Chapter 2 - Chapter 2 System Awakened

...

Laurel sat motionless, with tears streaming down her face. She did not believe her own sister would do that to her… all because she wanted the man she was married to. But how did she not see Camile's true colours all this while?

Her sister was right about one thing, she was too naive and soft-hearted. But that was about to change now. She wiped her tears away with a bitter chuckle. "At least I got a second chance…" her tone turned melancholic. "Too bad I was reborn in a time where I married Alexander Wayne… my heartless husband. But a divorce can easily resolve it."

"At least I know that the apocalypse is coming, and I have time to make arrangements." She dusted her dress, rising to her feet.

"I need to warn my loved ones about the incoming danger." Her brows knitted together in worry.

"That is not an option. We won't tell anyone about it. We only need to stockpile enough for us to rise in the apocalypse. We need power… not kindness."

A voice echoed in her head. Laurel's eyes darted around the room, unable to find where the voice was coming from.

"Show yourself… who are you?" Her voice cracked.

"Well, why don't you take a look in the mirror?"

"Mirror?" Laurel muttered under her breath as she walked towards the mirror hanging on the wall.

Her steps were slow and hesitant. Her fingers twitched by her sides. Mustering all of her courage, she stood in front of the mirror. A girl around the age of 22 stared back at her. Her long silky black hair cascaded down her back, with some falling over the side of her face. Her innocent hazel eyes stared back at her.

She exhaled, she didn't even know she had been holding her breath all this while.

Her expression began to change. She tried to control it but she couldn't. A devilish smirk formed on her lips and her once innocent eyes turned cold and cunning.

"Pleasure meeting you..."

Laurel staggered away from the mirror in shock, her hands touching her face. 'Who was that? That was not me.'

"Who are you? And what have you done to me?" came her shaky voice.

The voice sighed dramatically. "We need to set up some rules here. What you can say to me and what you can't. And I hate repeating myself. But for the introduction… we are sharing this body together… In other words one of us has to be dominant… and I know that is me."

Laurel covered her ears with her hand. She did not know what was going on and neither did she understand what the voice was talking about… all she wanted was for it to be gone.

"Could it be that I have gone crazy?" she muttered to herself, her breath coming out in rasps.

"You will get to know me… very soon."

Her voice was like a whisper to Laurel's ears.

In Laurel's panic, her fingers brushed against the chain around her neck, and her brows furrowed. It was the pendant gifted to her by her late grandfather, she had lost it during the apocalypse. A tear of relief trickled down her cheeks.

The necklace was small and metallic, the center was shaped like a perfect circle split into two swirling halves, one half was white, the other black. A yin-yang necklace.

Her grandfather used to call it a symbol of balance and destiny, and he claimed that the necklace would be of help to her when the time comes, but as a child, she never understood what he meant.

"You're part of something much older, Laurel," he had once whispered, his accent soft, and his gaze distant.

Now, with the voice echoing in her head and her reflection no longer her own, those words made a terrifying kind of sense.

A faint glow pulsed from the necklace the moment she touched it. She quickly retracted her hand. Why was everything weird? She had touched this necklace numerous times in her past life but it had never reacted like this.

"What is this…?" she whispered, her voice almost lost in her breath.

The voice in her head chuckled.

"So… that's how it is. Your necklace is exactly like mine…"

"Soul Sync Farming Space System initializing…."

Laurel groaned, falling to her knees as she felt pain shoot through her. It was like someone was stitching her soul to another, binding them into one. Her body trembled like a leaf before a storm.

"Two souls detected… Compatibility:87%."

Laurel bit down on the scream that almost tore from her throat.

"Sync permission… granted."

"Pairing completed. Welcome, Hosts. I am a Soul Sync Farming Space System SSFSS10."

Laurel found herself in another world. But this world had no trees or any form of life. It was nothing but an empty land and a blue sky.

She looked around her, unsure of where she was.

From afar she saw a figure standing with her back to her. The figure had her hair tied up in a ponytail, dressed in Chinese warrior clothes. A long sword extended from her hand.

Laurel's breath caught in her throat, she could feel the deadly aura that was coming from her, it was overbearing and making her skin crawl in fear.

The warrior glanced over her shoulders, and her cold brown eyes met those of Laurel. A smirk formed on her lips as she walked towards her.

Every step she took screamed power and authority.

Laurel stood unmoving like a statue. Her mouth opened in awe.

The warrior stood face to face with her. Her brown eyes stared at her with curiosity, and she tilted her head. "So you are the one I'll be sharing the body with?" Her cold voice dripped with malicious intent.

Laurel nodded her head in fear… something told her she could not afford to annoy her.

"I am Laurel Wayne." She shakily extended her hand.

Laurel's pulse quickened. Who was this woman… and how long had she been inside her?

The warrior stared at her hand with disdain. She pushed Laurel's hand away with the side of her sword. "Ling Xuan."

Laurel shakily brought her hand to her side. Being watched like prey made it more difficult to relax. "Nice to meet you."

"Are you sure about that?" Ling Xuan stared blankly at her.

"Hosts have completely synced." The robotic voice of the system broke the awkward situation.
