Tokyo's backstreets weren't meant for heroes.
Kazuki Ren knew that well but yet here he was, collapsed in a pool of his own blood, breathing through cracked ribs and gritted teeth. The alley smelled of rust, rain, and regret. Somewhere in the distance, police sirens wailed like a late apology.
"Stupid… move…" he coughed, spitting out red. His vision blurred. His arms felt like lead. The thugs had long since run, their wallets full and conscience empty. He had jumped in to save a kid. He failed.
Another mistake.
The world around him grew colder. Rain pattered against his skin. His fingers curled around the one thing he had left "a black pendant around his neck", the only keepsake from his mother. It pulsed faintly now, a warmth growing in the metal.
"…Sorry, Mom."
Then everything stopped.
The wind halted mid-whistle. The rain hung suspended in midair. Even pain froze.
A single line of glowing text blinked before his eyes:
[You have been selected by the Primordial Beast Code.]
Ren blinked. Was this death?
[Verifying host integrity…]
[17%… 39%… 71%… Complete.]
[Warning: Host's life signs critical. Emergency transfer initiated.]
"What… the hell?" he whispered.
Then came the light.
Blinding. Pure. Everything shattered "reality, pain, thought" until all that remained was the sound of his heartbeat and a voice that spoke directly into his mind:
[Initializing… Welcome, Beast Sovereign Candidate.]
Somewhere Else…
Ren's back hit solid ground. He gasped for air 'not the smog-choked kind of Tokyo', but fresh, earthy air that smelled like pine and ozone. He opened his eyes slowly.
Blue skies stretched above, broken by floating islands and clouds that shimmered unnaturally. Giant trees towered over distant mountains. In the nearby meadow, deer-sized rabbits grazed peacefully beside glowing blue mushrooms.
"What the…"

A semi-transparent interface appeared before his eyes, hovering in the air like a hologram:

Ren's heart thudded.
"Wait, this is real? This isn't a dream? I died back there... didn't I?"
[Technically, you were 9.2 seconds from death. I intervened.]
The voice was neutral, feminine, yet mechanical, like an AI.
[You are now the bound host of the Primordial Beast Code, the last surviving system of its kind. You were chosen by the will of the Eternal Sovereign.]
"Chosen… by who?" he asked aloud.
[You will understand in time. For now, survive. And tame a beast.]
Ren stood shakily. His body felt… lighter. Stronger, even. His wounds were gone.
A rustling from nearby snapped his attention. Bushes parted as a small creature emerged, something between a wolf pup and a fox, its fur jet black, its eyes glowing faintly blue. A scar ran across its snout.
It growled, baring tiny fangs.

Ren froze. The creature leapt
His instincts screamed.
[Initiating Combat Tutorial…]
The beast lunged, fangs bared, eyes like twin blue embers.
Kazuki reacted instinctively, throwing himself to the side as the creature's claws grazed his arm. Pain seared through him, real pain. This wasn't a game.
[Combat tutorial initiated.]
[Dodging: Successful.]
[Threat level: Low, but fatal if mishandled.]
He rolled across the grass and came up kneeling, heart pounding. The little wolf cub circled him warily, its limbs tense with hunger and fear. Ren's hand tightened around a stone he'd grabbed in the fall.
"Easy, buddy," he muttered. "I don't want to kill you."
[Correction: Host cannot kill the beast.]
[Mission Objective: Tame, not slay.]
"Tame it? I don't even know how!"
[Observe.]
Before him, a glowing ring of blue glyphs appeared beneath the cub's paws. The creature snarled in alarm, trying to leap out but the glyphs pulsed, slowing its movements.

Ren's eyes darted to his inventory panel. Empty. No food. But
He reached for his pendant.
It still glowed faintly. When he gripped it and focused, a warmth pulsed in his palm. The System responded.

[Would you like to offer 10% of your lifeforce to stabilize the creature's condition?]

His eyes widened. "Ten percent of my lifeforce?!"
The cub whimpered now, one paw injured, ribs visible. A vision flickered through Ren's mind "his younger self, cold and alone in a hospital bed, staring out the window while others ignored him".
He grit his teeth.
"…Yes."
[Soul Share initiated.]
Blue light surged from his chest and flowed into the cub. The beast twitched violently, then slowly collapsed into the grass, breathing heavier but no longer hostile. Its eyes 'still wary' met his.
And glowed.
[Taming complete!]

Ren nearly fell backward as the interface exploded with information. But he couldn't look away from the small creature that now padded hesitantly toward him, ears flattened, gaze unsure.
He extended a hand.
The cub 'no, his beast' sniffed it, then nudged it with its snout.
A bond was formed.
[New Name?]
Ren smiled slightly. "Let's call you… Nyx."
The System pulsed approvingly.
[Name registered: Nyx – Voidtail Cub]

[Warning: Beast possesses hidden potential. Evolution path: Unknown.]
"Bloodline… suppressed?" Ren asked, narrowing his eyes.

He looked at Nyx, who now limped beside him, gaze sharp but loyal.
"I don't know what this world wants from me… but I'm done being powerless."
He turned toward the forest-lined horizon, where a faint blue beacon shimmered in the distance.
"Let's show them what we're made of."
