Chapter 33 - Character Summary for This Arc

Nine years until the beginning of the Great Pirate Era.

Affiliation: The Georges Family, now the Witch's Crew

・Kanata

The protagonist of this story. Age 16. Natural-type Logia Hie Hie no Mi ice-freezing human.

The "Dragon-Slaying Witch." Bounty: 400 million berries. ONLY ALIVE—capture only.

Captain and navigator.

A beautiful girl with black hair and red eyes. Nearly died in battle against Sengoku, but fortunately left no lasting scars.

Possesses two Log Poses each for the first and second halves of the Grand Line, including spares.

Also possesses Eternal Poses for Providence Kingdom, Hachinosu, and Dressrosa.

Hunted Sea Kings at Little Garden and carved their fangs into a pure white spear. Recently fights primarily by hardening it black with Armament Haki.

Entered the Grand Line from the West Blue and began aiming to conquer the Grand Line.

Has conquered: Troia → Twin Capes → Whiskey Peak → Little Garden → an uninhabited island → Arabasta. Currently sailing toward Drum Kingdom.

At Troia, drove the Larche Family to near-annihilation. At Twin Capes, befriended the doctor Crocus and the Island Whale Laboon. At Whiskey Peak, recruited the doctor Skura as a crewmate. At Little Garden, formed bonds with the giants Dorry and Brogy while surviving and training. At the uninhabited island, chatted with a botanist from the South Blue. In the Arabasta Kingdom, ended up saving Prince Cobra's life.

After a full year of intense training at Little Garden, her Armament Haki reached quite a high level, making weapon hardening and wearing transparent armor possible. By deflecting impacts with her Haki armor, she can now trade blows without giving an inch even against giants—her abnormal growth rate even frightened Dorry and Brogy.

Similarly gained proficiency with Observation Haki, now able to see seconds into the future, though still only a few. She's more skilled with Armament than Observation, so her Observation training results are still lower by comparison.

This stems from Kanata's personal nature—her mentality is so unyielding that strengthening herself comes more easily than "sensing" things like empathizing with others.

Her Conqueror's Haki also manifested more strongly as her other two Haki types strengthened.

She can now properly fight (albeit on the defensive) even against a Marine Admiral.

In Arabasta, she was defeated by the heat and unusually complained, "I'm never coming back here."

Little Garden was also a tropical rainforest so it should have been hot, but apparently Arabasta's heat was incomparable.

Gradually increasing her crew and expanding her forces, she personally believes that rather than piracy—which will eventually hit a dead end—she wants to establish a base somewhere and secure forces that can repel the Government and Marines.

She values order above all else, so the ship's rules are extremely strict. However, they're merely minimum discipline, so unless someone intentionally breaks them, they're basically rules that won't be broken.

Combined with the Celestial Dragons' existence, she harbors doubts about the World Government's order.

Unbeknownst to her, two great pirates in the New World showed signs of knowing about Kanata's mother.

Also, when her survival was reported after a year and she escaped from an Admiral, the director of the orphanage where she once lived apparently muttered, "Summoning storms must run in the blood after all..."

Her true name is [REDACTED], but she doesn't know she also has a family name. She knows nothing about her parents, but those connections will surely follow her.

Her resemblance to her mother is clear enough to see on the wanted poster, but her father's features can't be confirmed from the poster.

・Junshi

A man characterized by red hair and a muscular physique. Age 29.

Combatant.

Somewhat dissatisfied that Kanata always fights the strong opponents. However, when he tried trading blows with giants at Little Garden, he declared, "That's something only idiots do."

Blown to the edge of the island in one hit, he didn't break any bones but his arm went numb and he had to rest for half a day.

Both his Armament and Observation Haki grew reasonably in one year, but watching Kanata grow at an abnormal rate beside him, he resolved to train by fighting Zen to the death.

Zen readily agreed, and both fought to a near-death state.

Thanks to that, his Haki handling apparently improved further.

According to Kanata, who actually fought Zephyr: "If he fights without trading blows directly, he can handle it."

In Arabasta, he had no particular opportunities to fight and sweated through manual labor instead.

Though he has no bounty, Zephyr judged him one of the threats in apprehending the Witch's Crew.

・Kuro

A young man with black hair, black eyes, and tan skin covered in tattoos. Age 23.

Natural-type Logia Yami Yami no Mi darkness human.

(Supposedly) (Self-proclaimed) combatant.

Even with training, he still hasn't gotten much stronger. However, he gained stamina and didn't neglect ability training, so he can use it reasonably well now.

Stronger at fighting than civilians, at least.

Whether due to his ability's nature or his own disposition, he's highly pain-tolerant.

Still curious about everything and constantly smiling.

Since he shows interest in various things at each island they visit and wanders off here and there, Kanata recently ordered someone must always keep watch over him.

He rarely causes problems but does get lost. Not directionally challenged, but moves based on curiosity so often doesn't know the way back.

In Arabasta, he wisely didn't expose his skin and wore layers, but with tattoos even on his face, people still gave him strange looks.

He didn't particularly care.

At Little Garden, he often peeked at Kanata's baths. Kanata didn't particularly mind and let him do as he pleased.

・Georges

A man with black hair, black eyes, about two meters tall. Age 31.

Treasurer.

He'd been troubled by expenses from all the big eaters, but when the ship's doctor joined, medical supply expenses increased—necessary though it was, it gave him a bit of a headache.

In Arabasta, between well-paid manual labor and a job Kanata independently contracted, their coffers warmed considerably, apparently making him very happy.

Simultaneously, Kanata's survival became known to the Marines, and with Admiral Zephyr and Vice Admiral Sengoku among the pursuers, his stomach hurts.

In that sense, he thinks life at Little Garden wasn't bad.

Though it became self-sufficient living, there were no pursuers and the dangers were (compared to sailing) still fewer. However, cigarettes were unavailable, so he ended up quitting smoking naturally.

Like Kanata, he thinks "staying pirates will eventually hit a dead end" and is very concerned about the current unproductive situation.

They must choose: join under a powerful pirate's umbrella, or keep fleeing from various forces while pillaging as wanted criminals.

He believes if they don't choose before it's too late, there will be no path left.

Also values discipline like Kanata. Originally lived as a street tough, but knew that iron rules existed even in the underworld, and outlaws were immediately eliminated as a matter of course.

Particularly to avoid leaving grudges, he suggested establishing ship discipline together with Kanata, noting that not deciding Devil Fruit rights could create cracks from within.

・Scotch

A chubby man with blond hair and blue eyes. Wears sunglasses. Age 31.

Navigator.

Lost some weight training intensely for a year, but his figure returned after gorging and drinking in Arabasta. Since his stamina remained, nobody says anything.

A womanizer who honestly had a hellish time at Little Garden, but let loose somewhat in Arabasta. Understanding that discipline must be strictly followed or he'll be killed (Kanata won't listen to excuses), he enjoyed women in moderation.

Honestly finds being chased by a Marine Admiral mentally taxing, but seeing Kanata fighting properly through binoculars, he's optimistic: "It'll be fine."

Searching for new love, but with the nearby women being the combat-obsessed Kanata and the giant Feiyun, sometimes that fact alone makes him collapse to his knees.

Additionally, he's known Kanata since she was ten (and she's also his boss/he's being watched), leaving him uncertain whether he should even classify her as a woman.

He peeked at Kanata's bath with Kuro at Little Garden, but with feelings closer to a daughter, he thought "This isn't it" and didn't do it again.

・Feiyun

A giant. A woman characterized by long light-purple hair and amethyst-colored purple eyes. Age 39.

Superhuman Paramecia-type Deka Deka no Mi enlargement human. Maximum length: 173 meters.

"Colossal Shadow." Bounty: 80 million berries.

Combatant.

Grew slightly taller over the year.

At Little Garden, meeting the two captains of the Giant Warrior Pirates—admired by giants living in Elbaf—her eyes sparkled.

Both captains, embarrassed by the girl young enough to be their daughter, taught her warrior mentality and combat techniques. Among those Zephyr was wary of, alongside Junshi and Zen.

Trained thoroughly, excelling in close combat.

Can now use Armament Haki. In Zephyr's assessment, judging strength including ability alone, her bounty shouldn't be less than 200 million. However, with the Government's decision not to draw attention to the Witch's Crew, her bounty was deliberately lowered.

Monster strength that can lift warships of the same size.

Getting to meet the admired Giant Warrior Pirates made her elated, and just being praised by Kanata makes her smile—Zen got teary-eyed seeing the formerly quiet Feiyun express emotions this openly.

Can use both Armament and Observation Haki.

Due to her innate nature, she's better with Observation than Armament. Particularly excels at reading opponents' emotions.

・Zen

A Mink of the black bay horse (?) tribe. Age 38.

Combatant.

A hero boasting outstanding martial prowess aboard Kanata's ship.

In terms of technique alone, he's above Kanata, but in an all-out fight using full abilities, it'd be fifty-fifty or slightly favor Kanata.

At Little Garden, demonstrated survival techniques fully and taught that knowledge generously.

Also skilled at Haki handling, using both Armament and Observation at high levels.

When fighting Junshi to the death, he didn't use Electro but fought with full power, ending in a draw. He personally says if they'd continued longer, he would've killed him.

With Electro, he can fight Zephyr head-on.

In Arabasta, with his fur, living was very difficult, but since he doesn't believe in showing weakness, he occasionally nearly got heatstroke.

Though he has no bounty, Zephyr judged him one of the threats in apprehending the Witch's Crew.

・Samuel

A muscular giant of a man about three meters tall. Bald head. Age 28.

Animal Zoan-type Neko Neko no Mi Model "Jaguar" ability user.

Combatant.

Known Georges and company since their thug days on Marx Island. Headache source #2 for Georges and Kanata (source #1 is the often-lost Kuro).

Single-minded and often acts without thinking, so Kanata frequently gives him iron claws and Georges smacks him around.

Originally quick to fight, and fought plenty under Georges, but submitted obediently to Kanata after being taken down without chance to resist.

When they ran merchant ships, mainly hauled cargo with his proud strength. Though single-minded, being repeatedly told "transport carefully without breaking things" means he can actually think when hauling cargo.

At Little Garden, Kanata often stopped him from eating strange things, or when he ate them where Kanata wasn't around, he'd get food poisoning or weird toxins and need Skura's care.

Can use only Armament Haki. That said, still only handles it at a basic stage, so it depends on future training.

Before joining Georges and company, grew up in a normal household, but his father was similarly quick to fight and rarely held jobs, so Samuel was heading the same way when Georges picked him up and he became a thug.

After Kanata arrived, he rapidly became part of a major merchant ship and earned proper income, then his father and departed mother came begging for money, but Samuel gave them severance pay then refused all further contact.

Even when Marx Island was scorched, he didn't show much emotional turmoil.

For him, family was only the Georges Family comrades.

・Skura

A disheveled white-haired, roughly two-meter-tall, slender, sharp-eyed handsome man. Age 25.

Ship's doctor.

Only son of a hospital on the outskirts of Whiskey Peak town.

Inherited medical skills from his father, mainly handling medicines and chart creation at the hospital. When hands were short, he also performed treatments himself, so while not inexperienced, he's still young so not exactly abundant either.

Boarded Kanata's ship on condition they stop at Drum Kingdom once so he could study medicine.

At Little Garden, his knowledge proved immediately useful, with Samuel mainly receiving his care.

Considers Devil Fruit ability users diseased and ultimately aims to extract Devil Fruits from living humans.

To that end, researches medicines effective only on ability users, with Samuel occasionally becoming a test subject.

When he had Samuel drink a prototype at Little Garden, Samuel lost self-control and rampaged, so he watched while verifying what went wrong with the components. (Kanata stopped the rampaging Samuel by throwing him into the sea.)

Having worked at a hospital, he has reasonable stamina. However, he often gets too absorbed, so he's starting to want an assistant who can organize charts and medicines.

His mother was a Devil Fruit user. When their ship sank on a stormy day, Skura and his father survived, but his mother couldn't swim and died.

This made him want to do something about Devil Fruits, which his father watched with a complicated expression.

The type who doesn't choose means for his ends. He'll use pirates or Marines if useful, but has minimum ethics.

Also believes doctors should save anyone dying before their eyes, whoever they are.

・David

A sea urchin man with spiky hair. Height about 180cm. Age 34.

Superhuman Paramecia-type Bomu Bomu no Mi bomb human.

"Bombardment." Bounty: 15 million.

Originally in another pirate crew, reached Little Garden and attacked Kanata's group while they made camp, but was quickly sunk and made to sit formally.

Particularly fears Kanata, whom he couldn't defeat even fighting with his partner.

Fought counter-style, exploding when struck, but against Kanata it didn't work—she deflected impacts and the blast didn't affect her either.

After being hit five or six times and quieting down, most of his ship's supplies were stolen. He tried making camp elsewhere but was attacked by dinosaurs and annihilated.

Survived alone and was picked up by Kanata's group.

He considered dying rather than living in shame, but couldn't muster the resolve to die and chose to live.

Affiliation: Larche Family

・Drevan

Chubby and tall. A man with short black hair and shaved sides. Deceased, age 35.

Leader of the Larche Family, one of the West Blue's five great families.

Based in the port town of Troia, acted to target Kanata but had most of his fleet sunk. When forces plummeted, suffered a coup and the Larche Family was effectively destroyed.

Probably would've still been alive if he hadn't made a move—could've even expanded territory using merchant routes freed up by the Georges Family's departure—but he couldn't do that and died.

Affiliation: Marines

・Belk

A strapping man with silver hair, blue eyes, and glasses. Age 22.

Marine Headquarters Commander. Garp's disciple and subordinate.

Details unknown.

Third year of service. Worked one year with the Arabasta garrison, but this time under Garp's orders became Zephyr's subordinate to pursue Kanata.

Uses a sword as his weapon. The man who made Kanata say "A Commander with that Haki?"

Apparently has a beautiful girlfriend back home.

・Zephyr

Canon character. A giant man with purple eyes and hair. Age 41.

Marine Headquarters Admiral. Bears the epithet "Black Arm."

Received reports that Kanata was in Arabasta Kingdom, received immediate deployment orders from the World Government, and departed Marineford.

Crossed blades with Kanata just before her escape, but permitted her flight before her ability and personal valor.

Evaluated Kanata as a "genius" and lamented her talent. Though he sympathizes somewhat with the Celestial Dragon case, he still separates work as work.

A master of Armament Haki worthy of his epithet. Similarly an outstanding Observation user, possessing strength worthy of an Admiral.

Borrowed subordinate Belk from Garp, contacted Fleet Admiral Kong to arrange additional forces, and pursues Kanata.

Affiliation: None

・Donquixote Homing

Canon character. Celestial Dragon.

The person who requested the World Government make it "capture only" because he wants to speak with Kanata, who killed his brother.

Shows shallow thinking overall.

Affiliation: Arabasta Kingdom

・Nefertari Cobra

Canon character. Arabasta Kingdom prince. Age 17.

Embodiment of action. Goes out as levee construction supervisor and leads the national army to battle monsters.

Often scolded by his childhood friend and guard Igaram and his wife Titi.

When first meeting Kanata's group, he was wary they'd come to kill him, but nothing like that happened, and ultimately ended up having his life saved.

Apparently feels personal obligation for the various ways they helped.

Wants to host them if they come to this country again.

However, Kanata couldn't adapt to this country's heat and insists she'll never return.

Affiliation: Former Rocks Pirates

・Octavia

Details unknown. The person assumed to be Kanata's mother.

Usually wore a mask; few know her real face. Apparently Kanata resembles her so much that seeing the wanted poster made Whitebeard and Golden Lion wonder if she was alive.

All that's known: "Arrogant," "Countless men tried courting her and nearly got killed—or were killed," "Among the monsters gathered in the Rocks Pirates, her abilities were in a league of their own."

Whitebeard and Golden Lion witnessed her sinking into the sea, so they judge her dead, but...
