those heartbreaking memories, I thought: "This has to stop." As tears fell down my cheeks, a new resolve began to form inside me.

....

The next day at the gym.

"Today I want us to take my training to the next level!" said Chulwoo, with a spark of determination in his eyes.

The trainer looked at him, surprised, but nodded with a smile.

"If that's what you want, I'm glad to hear it. Get ready, because today there will be no mercy. We're going to do a routine that will test all your limits."

"I'm ready!" responded Chulwoo, feeling adrenaline course through his body.

Days passed, and each session became more intense. Between lifting weights and resistance exercises, the trainer added a new dimension to his training.

"Today we're going to incorporate boxing," announced the trainer as he put on the gloves. "I want you to face the bag and then have a little fight. Because this isn't just physical, it's also technical."

Chulwoo adjusted his gloves, excitement bubbling inside him.

"Perfect! I need to work on my agility and accuracy."

While throwing punches at the bag, his concentration and effort were evident. Each hit resonated in the gym, and sweat soaked his shirt.

"That's it, Chulwoo!" shouted the trainer, encouraging him. "Keep your guard up and move. Remember, every punch counts."

"Yes! I can do more!" responded Chulwoo, feeling the fire of motivation burn brighter.

As they progressed through the sessions, the combination of strength and technique pushed him to the limit, but instead of giving up, each challenge only fueled his desire to improve.

"Are you ready for the next round?" asked the trainer with a challenging smile.

"Always!" replied Chulwoo, determined not to let anything stop him.

So, amidst sweat and effort, Chulwoo discovered his true potential, pushing himself beyond what he had ever imagined.

Time flew by quickly, and Chulwoo found himself more immersed in his training. As weeks went on, the gym became his second home. Every punch, every lift, every drop of sweat brought him closer to his goal.

One day, while resting between sets, the trainer approached him with a proposal.

"Chulwoo, I'm thinking of entering you into a local boxing competition. I believe you're ready to put everything you've learned to the test."

Chulwoo paused for a moment, weighing the idea. The competition was an incredible opportunity, but it also brought a pressure that made him nervous.

"Do you really think I'm ready?" he asked, doubt showing in his voice.

"You are. I've seen how much you've grown, both in strength and technique. You have what it takes. You just need to believe in yourself," replied the trainer confidently.

The spark of determination reignited in Chulwoo's eyes. After a few seconds of reflection, he nodded.

"I'll do it!" he exclaimed, excitement and nervousness mixing inside.

The following weeks became a mix of physical and mental preparation. Chulwoo focused not only on perfecting his technique but also on visualizing his success in the ring. Every punch he threw at the bag and every sparring session felt like one more step toward the competition.

Finally, the day of the event arrived. The local gym was packed with spectators and competitors. Chulwoo felt a whirlwind of emotions as he watched other boxers warm up and prepare.

"Remember, the key is to stay calm and focus on your training," his trainer told him, giving him a pat on the back. "You've worked hard to get here."

First match:

Chulwoo entered the ring with determination engraved in every muscle of his body. Despite the nerves, he took a deep breath and remembered the trainer's words: "Stay calm and trust your training."

The first round began. Chulwoo moved with agility, maintaining a defensive stance while studying his opponent's movements. The first punch from his opponent was quick and powerful, forcing Chulwoo to retreat. Despite the impact, Chulwoo kept his guard and prepared to counterattack.

His opponent, an experienced boxer, didn't leave any space for doubt and launched a barrage of quick punches. Chulwoo, though blocking most, received some in the torso that made him stagger. The difficulty increased every second, but Chulwoo remained firm, remembering that each blow received was an opportunity to learn and adjust his strategy.

In the second round, Chulwoo decided to take the initiative. He threw a quick jab with his lead hand, followed by a powerful cross with his rear hand, turning his body to give more force to the punch. His opponent dodged the jab, but the cross hit, making him step back slightly. Chulwoo didn't stop. He kept throwing combinations, including hooks with both hands and uppercuts aimed at breaking through his opponent's defense. Although some punches connected, his opponent countered with body hooks and uppercuts to the jaw that made Chulwoo step back again.

The third round was a battle of endurance. Both boxers were exhausted, but Chulwoo's determination was unbreakable. Deciding not to give up, he launched a quick combination of jab-cross-hook, using a moment of distraction from his opponent. Chulwoo threw a quick jab, followed by a powerful cross that connected with his opponent's jaw. Then, he spun his body and threw a left hook that impacted his opponent's jaw, making him step back.

Finally, a powerful uppercut with his right hand connected with his opponent's jaw, making him step back. With the temporary advantage, Chulwoo continued attacking, maintaining pressure until the referee intervened. The fight was tough and full of difficulties, but Chulwoo came out victorious, knowing he had won not only with strength but also with strategy and perseverance.

The trainer, proud, patted him on the shoulder. "Good job, Chulwoo. You've shown your ability to face challenges. Keep it up, and success will be yours."

Chulwoo, exhausted but relieved and grateful, smiled. The first fight had been a real challenge, but he was ready to face the next ones with the same determination.

...…

Second fight:

The second fight promised to be even more challenging than the first. Chulwoo's opponent was stronger and more agile, which became evident from the first bell. Chulwoo took a deep breath, maintaining calm and focusing on the strategy he had planned with his trainer: defense and counterattack.

The first round began with his opponent throwing quick jabs and hooks, moving with impressive agility. Chulwoo kept his guard high, blocking and dodging most of the punches. Every time his opponent approached, Chulwoo retreated and looked to create openings to counterattack.

In the second round, Chulwoo's opponent increased the intensity, launching quick combinations of jabs, crosses, and hooks. Chulwoo, attentive and focused, used his defensive skills to block and dodge the punches. He patiently waited for the right moment to launch his counterattack.

Finally, the moment arrived. While his opponent threw a right hook, Chulwoo dodged the punch, leaned slightly to the left, and responded with a quick and powerful cross that hit his opponent's jaw. The opponent staggered, surprised by the speed and accuracy of the punch.

Seizing the opportunity, Chulwoo launched a combination of jab and left hook, connecting with his opponent's face. The fight turned into a constant exchange of attacks and defenses, with both boxers demonstrating their stamina and skills.

In the third round, Chulwoo decided to take more risks. He threw a quick jab to keep his opponent at bay and then followed with a right uppercut that impacted the opponent's torso, making him step back. Chulwoo maintained the pressure, throwing combinations of jab-cross-hook and moving with agility to avoid counterattacks.

The opponent, though visibly exhausted, did not give up. He launched a series of quick punches, forcing Chulwoo to retreat and keep his guard high. However, Chulwoo exploited an opening and threw a left hook that cleanly connected to his opponent's jaw, knocking him down.

The referee started the count, and although the opponent tried to get up, he couldn't recover in time. Chulwoo was declared the winner by technical knockout. Despite the difficulty, he had managed to defeat a stronger and more agile opponent with effective strategy and determination.

The trainer, proud, gave him a pat on the shoulder. "Good job. but remember to save your energy."

Chulwoo, exhausted but nodded.

...…..

Third fight:

The third fight was shaping up to be one of the most challenging for Chulwoo. His opponent was known for his speed and agility in the ring. Chulwoo knew he would have to use his unique endurance to overcome his adversary. He took a deep breath and remembered the strategy he had prepared with his trainer.

The first round started, and his opponent moved like lightning, throwing quick jabs and hooks with impressive precision. Chulwoo, maintaining calm, focused on dodging and blocking the punches, waiting for the right moment to counterattack. Despite his efforts, some punches connected, making Chulwoo feel the speed and strength of his opponent.

In the second round, Chulwoo decided to change tactics. Instead of just defending himself, he started throwing quick jabs to keep his opponent at a distance. Although the adversary continued to dodge skillfully, Chulwoo managed to land some punches, gaining confidence. The fight became a strategic game, with both boxers measuring their movements and seeking opportunities to attack.

The third round was a real test of endurance. Chulwoo, feeling tired in his muscles, refused to let fatigue defeat him. His opponent kept launching quick combinations, but Chulwoo was determined not to give up. He found an opening in his opponent's defense and threw a quick jab, followed by a powerful cross that connected with the opponent's jaw. The punch made his opponent stagger, but he didn't fall.

Seizing the moment, Chulwoo continued attacking with a combination of left hook and right uppercut, hitting the torso and jaw of the opponent. However, his opponent quickly recovered his balance and counterattacked with a series of rapid punches that made Chulwoo step back.

In the fourth round, both fighters were visibly exhausted. Chulwoo knew he needed to use his last strength to secure victory. He launched a left hook, followed by a right uppercut that cleanly connected with his opponent's jaw. The punch was strong enough to leave his opponent stunned.

With his last burst of energy, Chulwoo launched a quick combination of jab-cross-hook, finally knocking his opponent to the ground. The referee started the count, and although the opponent tried to get up, he couldn't in time.

Chulwoo was declared the winner by unanimous decision. Despite the difficulty and the speed of his opponent, he had managed to win through endurance and determination. The trainer, proud, gave him a pat on the shoulder.

"You've shown great ability to adapt and overcome challenges. Keep it up," said the trainer with a satisfied smile.

The final was scheduled for the next day, and Chulwoo knew this would be the hardest test of all. His opponent was known as a local champion, renowned for his relentless strength and impeccable technique. After the tournament, Chulwoo went to the gym to meet with his trainer and discuss the strategy for the big final.

The trainer was waiting, with a serious but confident look.

"Chulwoo, you've come this far because you've shown great determination and skill. But tomorrow you will face a formidable opponent. We need a solid plan," he said, pointing to a board with some notes.

The trainer looked at Chulwoo, making sure he understood the importance of each point.

"Listen, Chulwoo," the trainer said, with a stern look. "Your opponent is strong, and you can't afford to underestimate the challenge ahead. I don't want you to fool yourself into thinking you're a genius. The reality is that you might lose, and that's something you have to accept."

Chulwoo tensed up, feeling the harsh truth of his trainer's words.

"But I've worked hard," he responded, trying to hold onto his determination.

"Yes, I know, but effort isn't always enough. Talent counts, and you're not the most talented in the ring. You have to give it your all, every second, every punch, if you really want a chance. You can't afford a single mistake. Tomorrow, when you step into the ring, remember that you're not just facing an opponent. You're facing your own limitations."

Chulwoo nodded, feeling the pressure grow, but also a spark of challenge.

"I understand, trainer. I will give my best. I won't give up without a fight," he replied, with a mix of fear and resolve.

That night, Chulwoo went home and reviewed the plan over and over in his mind, visualizing every move, every punch, and every strategy. He knew the final would be a tough battle, but he was determined to give his all and fight with all his strength.

...…

The final:

The day of the final had arrived, and Chulwoo was ready to face his greatest challenge yet. With the plan etched deeply in his mind and determination burning in his heart, he stepped into the ring, prepared to give the fight of his life.

Finally, the final battle began. Chulwoo faced a formidable opponent, known for his strength and impeccable technique. From the very first round, Chulwoo realized this fight would be different from all previous ones.

His opponent dominated the ring, throwing precise and powerful punches. Every blow he threw seemed to have the force of a hammer, and Chulwoo did everything he could to dodge and counter. However, his opponent's skill was obvious. Chulwoo received several hits to the torso and jaw, feeling pain and fatigue accumulating in his body.

As the rounds progressed, the situation grew more desperate for Chulwoo. His opponent showed no signs of weakness and continued attacking with relentless ferocity. Chulwoo tried to follow the plan, keeping his guard high and seeking opportunities to counterattack, but every attempt was quickly neutralized by the speed and precision of his opponent. The hits kept coming, and Chulwoo felt his endurance fading.

Although exhausted and battered, Chulwoo did not stop fighting. His opponent, seeing an opportunity to end the fight, launched a flurry of quick and powerful punches. Chulwoo tried to block and dodge, but the force of the blows overwhelmed him. Each impact resonated through his body, and finally, a right hook hit him in the jaw, making him stagger.

Chulwoo fell to the ground, dazed and unable to get up. The referee started the count, and although Chulwoo tried to get up, his legs wouldn't respond. The referee declared the opponent the winner, and Chulwoo, though defeated, got up with difficulty. The trainer approached him and helped him to stand.

"You did well, Chulwoo. You've shown great courage and dedication. This is just one more step in your journey," he said with a look of approval.

Chulwoo, physically shattered, felt an even deeper loss in his pride, or what was left of it. He knew he had given his best, but the defeat was bitter. As he reflected, he told himself:

"This path I chose is not easy."

With a deep sigh, he gathered himself and continued to think:

"Every defeat is an opportunity to learn and grow."

Determined not to let negative feelings consume him, Chulwoo clung to this belief strongly. He knew that, although the road was difficult, each step brought him closer to becoming the best version of himself.
