The office felt colder since the incident.
No one said anything out loud, but she could feel it; the stares, the fake smiles, the sudden silence when she passed.
Still, Mara held her head high.
She talked into Malik's office when summoned, expecting anything; termination, another accusation, maybe even more silence.
What she didn't expect... was concern.
"I had your access logs pulled," Malik said, eyes locked on her. "There's something off."
She blinked. "Off… how?"
"You didn't open the Kargan file. Not once. Not even close to it."
A flicker of relief danced across her face, but she swallowed it down. "So why am I still being watched like a thief?"
"Because someone wants you gone," he said simply. "And they're getting bold."
His fingers tapped the desk. "Have you crossed anyone lately?"
Mara hesitated.
Layla's face immediately came to mind; but accusing Malik's ex without proof? Dangerous territory.
"Maybe," she said. "But nothing serious. Just... office politics."
He nodded. "Then play the game wisely, Mara."
She stood, lips tight, heartbeat racing. "I'm not afraid of games. I just don't like losing."
As she turned to leave, Malik's voice stopped her.
"I don't think you did this. But if I'm right…"
He paused.
"They're not just coming for your job. They're coming for me, too."
And for the first time, Mara realized; this wasn't just her battle anymore.
They were both in it now.
