Chapter 2 - The Last Call

Jeet: Don't you understand or you pretending not to? I cannot stay with you a second longer, this is not working anymore.

Shubhangi: But why? I had done everything you said and everything you liked, I have transformed to someone you will make your wife. Then why it have to be me.

Jeet: (Listening- but no response)

Shubhangi: Did you ever thought what would I go through? Is this a joke to you?

Jeet: No, I really don't feel it's gonna work ever!

Shubhangi: And you thought after three years of our relationship. Are all the effort made by me gone unnoticed. Didn't you thought what would I have to go through?

Jeet: Its never late to realise right? And I know you will be fine in a day or two.

Shubhangi: Just because I will survive that doesn't mean you have every right to wreck my life. Have you ever thought what our parents will have to go through because of this. They can't face the society. I don't know about yours but mine will shatter down. I have made so much effort to make them accept our love. And this is how you repay me and expect me to accept your breakup?

Jeet: Society will forget everything one day. Lets end this.. Stop crying. Shubhangi grow higher. Bye!

Shubhangi: A... (Call dropped from the other side)

Shubhangi looked at the phone knowing the call was over, but still don't want to believe.

Shubhangi: So it is finally over. Huh...

(Shubhangi — a warm-hearted Bengali girl with a smile that could light up a room, the kind who would go to any length just to see someone else happy. And Jeet? Her boyfriend — or rather, her ex. A man who struggled with her strength, who mistook love for control. Even after she bent herself into shapes he approved of, in the end, he still chose himself over her.)

She placed the phone beside her and stared up, not at the ceiling — but through it, as if searching for answers in the cracks.

She felt like crying out loud but not a single tear would fall.

Constantly, overthinking and scrolling all the chats in her mind searching for her one mistakes that made him end this relationship.

Where did she go wrong?

Was she not changed enough for him?

Is she really that boring?

Is she not lovable enough?

With all those thoughts inside her, she didn't realise when curled up her knees to her chest.

Luckily she was in her hostel, so her parents don't have to see her like this. They would still think their child is happy. But not long enough she was thinking this, her phone rang again-

With a ray of hope —may be he called to apologise and sort everything— she went to pick the call. But as expected its not him, rather it's written mumma.

She picked the call casually only to realise– her mom already heard the news. And as again expected she was shattered. Shubhangi didn't knew how and what to answer except to pretend fine and not heart broken.

With time, her parents and siblings came to accept the fact that it's already over. Though they initially urged her to try once more — to reach out, to fix things – but Shubhangi stood her ground. This time, she chose her esteem rather than begging for love.

She knew it couldn't go on like this. It was time to refocus — on her studies, on herself. She quietly distanced herself from every conversation that circled back to him. And surprisingly, everyone supported her decision. They thought she was healing. Moving on.

But may be the truth was different–

Every night, long after the lights were out and the world was asleep, she cried herself to sleep. Silently. Consistently.

Only her pillow truly knew the weight of the pain she carried.

And in those sleepless night she didn't decide but rather started to believe— love doesn't meant for her, may be she would be happy alone.
