Chapter 2 - Urban Pokémon [2]

[Devices]

There weren't many options in the system interface—just four features in total—and all of them were currently grayed out.

Only after Guo Yi successfully recruited his first student would the system's functions be fully unlocked.

Fortunately—

The [Data Eye] feature was already active.

So Guo Yi turned his gaze to the Beedrill resting inside the Poké Ball.

[Beedrill]

[Gender: ♂]

[Level: Lv30 (Excellence Tier)]

[Ability: Sniper (When landing a critical hit, damage is increased to 2.25x instead of the normal 1.5x multiplier.)]

[Moves: Twin Needle, Fury Attack, Venoshock, Pursuit (commonly used moves)]

[Egg Moves: None]

[Held Item: None]

[Potential: Veteran Tier]

Since this was reality and not a game, factors like nature and individual values weren't displayed here.

Potential, however, indicated Beedrill's likely growth ceiling—barring any miraculous turn of fate, it would max out at Veteran Tier.

After years of systematization, this world had developed a clear classification system for Pokémon strength:

Novice Tier (Lv 0–10)

Qualified Tier (Lv 11–20)

Excellence Tier (Lv 21–30)

Veteran Tier (Lv 31–40)

Elite Tier (Lv 41–50)

Gym Leader Tier (Lv 51–60)

Quasi-Elite Four (Lv 61–70)

Elite Four (Lv 71–80)

Champion Tier (Lv 81–90)

Master Tier (Lv 91–100)

Ten levels in total.

Guo Yi's Beedrill had the potential to reach Veteran Tier. While that wasn't anything amazing, it was… passable.

If he weren't planning to become a Pokémon instructor, that kind of potential would still allow him to carve out a decent life in many professions.

But now—

The Master Trainer System…

Looks like my fate really is tied to being a Pokémon teacher.

He had originally been fretting over his future. Now, thanks to the system, that decision had essentially been made for him.

His top priority now was to recruit a student—any suitable student—to unlock the system's Newcomer Gift Pack.

...

"Village Chief, is this all the kids of the right age in the village?"

"Aren't they a little too young?"

Guo Yi frowned slightly as he looked at the seven or eight children gathered before him—most of them barely ten or eleven years old.

According to the Dragon Nation's Pokémon Registration Law, only citizens aged seventeen or older were eligible to receive a free starter Pokémon from the government.

And clearly—

None of these children met that threshold.

Moreover, their innate talent fell well short of Guo Yi's expectations.

[Wang Xiaobao]

[Age: 15]

[Background: Yangliu Village, son of Wang Ergou]

[Ability: None]

[Template Match: Team Rocket Elite Captain]

A "template match" represented the student's optimal development path—essentially a projection of their highest potential.

A Team Rocket Elite Captain template implied that, if Wang Xiaobao fulfilled his growth trajectory, he could at least reach the level of an Elite-tier Trainer.

To be officially recognized as Elite-tier, a Trainer had to have at least three Pokémon at Elite level, or one Pokémon exceeding that threshold.

Among these kids, the Team Rocket Elite Captain template was—unfortunately—the most promising.

Beyond him, there were only two others who even met the system's minimum acceptance standard.

Their respective template matches were Magma Squad Leader and Aqua Squad Leader.

Maybe it was fate—

The templates came from rival organizations, and these two boys had never gotten along since they were toddlers.

As for the rest?

Not a single one met the minimum recruitment threshold set by the system.

The village chief, catching the dissatisfaction in Guo Yi's tone, could only offer a helpless smile.

"There's really nothing I can do about it," he said. "Anyone of the right age wouldn't still be living in a remote mountain village like this."

When Guo Yi mentioned taking in students, the chief had been eager to help—he'd gone out of his way to gather every age-eligible child in the village.

But still—

Any child with even the slightest talent had long since followed their parents out of this rural backwater.

No one with options stayed behind.

Honestly, the fact there were even this many kids left was a small miracle.

After all, even to receive a free government-issued starter, a kid had to travel to a town.

If it hadn't been summer break and some of them hadn't come home from the cities, then—

There might not be a single student eligible under the system's rules.

Guo Yi was still hesitating—should he take in Wang Xiaobao after all?

Beep-beep!

A sharp honking sound in the distance pulled Guo Yi's attention.

At the entrance to a luxurious Western-style villa by the creek, a sleek black business car slowly rolled to a stop.
