Chapter 10 - Chapter Ten  The Hunt Begins

It was a dark and moonless night at the military base in Miami. Standing tall, looking for any sign of movement was Lieutenant John Watts. In his late forties with a clean military record,. he was over six foot tall, bald, with dark, black skin and a large scar on his right cheek. As he looked over to his left something caught his eye. A small, military Jeep with its headlights flashing came to a halt and one of the soldiers under his command came running up to him.

'Sir,' he said, stopping in front of him and taking a deep breath, 'Our guest has arrived and we are awaiting your instructions.'

'Very good, soldier,' he said as he began walking towards the vehicle, 'No further orders until our guest is out of the Jeep. You and the rest of your unit will escort her to the barracks,' he turned and gave the young man an angry glance, 'Do I make myself clear?'

The young man stood to attention, 'Sir, yes, sir,' he shouted as Watts continued to walk towards the Jeep.

Making his way to the back, he opened the door, and from the back seat stepped a scientist. She was in her late forties with shoulder length, light brown hair, wearing a lab coat and a pair of blue glasses. She appeared warm and friendly.

Watts looked at her and swallowed hard, 'Welcome to Miami, Dr Young, it is an honour to have you he…'

Dr Young held up a hand to cut him off, 'I'm not here to be welcomed by you or anyone else, Lieutenant,' she said sharply as she began walking with him, 'I'm here under orders from both the American and British governments to hunt and capture the failed super soldiers who escaped from our private facility in the U.K.'

She stopped for a moment and Watts looked at her, 'So, it's true that there are mutants all over the globe?'

Dr Young gave him another icy stare as she began walking towards the entrance to the base, 'Yes, Lieutenant,' she said matter-of-factly, 'I created the serum that transformed citizens into mutants. I was ordered by the military to prepare them to be super soldiers for war.'

She paused as she went through a set of double doors and into the base. Waiting for her on the other side were a group of soldiers, she looked at Watts as one of them began to scan her.

'You're all clear, ma'am.' he announced, smiling.

She and Watts continued down the corridor, 'So, that was the government's plan all along?' He said as he caught up with her, 'Using unwitting volunteers to be transformed and converted into fodder for war?'

Dr Young stopped again, 'These test subjects could have revolutionised the battlefield, saving lives by preventing unnecessary deaths. Are you telling me, Lieutenant, innocent lives aren't worth saving?'

Watts stepped back from her, 'You know as well as I do, Doc, war doesn't care whether you are a solder, a civilian, or even a child, there will always be innocents who will lose their lives.'

After listening to what the lieutenant said, Dr Young's face dropped, 'I suppose you're right.' She agreed as they carried on walking towards the next set of double doors, 'but I still need your help to track these mutants down.'

Holding a door open for her, he let her walk through, 'What help do you need from me and how can I be of assistance?'

From her pocket, she pulled a photo of a slim young woman with long, blonde hair who looked normal apart from her green skin.

'Who is this girl?' Watts asked with a puzzled look on his face.

'That was my first test subject. Her name is Stacey Roberts and I believe that she is in Miami somewhere.' Watts paused for a moment as he looked at the photo.

'I know this girl,' he paused again, still inspecting the photo, 'Or… at least, I know someone who looks very much like her, I can't tell for certain.'

Dr Young eyed him for a moment before laughing, 'Well, Lieutenant. you had better start talking, command wants us to find her and place her and those like her under arrest.'

Watts looked at her and smirked, 'Don't worry yourself, Doc, me and my men will find her. I promise you that, for sure.'

At that moment, his mobile phone rang. Pulling it out of his pocket, he answered it, 'Watts, hello. Yes.' Finishing his call, he turned to Dr Young, 'There has being a sighting of someone who fits Stacey Roberts' description and now you have a witness.'

Dr Young listened patiently and with growing excitement, rubbing her hands together with glee.

'You look pleased.' He said as he started to smile.

'That has just made it easy for us both, Lieutenant,' she said as she started laughing,

'I have put a request in to command to question the witness about what she saw and where our friend is.'

Dr Young stopped and looked at Watts, 'What is the witness' name?'

'Jennifer Williams.' he said as they headed towards the barrack

s with a spring in their step.
