Chapter 42 - A Human Snow Sled

They say life is like a tide. You either resist the current, and drown in the process, or you either follow the flow and survive.

Y-o-u-r c-h-o-i-c-e.

It's quite funny, isn't it?

You have a choice, but at the same time, you don't. True, you have the right to live or die, but you are forced to choose living because that is the very much obvious option.

You aren't suicidal, are you?

-+

I was an average human back on Earth, as normal as any person could get, nothing more nothing less. Like everyone else, perhaps a tad bit different, but other than that, nothing much.

Still.

I was a bit of a unique individual however, because I never had a single stable job, transferring from a job to another. I had graduated from university, or rather, a respected institution with a decent degree, normally like my parents had wanted me, pressurizing me to.

But unlike most people, I wasn't someone who was the most social with others or who aimed for popularity.

But I wasn't an introvert either.

I didn't get flustered by the presence of others, nor did my tongue twist irritably when I spoke to others, as if I had never been in contact with other humans.

That wasn't it, I tell you. Rather, it was a bit different than that why I didn't really like being social with most people, despite chatting quite animatidly with those I am more familiar with. Still, I wasn't uncomfortable with anyone in general.

To be honest, I didn't have many achievements in life other than successfully paying my bills that have been postponed for at least 5 months without taking on any debts.

Yeah, now that I think about it, it really is a pretty considerable achievement in its own way.

I don't think a lot of people could pull that off.

At least, not my friends who kept inviting me to a drink to drink away their sorrows, only to find their debt collectors knocking on their doors the next day.

Good thing I don't drink though. Heard from a doctor it hurts the liver and eats away at your wallet.

Definitely not the best thing to spend your money on. Definitely.

Rather, the best way to spend them would be to use them on cigarettes. At least they are cheaper and more effective, in my perspective.

Hahaha ... oh laddie, those days. Ah, don't mind my accent, I like using this term quite often.

I still remember them knocking on my door one morning, pleading with me to have them sleep in my living room for a single night, which had somehow extended to a whole two weeks, after I kicked them out because of how messy they had made my house.

Apparently, debt collectors don't come at night. It does make sense though; they still need to sleep well so that they can collect well. The logic aligns perfectly.

Hm ...

So ... as you could probably see, I didn't have anything going for me in my life other than the game one of my friends have mentioned on a whim's joke. And that was the main issue to me. The largest of issues, in fact.

I was bored. Incredibly so.

To me, boredom wasn't a fleeting emotion that most people felt. No, not at all.

To me, boredom was a disease that slowly infested on one, eating slowly at his mind, while being harmless at first. It would stay like that for a while, with you having a false sense of security, but when you truly questioned that very notion of security, did realization finally dawn on you that 'Oh, this isn't what I expected. What should I do?'

Boredom to me caused me many things-, anxiety, sadness, apathy, anhedonia, a diverse amount of things that could found in most people if you looked deep enough.

While others looked for an enjoyable life, whether getting a partner i.e. a girlfriend and going on dates with her, checking the newest reels posted by their favourite influencers, streamers, or social media stars, or even having the ambition of getting power, I remained as is.

Passive as ever. One who did things repeatedly, waking up in the morning, brushing my teeth, dabbing at the corner of my eye to remove the sleep out of it without having to wash my face and facing the cold, unmerciful water, getting ready for my job, and leaving.

That is who I was. Ocassionally, I tried to break out of that cycle, whether 'attempting' to change my personality similar to what those websites held as if it was simple, or taking simple medications, nothing considerable worked.

So I decided to just rest from my work for a while. Sleeping had a limit, so I decided to stay laying on things, and passively looking at what was before me.

At home, I stared at the ceiling, while laying on the solid floor. Outside, especially on cloudy days, I laid, looking at the gloomy, grey sky. I didn't hate my life, I neither hated myself, I just couldn't bring myself to.

Almost as if it was ... impossible. I couldn't bring myself to blame some else either.

So I just laid, resting away on life.

It was only later on that I had lost my job because of multplie factors, one of them my lack of eunthesiasm when it came to working. I tried to find other jobs, only to be turned down.

Hm ... a pretty boring story, isn't it?

Well, lets speed up.

So I- [Playback Speed: 10.00x]

This ... seems to be about right. Ok, here. Lets stop here.

It all started on day when one of my debt infested friends had finally landed a job somehow, while I, was unable to. Quite ironic how the world changes so fast. Yesterday it was him without a job, now it was me.

Positions switch quite ruthlessly, huh?

It was more of his annoying pestering during one of the days I had spent with him at a quiet library that he introduced me to some game that he had discovered by chance in the depth of the game market.

Still, I entertained his pointless and childish behavior for the sake of maintaining a magnanimous image.

Part of it was the seemingly good atmosphere and the occasional free cups of coffee that he offered in return. He even suggested to buy dinner for me, on the case that I listen to his ramblings for a while.

I didn't like restaurant food, but food was food.

And how could I, the most merciful of people, not listen to my pleading friend's request and turn him down?

Of course, I agreed to his invitation.

Still, the coffee was pretty good, athoug- ahem, ahem. Sorry for the change of topic.

Hm... Where was I ... ah ... yes, now I remember.

The game.

To be honest, I don't have much to say about the game other than I liked it personally.

I was not that much of a fan of regular games that came down in the market, the most I would do was probably read books on my phone installed in PDF or EPUB format. Pretty unusual.

In the first place, I didn't even have the money to spend a single cent on a extravagant food every while, much less paying for a game.

It was then that my friend, who was in reality was a web developer, mentioned that the new game had just entered its Beta testing phase after being tested multiple times, him being part of the developer team.

He attempted to convince me to pick it up, and I accepted, of course at the expense of being invited to a few meals without having to take out my wallet and check its beyond pitiful contents.

So I think I know who.

OileH (?)

Is?.

Anyways.

And so, I became the third beta tester of the game, or so my friend told me.

And let me tell you.

I 𝚛̶𝚎̶𝚐̶𝚛̶𝚎̶𝚝̶𝚝̶𝚎̶𝚍̶ didn't regret playing it at all. My friend was right.

Everything, the game settings, landscape, plot, story, characters, roles, etc.

All of them.

Were fun.

--------------------------

Did I scare you with that?

Haha, I'm kidding, just kidding.

Yeah, I haven't figured out who Helio is yet, will take some time.

I'm not sure about what Elias meant about me knowing him, but thinking about it right now, won't help much.

Anyways, back to my present situation-
