Cherreads

Chapter 12 - Chapter 12: Pack Hunters

The Nox moved like a pack of wolves, if wolves were made of shadow and existential dread. Aiko was really starting to hate her life.

Darkness. Then a throbbing pain. Everywhere. Her head. Her chest. Every single cell in her body screamed.

Aiko gasped, her eyes flying open. She was lying on cold, hard concrete. The air smelled of dust and something metallic. Like stale blood.

She pushed herself up. Her muscles protested. Every joint screamed. Her vision swam. Black spots danced at the edges.

"Kael?" she rasped. Her voice was thin. Barely a whisper.

He was there. Kneeling beside her. His face was pale. His dark hair fell across his forehead. His eyes, usually piercing, were wide. Haunted. And filled with a profound, agonizing realization.

The cracks on his skin were gone. His form was solid. Stable.

She had done it. She had saved him.

But at what cost? She felt utterly, completely drained. Like an empty husk.

"Aiko," he whispered, his voice raw. He reached out. His hand, still cold, touched her cheek. "You... you sacrificed your life. For me."

Aiko flinched. Pulled her head away. The memory of his betrayal. His cold logic. His choice. It still burned.

"Don't," she muttered. "Don't pretend you care. You chose them. You chose the rules. Over me."

Kael's face contorted in pain. His eyes were filled with a torment she could feel through the binding. His agony. His despair. His desperate struggle between duty and something else. Something human. Something that felt suspiciously like... overwhelming guilt.

"It was not a choice, Aiko," he rasped. "My duty is absolute. But... I did not anticipate... this." He gestured vaguely between them. "Our bond. Your sacrifice."

"My sacrifice was illogical, right?" Aiko scoffed, pushing herself to her feet. Her legs trembled. "Unproductive. Against the rules."

"It was... an act of profound compassion," Kael stated, pushing himself up too. His form was steady now. Strong. "And it has changed everything."

Aiko glared at him. "Changed what? Are you suddenly going to tell Heaven to shove their rules where the sun don't shine? Are you going to stop reporting on me?"

Kael was silent. His gaze dropped.

Aiko felt a fresh wave of anger. And betrayal. "See? Nothing's changed. You're still their puppet. And I'm still your 'threat' that needs to be 'eliminated'."

"No!" Kael snapped, his head snapping up. His eyes, though still haunted, burned with a fierce intensity. "I will not allow them to eliminate you. Not now. Not after this."

Aiko stared at him. "And how do you plan to stop Heaven, Kael? Are you going to fight your own kind? Break your sacred oath?"

He was silent for a moment. His jaw tightened. A muscle in his cheek twitched.

"If necessary," he finally said, his voice low. Grim. "My oath is to the balance. And you, Aiko, are now integral to that balance. Your existence. Your power. Your... humanity."

Aiko scoffed. "My humanity is what got me into this mess in the first place. And it's what you've been trying to suppress since we met."

"It is a paradox," Kael conceded. "But it is our reality. And we must protect it."

Suddenly, a low growl vibrated through the concrete. It wasn't Kael's voice. It was deeper. More guttural. And it came from all around them.

Aiko froze. Her heart hammered against her ribs. The familiar cold dread.

Nox.

"They're here," Aiko whispered.

Kael's eyes narrowed. He looked around the cavern. His energy blade shimmered into existence in his hand. It pulsed with a fierce light.

"They are coordinated," Kael stated, his voice grim. "They have sensed your power. Your amplified signature. The binding has made you... luminous."

"My 'cosmic glow stick' problem, you mean," Aiko retorted, but her voice trembled.

The growls intensified. Echoing from the dark corners of the cavern. From the tunnels leading in.

Shadows began to coalesce. Twisting. Writhing. Forms of smoke and malice. Their red eyes burned. A hungry, coordinated gaze.

Not just one or two. Dozens. More than she had ever seen at once. A tide of darkness.

"Oh, you've got to be kidding me," Aiko muttered. Her powers. She had trained. She had learned. But dozens? This was overwhelming.

The Nox surged forward. A wave of shadow. Their growls intensified. A chorus of pure, predatory hunger.

"Aiko! Behind me!" Kael's voice. Sharp. Urgent. He positioned himself in front of her. A shield. His form, though no longer shimmering with erosion, radiated a cold, unwavering defiance.

The Nox crashed into them. A mass of shadowy claws and teeth.

Kael met the front line. His blade flashed. A blur of silver light. He moved with impossible speed. A dance of death. Precise. Brutal.

He sliced through one Nox. It shrieked. Dissolved into dust. But two more immediately took its place. The sheer numbers were staggering.

Aiko felt a surge of panic. They were too many. This wasn't just a fight. This was a siege.

"What do I do?" Aiko yelled over the din of battle. The guttural growls of the Nox. The faint, high-pitched screams of their victims.

"Strengthen your shield!" Kael commanded, parrying a simultaneous attack from three Nox. "Make yourself invisible to them! They are drawn to your light!"

Aiko closed her eyes. Focused. Pulled her energy inward. Tried to become a void. A null point.

It was harder now. The sheer number of Nox. Their collective malice. It pressed against her. Trying to break her. To consume her.

We see you.We hunger. You are ours.Join the shadow.

She gritted her teeth. Pushed harder. Imagined a wall of pure nothingness around her. A black hole of spiritual energy.

The whispers lessened. The pressure eased. She opened her eyes. The Nox seemed to hesitate. Their red eyes darted around. As if they couldn't quite pinpoint her. As if her light had vanished.

"It's working!" Aiko yelled. A surge of grim satisfaction.

"Good!" Kael shouted, pushing back a hulking Nox that tried to flank him. "Now, assist me! Channel your Soul Resonance! Unravel them!"

Aiko extended her hands. Golden light flowed. Not a blast. A precise, controlled stream. She aimed at the nearest Nox. The one that had been trying to find her.

It shrieked. Its form twisted. Distorted. Like taffy being pulled apart. Aiko pulled. Unraveled.

The Nox dissolved into nothingness. A clean, silent erasure.

"One down!" Aiko yelled. "Dozens to go! This is going to take a while!"

Kael was a whirlwind of motion. His blade flashed. He moved with a brutal efficiency. Cutting down Nox after Nox. But the sheer volume was overwhelming. They kept coming. Surrounding them.

The cavern was filled with the sounds of battle. The clash of Kael's blade. The shrieks of the Nox. The low, guttural growls.

Aiko felt the drain. The immense drain. Her body protested. Her head throbbed. But she kept fighting. Unraveling Nox after Nox.

She saw a pattern. The Nox weren't just attacking randomly. They were trying to flank Kael. To get past him. To get to her.

The twist. The Nox aren't just attacking randomly—they're trying to capture Aiko alive.

"Kael!" Aiko yelled. "They're not trying to kill us! They're trying to get to me!"

Kael, locked in a brutal exchange with a particularly aggressive Nox, barely flinched. "Indeed. They seek to exploit your power. To corrupt it. Or to use you as a conduit."

"A conduit for what?" Aiko demanded, unraveling another Nox that lunged at her.

"For the larger entities," Kael replied, his voice strained. "The ones who orchestrate these attacks. They require a vessel. A gateway."

Aiko felt a cold dread. They wanted to use her. Not just destroy her. That was worse. Far worse.

The Nox pressed in. A wall of shadow. They were trying to corner her. To separate her from Kael.

"They're trying to isolate me!" Aiko cried. "They're pushing us apart!"

"Maintain formation!" Kael commanded. He moved with brutal efficiency, his blade a silver blur. He was a force of nature. But even he was starting to slow.

A particularly large Nox, a hulking mass of shadow, lunged at Kael. Its claws, sharp as razors, aimed for his chest.

Kael parried. But the force of the blow sent him stumbling back. He slammed against the cavern wall. A faint shimmer of light, like cracks, appeared on his skin. The erosion.

"Kael!" Aiko cried. Her heart clenched. He was bleeding light. Again.

"Focus, Aiko!" he gasped, pushing back against the hulking Nox. "They are relentless!"

The Nox, seeing Kael momentarily incapacitated, surged towards Aiko. A dozen shadowy forms. Their red eyes burned with triumph.

Aiko stood her ground. She extended both hands. Golden light flowed. A vortex. A spiraling current of energy. She wrapped it around the nearest Nox. Pulling. Unraveling.

But there were too many. They swarmed her. Their shadowy forms pressing in. Their coldness seeped into her. Trying to consume her.

Yield. It is easier.Become one with us.

Aiko gritted her teeth. "Never!" She wouldn't give in. She wouldn't become like them.

She pushed her power outward. A desperate surge. A wave of pure, raw Soul Resonance.

The Nox shrieked. Recoiled. But they didn't dissolve. They merely stumbled back. Their forms flickering.

Aiko felt the drain. The immense drain. Her body screamed in protest. Her vision blurred. Her head throbbed. She was pushing herself too far.

Kael, seeing her struggle, roared. A primal, guttural sound. Not human. Not Reaper. Something else. Something ancient.

He surged forward. A blinding wave of pure, celestial energy erupted from him. It slammed into the Nox. Pushing them back. Destroying them.

The Nox shrieked. Dissolved into nothingness. In droves.

The wave of energy continued. Expanding. Pushing back the remaining Nox. Creating a clear circle around them.

Aiko stared, aghast. Kael was standing. But his form was shimmering violently. The cracks on his skin were glowing with an unbearable intensity. He was bleeding light. Profusely.

He had pushed himself too far. Far beyond his limits.

He stumbled. Collapsed to his knees. His energy blade dissipated.

"Kael!" Aiko cried, rushing to him. She knelt beside him. His skin was cold. Too cold.

"The erosion," he rasped, his voice barely audible. "Accelerated. Beyond... control."

Aiko felt a surge of terror. He was dying. Really dying this time.

She placed her hands on his chest. Tried to send her energy. To reinforce. To sustain.

But it was different now. His form was too unstable. Her energy seemed to dissipate into him. Without effect.

"It's no use," Kael whispered. "My essence is... unraveling."

Aiko felt a profound despair. Tears streamed down her face. "No! I won't let you!"

She closed her eyes. Focused. Not on her power. But on the binding. On the connection.

She felt it. A faint, almost imperceptible hum. Their intertwined essences.

She pushed her will into it. Not to heal. Not to sustain. But to hold. To anchor. To prevent him from dissipating.

She felt a sharp, agonizing pain in her own chest. A drain unlike any she had ever experienced. Her life force. Pouring into him. Not just a trickle. A torrent.

Aiko gasped. Her vision went white. Her body screamed in protest. She was giving him everything.

Kael gasped. His eyes flew open. He looked at her. His winter storm eyes wide with shock.

"Aiko!" he rasped. "What are you doing? You will destroy yourself!"

"I'm not letting you die, you idiot!" Aiko sobbed. "Not after everything! Not after you saved me!"

She kept pushing. Her body trembled violently. Her knees buckled. She fell forward. Resting her head on his chest. Pouring her life into him.

Kael's form stabilized. The violent shimmering lessened. The cracks on his skin receded. Slowly. Painfully.

He was absorbing her. Taking her life force. To keep himself whole.

Aiko felt herself fading. Her consciousness slipping. The world around her grew dim.

The last thing she heard was Kael's voice. Raw. Filled with a profound, agonizing realization.

"You... you are sacrificing your life. For me."

Then, a sudden, blinding flash. Not from Kael. Not from her. But from her.

Aiko's power. It surged. Beyond her control. Beyond anything she had ever experienced.

A massive spiritual beacon. Golden light. Pure. Unadulterated. It erupted from her. Blasted through the cavern ceiling. Pierced through the earth. Shot into the night sky.

A column of pure, raw energy. Visible for miles. For realms.

During the battle, Aiko's power surges beyond her control, and she accidentally creates a massive spiritual beacon that can be seen from the celestial realm.

The last thing Aiko saw before darkness consumed her was the light. Her light. Burning brighter than a thousand suns. A signal. A call.

And then, nothing.
