Chapter 1 - A Sweet School-Time Story

This is a story from a small town—a place where life moved slowly, where mornings began with the sound of temple bells and ended with children playing cricket in open fields. In the heart of this town stood a school, simple and old, with blue-painted gates and large neem trees that gave shade to students during hot afternoons. The school wasn't big or fancy, but it had something special: a peaceful environment, caring teachers, and hundreds of little stories being made every day.

Every morning, students walked in through the school gates in neat uniforms, some sleepy-eyed, some chatting away with friends. As the first bell rang, everyone gathered in the assembly ground. Morning prayers echoed through the air, followed by the national anthem and announcements. There was something very comforting about this daily routine—the kind that becomes part of you without even realizing it.

Among the sea of students stood Deepika, a girl from Class 8. She was someone you might not notice right away in a crowd—not because she wasn't special, but because she was quiet. She usually stood in the second row from the back, her hands folded neatly during prayers, her eyes lowered, and a soft expression on her face. Deepika wasn't the type to talk loudly or make jokes during assembly. She preferred silence and often seemed lost in her own world.

But Deepika was smart—sharp in studies and thoughtful in her answers. Teachers appreciated her for her discipline and calm nature. She kept a small group of close friends, and even with them, she wasn't the talkative kind. She'd rather listen than speak, but when she did speak, it was always meaningful. She had a beautiful handwriting, loved reading short stories in Hindi textbooks, and secretly enjoyed drawing flowers in the last pages of her notebooks.

Then there was Manish, a boy from Class 9. Manish was the complete opposite of Deepika in many ways. He was full of life—always smiling, always moving, and always talking. Everyone in school knew him, not just because of his friendly nature, but because he was a fantastic dancer. Be it Independence Day, Teachers' Day, or Annual Day—Manish was always on stage, performing with confidence and joy. He had a charm that made people want to be around him. Teachers liked him for his energy, though sometimes they had to remind him to focus more on studies than on dance rehearsals.

Manish had many friends and was almost never seen alone. He'd laugh loudly, share lunch with half the class, and even help the junior kids when they couldn't carry their heavy school bags. But even with all that going on in his life, something changed one ordinary morning during school assembly.

That morning, as the students stood in their rows, hands folded and heads bowed for prayer, Manish's eyes casually scanned the crowd—as they often did when he was bored. That's when he noticed her.

Deepika.

She wasn't doing anything special. She was just standing there, like she did every day. But something about her was different. Maybe it was the way she closed her eyes during prayer, or the calmness on her face. Maybe it was the soft, genuine smile she had without even realizing it. Whatever it was, it caught Manish's attention.

At first, he didn't think much of it. He noticed her, and then forgot. But the next day, his eyes automatically searched the crowd again—and there she was, standing in the same spot, quietly focused, still unaware that someone had begun noticing her.

This kept happening for a few days.

Manish didn't tell anyone. Not his best friend, not the boys in his dance group, not even his cousin who studied in the same class. He wasn't sure what he felt—he just knew that he was curious. There was a strange peace in watching her, like looking at a quiet painting in the middle of a noisy room. He didn't know her name yet. He had never spoken a word to her. But in his mind, she had already become part of his day.

Meanwhile, Deepika had no idea any of this was happening. For her, school continued like always. Classes, assignments, the occasional nervousness before a math test, the comfort of her tiffin during lunch break—everything moved on in its usual rhythm. She had no idea that a boy from the class above hers had started noticing the little things about her that even she didn't pay attention to.

And so, quietly, with no grand moment, no dramatic meeting, and no exchange of words, something had started.

It wasn't love. Not yet. It was something much gentler—an interest, a silent connection, the kind of feeling that doesn't need to be spoken to be felt. It was a beginning.

In that small school, where the sound of the bell marked every moment, and friendships usually started over shared erasers or help with homework, a quiet bond was taking shape between a cheerful boy and a shy girl. Neither of them knew it yet, but the story of their friendship had already begun—with just a few glances, a soft smile, and the stillness of a school prayer.
