Chapter 1 - Level 1, really?

Kenji was confused, he had been for the last few days, awakening in a body that wasn't his, in a time he didn't belong in. A week ago, he had been a regular programmer in the year 2025. His biggest worry was the grind, working by day and watching anime or playing dnd by evening and night. Things had been simple but now he was in the year 2133, with memories not his own. He had thought that his modern world had been polluted, yet now he could barely see the stars in the night sky at night even though he lived on the country side. At least he wasn't worrying financially. His family had had a hand in creating dive technology, so he was somewhat rich after his parents died. Dive tech, that was something which any anime watcher had at least heard of, the kind of thing found in sword art online and- more pressingly, overlord. Yes, Yggdrasil was indeed real and he did have an account but he had been too scared to look at it. It took all his willpower to link into the machine using the port at the base of his neck. But when he finally did, he was ready to see what he was working with.

It had been seven years since Yggdrasil launched, so according to cannon, he had five years to reach level one hundred and prepare to enter the new world. He wondered in which era he would be reborn in, the time of the six gods? The eight freed kings? The rise of the sorcerer kingdom? Or even later?

But that was still five years away, first he had to see what to work with.

He only had one character to choose from. Yggdrasil allowed three characters per account though really, most only grinder up one, with how tedious leveling was. Reaching level 100 could take a year or two of intense grinding, way more if you had a life. Kenji's previous owner had only reached level 70. the character was a human, looking much like Kenji did in real life, short, blonde hair and vivid blue eyes, most uncommon for Japan but his parents had come over from Europe and he grew up speaking not only Japanese but also German and English. In the character preview, it showed him wearing medium armor. A warrior build then? He had always preferred magicians but he could work with a sword and sorcery type character too.

The preview didn't show any job levels, so he couldn't gaze upon the build just yet. With a push of a button, he loaded into the world. In a flash, he was gone from the select menu and into the game world. He stood in some sort of wooden room, an inn perhaps?

He was more than curious now, so he opened the status menu and his jaw hit the floor. This- this was- , "awful! Over a dozen classes, all basic ones with none over level seven! Warrior level 6, alchemist level 3, ranger level 7… the list goes on… what was this guy thinking? This character isn't good at anything, just terrible at a dozen different things… the inventory is impressive, this guy spent way too much money on this game… and most of these items can't even be used by this character! A staff of arcane power? He has no arcane caster class!"

Kenji shook his head. He couldn't work with this. He would have to start over… but it was kind of a waste of good items and gold. Maybe the shop held an answer? He scrolled through the shop, finding many interesting things (race swap artifacts, limit removers and super tier magic quickeners for example) until he found what he was looking for. For 1500 yen(a little over ten dollars) an inventory transfer ticket. It could be redeemed when making a new character to siphon off the inventory of an already great character on the same account. He didn't mind the price, this would greatly accelerate his progress. He would spend the next five years grinding the hell out of Yggdrasil in order to become a powerhouse in the new world once the game servers shut down.

He logged off of that character and immediately began creating a new once, using that ticket first thing before customising the character. He chose human as the race, it would make his time easier, both in Yggdrasil and in the new world. Heteromorphic players were often hunted for sport, especially at lower levels.

The name? Bjorg Dawn. Bjorg meant salvation and dawn? That was Kenji's last name back in 2025.

Next his appearance… he tweaked and nudged the sliders around for a good hour or so before he was satisfied. His character was pale, with blue hair and eyes, sporting a goatee, looking relatively frail but tall, 185cm to be exact. He hadn't been blessed with height in either of his life's, so he indulged there.

Finally, he had to choose a class, there were dozens on options, all basic classes of course. Alchemist, warrior, archer, Druid, ranger, Blacksmith, priest, cleric, elementalist and so many more but there really was only one option for him, the wizard. Once he had chosen his class, his character was dressed in dark blue robes and holding a gnarled, old wooden staff, nothing fancy.

He chose his first three spells among the dozens available and looked everything over again.

Once he was satisfied, he hit create character and in a flash, he was somewhere else. He was confused. Normally, upon creating a character, a cutscene would play but he was just here, in an open field of long grass, with a forest to his right. The wind blew past him and rustled the grass. He could smell the earthy scent wafting through the wind.

This was his second red flag. You weren't supposed to be able to smell in Yggdrasil, it was prohibited by law, so as to not let people confuse game and reality.

Had he crossed over already? This could be bad, he was level 1! Even that horrible build would be preferred to starting the reincarnation at level 1! How did Ainz tell he was no longer in the game? He did something which went against the age rating. Kenji had no lustful women to grope but he had his other assets, so, he pulled out his junk. He waited and waited, his penis in broad daylight but when no one kicked him out of the game for inappropriate behaviour, he sighed, "this is real, isn't it? Fuck me… at least tell me I can still access the game system, status?"

Great, at least that still worked… Kenji- no, Bjorg opened his inventory and was even more happy, the transfer had taken place, he had several magic items to equip himself with, "let's see, can't wear armor, so these are immediately out… weapons? That staff of arcane power comes in handy right about now, it reduces the cooldown of every spell cast and doubles the power of any spells of third tier or lower, can only be equipped by an arcane caster", he pulled out the staff, it was wooden with a blue crystal imbedded within its tip, almost as big as his hand, "and this robe of the apprentice, it boosts the physical Defense and the resistance stat of the wearer by 10 points" the robe of the apprentice looked almost the same as the standard wizard robes but it had magic subtly woven into the threads and was also of better quality.

Before he could further search through the inventory, Bjorg heard a chattering cry, "skeee! Skeee!" From within the forest came rushing out three goblins. The green skinned creatures were chasing someone, a young girl in a tattered dress, her features fair and her eyes puffy from crying too much. She stumbled and fell to her knees. The woman and Bjorg locked eyes for but a moment and he knew he had to act.

"Let's see if this works… [magic arrow]!" An arrow made of pure, blue light materialised and shot straight at the closest goblin's head. It exploded in a shower of blood and gore. Quickly, he cast the spell two more times and the monsters were torn apart. He held it in just long enough to kill them but then he doubled over and vomited. He had just killed. Sure it was monsters he killed, sure, they were after that poor girl but it was simply too much.

He wanted nothing more than to run and not look back but he had to get used to killing if he wanted to survive. By the time he had calmed down, he walked over to the girl, swiping away a bit of vomit from the corner of his mouth, "are you good, young lady?"

The girl sobbed, clinging to his robe, burrowing her face into it. He quietly comforted her as he looked at his status. Xp was at 30%, so the goblins were worth 10% each. He was glad that it wouldn't be too hard to climb levels early on but the thought of killing again terrified him.

When the girl got her act together, she whispered in a raspy voice, like she had screamed for a long time, "thank you… thank you so much sir Wizard"

"Everything will be fine…" he lightly stroked her hair as she gathered herself.
