Chapter 6 - Silent Battles

Kurt's POV :

Our 21st Century Literature teacher, Ms. Carmela Villanueva, entered the class.

We were all already settled in our seats after returning to the class from the cafeteria.

After the introduction, she turned her back to us to show us our syllabus on the smart board.

When that moment came, Cassie and her group, and some other students, began to make paper balls. I saw Axel and Lukie doing that too. What the hell—?

"What are you both doing...?" I whispered to Axel and Lukie.

"What?" Lukie smirked. "Just planning to show that nerd her place. Wanna join?"

I was disgusted by their idea. I just hoped Ms. Carmela to glance back.

All the students— not all. ALMOST ALL, started to throw the paper balls in Amara's direction. The balls began to hit her head, but she didn't look back. She was writing the syllabus as if she didn't feel anything at all.

Damn this class. Damn me for not helping her.

I noticed a droplet falling on her notes. Just then, I realized it. She was crying.

I felt a tug in my chest from watching her tear form. She can ignore the students. But not the pain they are causing her.

I felt bad for her. But I tried to ignore that feeling. After all, I'm seriously outnumbered. I don't stand a chance, do I? I had no choice but to keep quiet.

Ms. Carmela finally turned around, and everyone pretended to be innocent. They are good at acting.

Wait— Amara's a great actor too. She literally wiped her tears so well that no one could doubt she was even crying. Oh my— This girl is really something. I felt myself smiling a bit, but snapped out of my thoughts when Axel nudged my shoulder.

"Yo, bro. What are ya thinking?" I felt Lukie and Zeke's eyes on me, and heat rushed to my cheeks. "You're smiling as if you've already planned my funeral and it's a damn beach party!" joked Axel.

I rolled my eyes. "Shut it, idiot. I wasn't smiling. I was just...thinking"

Lukie, Zeke, and Axel exchanged knowing glances before sighing and nodding. I know they know that I'm lying. But we never push each other to tell the truth until and unless we feel it's important.

The day got over. The rest of the day was boring. Just laughing, talking, gossiping, and flirting. That's what my classmates were doing all day.

Everyone packed their bags before grabbing them and leaving. I walked out of the school, laughing and joking with the boys.

Lukie and Axel. They both could be jerks to girls. But for their friends? They're super loyal! I love these dudes for that. They won't abandon you just for some girls. Not all friends, though. We four are a different team. We love and care for each other. No one can enter our group.

I watched Lukie getting into his luxurious car and leaving (his driver is driving it), Axel driving off in his expensive bike, and Zeke's elder brother coming to pick him up in his expensive car.

I sighed and sat on the bench in the school courtyard. I checked my watch. Twenty minutesmore.Just great.

My mum comes to pick me up everyday. Right after she finishes checking some patients. My mum is a cosmetic dermatologist and clinic chain owner. And my dad? A top real estate developer in the Phillipines, owning multiple condominiums and commercial buildings in Quezon City and BGC. They have a beautiful love story. They met when my dad went to my mum's clinic for a stubborn acne scar, not knowing she owned the place. He kept coming back for "follow-ups" just to see her, bringing coffee each time. After months, he finally asked her out, saying, "Para sa follow-up ulit, pero this time, dinner na." Now they're building dreams together, from skin clinics to skyscrapers.

I smiled and sighed before I heard the sound of a clearing of the throat. I turned around and my eyes widened.

Amara.

She looked at me gently before smiling awkwardly. "S-Salamat...for the chocolate milk." She said softly. "No one has been gentle to me...so I thought you were pranking me or something. Sorry for that."

She bowed a bit, and I smiled, shaking my head. "It's okay. That was the least thing I could do. Amara, right?" I pretended to be uncertain, knowing full well that her name is indeed Amara Velasco.

She nodded. "Yeah...it's Amara. But you can call me Mara, if you want," she said gently. That was the moment I realized that Mara is too kind. Too soft for this cruel world.

I nodded. "Yeah, Mara..."

A black Mercedes pulled in front of the school, and I stood up, turning to Mara. "I've to leave now. Uh...how are you going home, anyway?" I asked curiously.

Mara sighed. "My family driver's coming. Bye, then..."

I nodded before walking away, my heart pounding in my chest. UGH! THIS GIRL'S REALLY SOMETHING!

I got into the passenger seat. My mum looked at me with a smile, "Who was that, sweety? Your girlfriend?"

I sighed before pouting at my mum. I'm always like a child around her. "Mum, please."
