Chapter 8 - 8. Memory

Brodwin City, 23rd March, 501

While having breakfast, Alan thinks how his experiment results from the past three days. He had already killed ten more people over the past three days. But still, he cannot enter someone's mind to browse their memory. The barrier protecting the mind is difficult to sneak inside, and if he uses force, the mind shatters and the experimental subject dies.

If he has time to observe someone's mind for a prolonged period, then maybe he can find a way to pass the mind barrier. What stops him is his pitiful amount of cellular energy; directly viewing someone's mind consumes his cellular energy rapidly, and he has only a few minutes to view that person's mind.

If he can find a place to hold someone captive, then he would be able to experiment on them for a longer period. For that, he needs to find a place to hold them. He could rent the empty warehouses in the city's outskirts. And renovate them for holding people.

He would do this, and in the meantime, he would continue his experiments on the gang members. Today, he would also visit Marcus in jail. For the past few days, he communicated with Marcus by phone. But visiting would assure Marcus that he wouldn't give up on him.

On the way, he could visit a realtor to inquire about the warehouse. Alan nods with today's plan in his mind, and he gets up and starts getting ready to leave. The experiments were not completely useless; he understood the limit of his hypnotism ability. He can only hypnotise a person to do a simple task; complex task requires more cellular energy, and if he orders them to do something detrimental to them, they wake or fight against his control over them.

But all the limitations are because of his cellular energy and the power of his mind. If they are stronger, then all these limitations would disappear, and he could hypnotise a weak-willed person to kill themselves. The power of the mind is not gorgeous like elemental magic, but it has the same devastating effect or is even more sinister.

He now possesses the power to turn friends into enemies, to make lovers kill each other, or to engage in even more sinister acts. But he shouldn't do these, as it would mean crossing a line. That after crossing, he would never be the same. He'd already gone too far by killing individuals who, in truth, had done him no direct harm.

His twisted justification: they were criminals, and they would harm him if he didn't do something to them. But their actions against him were provoked by his own presence; he had actively sought their trouble. This gave him the perverse peace of mind to eliminate them later.

He was acutely aware of the dark path he was treading. Still, he feels compelled to continue, driven by a morbid desire to understand the human mind. Why was he not like this in his past life? It was all because the power he controlled in his hand before on earth, he didn't act like this. It was because he had little power, and he would think about the consequences of his actions.

But now the consequence doesn't matter as he thinks that if he doesn't get caught, he won't suffer any consequence. And as he continues getting stronger, then it wouldn't matter if he gets caught at that time, no one could do anything to him. He can act as he pleases. So, he will not stop.

But he needs something to hold him back from crossing the line. Now, their criminal status provided a convenient rationale, making them "not innocent people." But to take action against the truly innocent? That was a boundary he could never rationalise, a line he feared crossing, knowing it might lead him to a point of no return.

At the front of his door, that from now he would never even hypnotise innocent and ordinary people. He would do it if it is absolutely necessary, otherwise never and even if he does it, he won't harm them anyway. Otherwise, he would be no different from those criminals. No, according to the law of this world or earth, he is already a criminal, but he doesn't want to become something worse than them.

With that determination, he steps out of his apartment. He gets in his car and drives to a realtor first. And after telling his requirements for the warehouse. He leaves, and a few minutes later, he stops his car outside the city jail. He outside surprised to meet Kristy and learned from Kristy that she had new information that could help Marcus's case.

He asks about the information, but he gets that she will share it with him and Marcus together. And inside the jail in the visiting room, he learns that all the body parts of Sofia were found. There was a blow to Sofia's head. But that injury didn't kill Sofia; she was already dead. Sofia died because of suffocation two hours before someone hit her head.

This means Sofia was killed by one person, and the other cut her body and dumped it in different places. So, according to Kristy, Marcus cannot be proven guilty before the second person is found. Because Marcus could be the one who disposed of the body, the proof against Marcus is that Sofia's blood is in his bathroom. Which means Marcus cut Sofia's body, but it doesn't mean he was the one who killed her. So, now the police have only a suspicion that Marcus is the killer, but no concrete proof. And in the next hearing, Marcus could get out of jail on bail.

Alan, happy with the news, thanked Kristy. After a short conversation with Marcus, he also leaves after Kristy. In the car's radio, he heard news that made him frown. If the news is true, then from today and for the next few days, he cannot use the gang members as his experimental subjects.

Because gang violence in the Western part has increased dramatically. The host explained that all of that started with two members of the Cat gang were killed with their necks sliced. Killing people like this is the handiwork of the Dark Scorpion gang. So, the next Cat gang accused the dark scorpion gang of killing their members. The two sides started fighting, and the next night, three more gang members died in the same way, but this time from the Moran gang.

Then, four more gang members died on the next night from the two gangs, Black Dog and Bone gang, and today three more gang members died in the same method was found. Because of the manner they died, the gangs became agitated, blaming each other. So, the police department decides to increase the patrols on the western part of the city.

Alan sighs as the last patient of the day leaves. He starts wondering what he will do next for a few days. Very likely, he cannot experiment on the gang members for a few days. But he cannot remain doing nothing.

Alan, tapping his finger on the table, wonders what he can do to understand the human mind. "I am always trying to look at other memories." His eyes brighten, and he murmurs," Why don't I look at my memories?"

He says," Yes, I should see if I can remember all the memories of my life." He relaxed back on the chair and closed his eyes. Everything turned black, then he recalled his memory of today completely, not missing a single second.

When all the memories of the day gather in his mind. He wonders what to do with it. Let it disperse and return to its original form. He wonders why he didn't build a place for his memory like a library. The shelves will be years and a day's memory, a book,

The memory floating in the black space turns into a book. Every page with a moving picture, containing his memory for an hour. After, he turns yesterday's memory into a book and continues. The more he moves past, the more difficult and time-consuming it becomes. Only the memorable points of that day come forefront of his mind.

And he has to slowly recall the rest and construct the complete memory of the day, and it consumes his mental strength. And also, his cellular energy is depleted as he feels hungry. He stops for the time, as of now, he is aware that the construction of the library couldn't be done in one day. He stands up from his chair and starts walking toward his office door.

When he hears the front door of his clinic push open. A male voice," Anybody hear?" He asks this question a few times. Alan doesn't answer as he is not in the mood to check any more patients. Now he wants to quickly find a place to eat.

The male voice:" Miss, looks like no one is here. Let's come tomorrow."

A female voice:" The front door is open. Maybe they are in the back and didn't hear you." Alan quickly pulled his office door open, hearing the voice. The start of construction of the library strengthened his memory for a few months and even if he didn't do it. He would be very unlikely to forget this voice.

The male voice:" Oh! This is your clinic, Alan."

By the door inside his office stands Detective Throne and Anastasia.
