Chapter 14: Whispers of the Winter Soldier & Dark Money
The Guild was humming. Adam felt less like a sarcastic fanboy and more like a harried CEO of a very dangerous, very secret start-up. His personal GP was steadily climbing as his members completed missions, and the increased tax rates from Level 2 were certainly helping.
The reports flowing in were a mix of the mundane and the deeply unsettling.
From Darcy, the digital wizard: [Darcy Report – Mission 'Digital Dust-Up' Update]:Okay, so, my basic hacking skill book definitely helped. I'm seeing more coherent patterns now. SHIELD's internal networks are still a nightmare, but I'm finding data pockets. Lot of traffic about 'Project Insight' - seems to be some kind of global defense grid, but the specs are… ambitious. Also, found some weird financial data. Shell companies, off-shore accounts, huge sums of money moving around discreetly. Looks like they're feeding into some high-level defense contractors. The weird part? Some of those contractors have… very old ties to obscure military projects. Like, pre-WWII obscure.
Adam nodded. Hydra's financial network, slowly but surely. Darcy was getting there.
Then, Yelena's latest update from her 'Widow's Shadow' mission: [Yelena Report – Mission 'Widow's Shadow' Update]:Found another Red Room safe house. Empty, but very recently used. Traces of a specific type of super-soldier serum residue – not the Captain America kind. This one seems… more aggressive. And in the files I managed to salvage, fragmented notes. Repeated mentions of 'Asset'. 'Winter Soldier'. 'Package'. And a set of schematics for a… very advanced bionic arm. Looks like something out of a comic book. Or my nightmares. This 'Asset' is apparently a ghost. Kills, vanishes, leaves no trace. Sounds like something even the Red Room feared.
Adam's blood ran cold. The Winter Soldier. Bucky Barnes. He knew this was coming, but hearing it, seeing the cold, clinical details, was a different beast entirely. This wasn't just a project; it was a person, a victim, a weapon. This was going to be complicated.
And finally, Jeremy's intel from the heart of SHIELD: [Jeremy Report – Mission 'Clean Sweep' Update]:SHIELD is in turmoil post-Loki. Fury's trust issues are through the roof. Lots of internal power struggles. More whispers about 'Project Insight' being fast-tracked. And I'm seeing more and more directives coming from… an internal council. The World Security Council. They seem to be gaining significant influence over Fury. Also, strange security protocols. New, higher-level clearances that even I can't touch. Makes me wonder what they're trying to hide now.
Adam leaned back, rubbing his temples. It was all interlocking. Project Insight, the Winter Soldier, Hydra's resurgence, the World Security Council's manipulation… It was the slow, insidious creep of the snake coiling around SHIELD, ready to strike.
His members were doing excellent work, their loyalty percentages steadily rising with each successful mission and GP payout. He needed to keep them focused, keep them sharp. The intel was invaluable, but it was just intel. He needed to start planning for action.
He checked the Guild Master Store. No new 'Information Packets' on the Winter Soldier specifically, but there were general 'Hydra Operations' packets. He hesitated. He had foreknowledge, but the precise details of Hydra's resurgence, especially post-Avengers, were getting murky. His partial foreknowledge conversion had generalized some of the finer points, like exact locations or personnel.
He decided to hold off. He had enough to go on for now. His priority remained Wanda and Pietro. They needed to be ready.
"Alright, team," Adam typed into the Guild comms, a serious tone overriding his usual quips. "Excellent work on the intel. Darcy, keep digging into those shell companies. Yelena, 'Winter Soldier' is a high priority. Find out everything you can without putting yourself in danger. Jeremy, keep an eye on 'Project Insight' and the World Security Council. This is all connected. We're looking at a serious, systemic threat, one that's been hiding in plain sight."
He ended the message, a grim resolve settling over him. He was building an army, a secret one, but an army nonetheless. And they were going to need every ounce of power they could muster.
