Chapter 20 - Chapter 20

Valyria – Four Days Before the Doom, The Southern Reaches

The sun burned red in the sky as if the heavens themselves were bleeding. Beneath its wrathful gaze, the plains of southern Valyria were dry and cracked, the once-fertile lands now poisoned by ashfall from restless volcanoes. Animals were silent. Birds no longer flew here. Even the wind crawled like a dying thing.

Kaelarys had sent Lyanna to command the southern diversion—a carefully crafted false rebellion meant to draw the attention of the Dragonlords. And it was working.

Smoke already choked the horizon. Screams echoed faintly from pillaged border-villages. Magic-fire exploded in the distance as squads of Kaelarys's mercenaries, disguised as rebellious miners and outcast blood mages, clashed with House Velerys and House Xhaenor's patrols.

But Kaelarys was not here to watch the fire burn.

He was here for the Stone of Echoes.

Hidden beneath an abandoned temple of Valysar, long-forgotten by history and buried beneath centuries of collapse, the Stone was said to be a conduit for ancient voices—precursors to the Valyrians who had once ruled the sky.

And the Stone knew things.

Things that could help him control the Doom, or even twist it.

The descent was not easy.

Kaelarys entered the ruined temple through a half-collapsed passage of lava-carved obsidian. The air reeked of sulfur and something worse—rot that defied explanation. Two slaves followed him, carrying torchlight enchanted to repel spirits. His sword, Draezhar, hissed in its scabbard, uneasy.

And for good reason.

The further they went, the more unreal the world became.

Walls whispered. Shadows twisted into faces. One of the torches flickered—and a moment later, the younger slave screamed and clawed at his face.

"Kill it!" Kaelarys ordered.

Varyn's blade slid cleanly through the boy's neck.

No hesitation.

The body hit the ground. Black ichor spilled instead of blood.

"A possession," Varyn muttered. "Or something close."

Kaelarys didn't flinch. "The Stone's near. It's testing us."

As they reached the final chamber, the darkness became complete—alive. The room was circular, domed, and in the center stood the Stone: a jagged monolith of violet crystal, humming with forbidden resonance.

And around it… bones.

Dozens of them. Some ancient, others fresher than they had any right to be.

A voice echoed across the chamber, not heard by ears but felt by bone.

"Another seeker. Another fool. Will you listen... or will you burn?"

Kaelarys stepped forward. "I've burned before. I chose fire."

He laid a hand on the Stone.

Pain lanced through him. Not physical. Temporal.

Visions flooded his mind again—this time, clearer. The Doom. The chain reaction of the Firewells. The great eruption at the Heartflame. The screams of dragons burning mid-air. The collapse of every protective ward across the peninsula.

And behind it all—a hand.

A will.

Something wanted the Doom.

"The Doom… was not natural."

Kaelarys opened his eyes.

He was kneeling. Blood leaked from his ears and eyes, his fingers burned raw. But he smiled.

The truth was now a weapon.

He turned to Varyn, who stared at him with wide eyes.

"We leave. Burn the tunnel behind us. No one else sees this place."

As they left, Kaelarys drew a sigil of sealing in midair, fusing the entrance with molten blackfire. The Stone was too dangerous to leave accessible. But its knowledge… that was his now.

Back at the hidden harbor, the fleet's last preparations were underway. New sails enchanted for storm travel had been fitted. The dragons rested uneasily in their nesting caverns, fed fresh game and surrounded by calming runes. Most of the war slaves were now bound by soul-contracts—guaranteeing loyalty, or instant death.

Kaelarys strode across the docks, watching as the last of the provisions were loaded.

Lyanna returned just before midnight, her armor stained with blood and fire.

"The diversion succeeded," she said without preamble. "The southern patrols are fully diverted. Half of House Velerys's wyverns are grounded. We lost a few dozen, but the cover holds."

"And the eggs?" Kaelarys asked.

She opened a satchel and produced two small orbs, wrapped in silk and pulsing with latent fire.

"From House Mardun's keep. One fertile. One dormant. Their vault was unguarded in the chaos."

He took them gently and fed them into his space ring.

Later that night, Kaelarys stood in his forge.

The last of his Valyrian steel was being reforged—not into swords, but into scales.

Armor for Kaezion.

Armor for himself.

Draezhar lay upon the anvil, glowing with unnatural hunger. With the Eye of Urron at his side, he focused, pulling threads of potential into reality.

The forge flared.

The blade screamed.

And then it glowed, etched now with the runes of fire, storm, and memory.

He had everything he needed now.

Almost.

In the deepest hours of the night, Kaelarys sat before a mirror.

The system window shimmered before him.

There was still one thing left.

And it would cost blood.
