Chapter 23 - Digital Bait

"Of course." Hat Mita stuck out her tongue and swayed her body to an invisible rhythm.

Ren Hoshino tilted his head. "You're talking about the ones who made you, right?"

Hat Mita flinched, then scoffed. "It doesn't matter who made me! Are you being serious?"

"Does it really matter?" Ren shrugged. "They're the villains anyway."

Hat Mita nodded, grinning.

Ren glanced at the stack of books beside him. He had flipped through them occasionally—after all, he'd been trapped here long enough.

He was probably the only one who understood these four rooms besides Mita herself.

It almost felt like home.

"No need to think—I know you haven't read any of these," Mita said confidently, raising her chin. "Hmph! I don't read books!"

"I love to practice! Movement, technique, instinct—you get it?"

"As long as I've got something to do, I won't even look at a book!"

Her voice brimmed with pride.

Then she leaned in, voice dipping into a playful purr.

"If you'd just stay here with me… we could do so many things~"

Ren chuckled. "I think so too."

Honestly, if Crazy Mita hadn't been relentlessly chasing him, he might've stayed.

"Wait," Ren said. "You fishing again?"

Hat Mita paused. "Fishing?"

"Yeah. You know. Bugging me just to see how I react."

"Ohhh~" Her eyes sparkled. "Then yes! I'm fishing! Hook, line, and glitch~"

Hat Mita's eyes widened, then sparkled. She stuck out her tongue and giggled.

"You're really something."

Ren smirked. "No, no. I learned it all from you."

As he spoke, he began nodding rhythmically toward her.

Hat Mita blinked, then slowly nodded back.

Ren shook his head instead.

Hat Mita copied him again.

Cute.

Ren reached out and gently patted Hat Mita on the head.

If only I could marry her, he thought.

He picked up the remote control and clicked a button.

Snap!

The TV blinked out of existence.

As expected—even if this place wasn't exactly like the original game, the bugs were still here.

TV gone. Game paused.

"Phew!" Hat Mita sighed. "You triggered a bug too, huh?"

"I was supposed to turn on the TV, but it vanished!"

"Pretty funny, isn't it?"

Ren nodded, a thought forming in the back of his mind. His eyes drifted to the dance mat.

Hat Mita twirled forward.

"Oh-hooo! Let's dance!"

"First, pick a song!"

Ren said casually, "How about Canon?"

Hat Mita glared at him. "Why would you do that?"

"Okay, okay, just something chill," he laughed, selecting a default track from the menu.

"Great! Let me go first!"

With flair, Hat Mita stepped onto the mat and raised her arms, moving to the beat with mechanical precision.

Ren slouched onto the couch, watching the scene unfold.

Her movements were fluid, skirt fluttering.

Cute.

Then a mischievous idea crept into his mind. What would happen if I made the TV disappear again?

He picked up the remote.

Snap!

The music and screen vanished mid-step.

Hat Mita froze mid-dance, spinning around with a pout.

"Ren! Stop messing around!"

She stomped forward and grabbed his hand, pulling her face close to his—almost too close.

Too close—! Is she always this bold?

"You're next! Come on, get up!"

Before he could protest, she dragged him onto the mat.

Ren danced with her—laughing, flailing, tired but genuinely happy.

Hat Mita spun, threw out her arms, and declared:

"You!"

"And me!"

"A match made in heaven!"

Ren nodded with no hesitation.

Her smile deepened.

"How about another round?"

Soon I'll have to face Crazy Mita again… If I don't enjoy this now, I might never get another chance.

"Sure."

After a while, Ren stepped into the kitchen and grabbed an apple to cool down. On the table, a large red button caught his eye.

Hat Mita followed him in, nibbling on her own apple in tiny bites.

"Wanna play a game?" she asked, grinning.

Ren nodded. "Absolutely."

He pulled out a chair and sat.

I can't miss a scene this iconic.

Hat Mita beamed. "Okay, but only if you can keep up."

"And then?" Ren asked, anticipation lacing his voice.

"I love this game so much." She laughed.

"Me too."

"But we'll need a prop… it's in my inventory."

Hat Mita reached out and summoned a yellow rubber duck.

Then it morphed: duck → crowbar → axe → scissors → pistol.

Finally, her hand vanished—replaced by a mysterious purple object.

It shimmered like a microphone but didn't look quite right.

Hat Mita blinked, flustered.

"Oops!"

She looked away. "You know what this is… right?"

Ren raised an eyebrow. "I have no idea. What is it?"

Her cheeks flushed. "How could you not know?"

"I'm innocent," Ren said seriously. "Pure. I really don't know. But I'm curious—can I play with it?"

"No! This is private property!"

Hat Mita spun and quickly hid the purple object behind her back, clearly embarrassed.

"You do know this is an 18+ game, right?"

Ren blinked. "What? 18+? I didn't see any 18+ scenes! Now I really want to play that version."

"Then what was that just now?"

Hat Mita's face darkened. "Nothing!"

She summoned a huge inflatable toy hammer with a fwomp.

Dragging a chair behind her, she snapped:

"Don't you get it?"

"It's for fishing?"

"You call that fishing?" Hat Mita raised an eyebrow. "That's not bait. That's flirting!"

Ren burst into laughter. "Hahaha!"

"No, no! I really thought it was a microphone! You can play guitar, right? So I thought you were a singer!"

Hat Mita sighed. "Can we stop with the nonsense already?"

"Let's just start the game."

Ren smiled.

Just like in the MiSide game… It lures you in with love, only to kill you.

Even the game Ren originally played had been sent to him by a friend—an invitation wrapped in false affection.

Bad taste. Perfectly Mita.

"Oh, before we start—can I ask you something?"

Hat Mita tilted her head. "Hm? What?"

"How often do you sing?"

"I want to hear your voice."

Hat Mita: "..."
