The sun was dipping behind the horizon, its fading light casting a warm glow across the Fairy Tail guildhall. The golden hour shimmered through the windows as laughter and chatter filled the air. Most of the guild members had returned from their missions, and a comfortable peace had settled.
Shinra stood near the guild's request board, casually flipping through some fliers, when a soft voice behind him made him pause.
"Hey," said Erza.
He turned to see her in her casual attire—simple armor-less clothes, rare for her, which made her look softer, almost vulnerable. A loose white blouse, her red hair tied in a single low ponytail. She looked… different. Less like Titania, more like Erza.
"Hey," Shinra replied, smiling. "Looking for a mission?"
She shook her head. "Actually, I was wondering if you'd like to join me for tea. There's a quiet spot just outside town. I thought… maybe we could talk."
Surprised but pleasantly so, Shinra nodded. "I'd like that."
---
They found a hill on the outskirts of Magnolia, just high enough to overlook the town below. The stars were beginning to appear in the early night sky. Erza had packed a small basket—tea, sandwiches, even a slice of strawberry cake, which she shyly admitted was her favorite.
Shinra sat beside her, their shoulders almost touching. "You come here often?"
"Sometimes," Erza said softly, pouring tea into small cups. "When things get overwhelming… I like the quiet."
"Hard to imagine you overwhelmed," Shinra said, gently teasing. "You're the one everyone relies on."
She laughed, but it was a quiet, hollow sound. "I try to be. But… even Titania has cracks."
He looked at her, silent, waiting.
Erza sighed, staring into the steaming cup in her hands. "I don't talk about my past often. But… with you, I feel like I can."
Shinra gave her his full attention. "I'm here. No judgment."
"I grew up in the Tower of Heaven. A prison, really. We were forced to build it… as children. Treated like nothing. I lost people. People I couldn't protect. I fought, I survived, but… sometimes, I wonder if I ever really escaped that place."
Her voice cracked just slightly, and Shinra resisted the urge to reach for her hand.
"You did escape," he said, his tone steady. "You found freedom. Family. A guild that loves you. And you became a light for others—even if you carry shadows inside."
She looked at him, her eyes wide. "You always know what to say, don't you?"
"Not always. But with you… I try."
A long silence followed, comfortable and quiet. Erza picked up the slice of strawberry cake and held it out.
"Want to try it? It's the best thing I've ever tasted."
Shinra took a bite, then smiled. "Sweet. Like you."
Her cheeks turned a fierce red, and she quickly turned away, pretending to sip her tea. "D-Don't say things like that so easily…"
Shinra chuckled. "But it's true. Behind all the armor, you're kind. Loyal. Honest."
She stayed silent, her blush deepening.
"You don't always have to be strong, Erza," he continued. "Not with me. I want to know the real you—the one behind the sword and titles."
She finally turned to him, eyes soft, shimmering slightly. "You already know more than most. And… I want to know more about you too. We keep talking about me, but your past is a mystery."
Shinra hesitated, looking up at the stars. "Some truths are hard to speak. Not because I don't trust you… but because I fear they'll pull you into something darker. I've seen things, done things that…"
"You're part of Fairy Tail now," Erza interrupted gently. "Whatever your past, we'll face it together."
A soft smile tugged at Shinra's lips. "You really are incredible."
"And you're… confusing," she replied, flustered again.
"In a good way?"
She looked away, then back at him. "Maybe."
The moment stretched between them, unspoken emotions drifting in the space of that starlit night. No declarations, no grand gestures. Just two hearts beginning to open, just a little more.
---
They walked back to the guild in silence, but it was the kind of silence that felt rich, full of thoughts and emotions left unsaid.
As they neared the guildhall, Erza stopped.
"Thank you for tonight," she said.
"Thank you for trusting me," Shinra replied.
She looked like she wanted to say more, then instead did something entirely unexpected—she stepped forward and gently kissed his cheek.
Then, flustered and red-faced, she turned away quickly and marched into the guild.
Shinra touched his cheek, stunned.
"Well," he murmured to himself, a smile blooming. "That was unexpected."
From the shadows near the window, Mira watched, her lips curled into a knowing smile. "Oh, Erza… you're finally letting someone in."
The quiet battles of the heart had begun. And for once, they were just as powerful as any war.
