Chapter 28 - Chapter 28 — Veils of Deception Beneath the Gilded Mask

The grand hall of Volantis glittered under the glow of countless candles, their flames flickering against high vaulted ceilings that seemed to stretch into eternity. Lords and ladies in silks of crimson and gold laughed softly, their voices laced with practiced politeness and veiled threats.

Kaerys Velaryon moved through the crowd like a shadow, her eyes sharp and calculating. Every smile she returned was a carefully crafted mask, concealing a mind racing to unravel the web of deceit spun around her.

She paused beside Lord Daven, a silver-haired noble with a reputation as ruthless as the sword he carried. His gaze lingered on her with a mixture of curiosity and suspicion.

"You tread dangerous waters, Lady Velaryon," Daven said, voice low enough that only she could hear. "The Merchant Queen trusts few—and even fewer are truly loyal."

Kaerys's smile was slow, deliberate. "Then I shall become one she cannot refuse to trust."

Daven's eyes glittered, the challenge clear. "Be careful. Trust is a fragile thing here… easily shattered."

A Whisper in the Night

Outside the palace walls, the air was thick with the scent of salt and smoke. Jaro the Whisperer slipped through the alleys of the city, meeting a hooded figure who handed him a folded parchment.

"News from the Ashen Hills," the figure said in a harsh whisper. "The Targaron heir moves with the speed of a wildfire. Their magic grows stronger, and they have the loyalty of many houses."

Jaro's eyes darkened. "We must act quickly. If the Targaron unites the clans, no force can stop their rise."

Serenthis and the Fire Within

On the volcanic cliffs, Serenthis curled around her rider, Neron, her scales glowing faintly in the moonlight. Her breath came in short, heated bursts, like the flame of a forge barely contained.

"You feel it too," Neron said softly. "The tension in the air. The coming storm."

Aelthara stepped closer, her hand resting lightly on Neron's arm. "The dragon senses what we dare not yet see. She is the flame—and the fury."

Shadows Gather

In the depths of Cair Volakar, Lady Elira studied a map of the city, her fingers tracing lines of power and influence like a conductor guiding an unseen symphony.

"The families are fracturing," she said, voice cool and steady. "And the Merchant Queen's grip loosens. Soon, chaos will spread like wildfire."

Kaerys's voice cut through the silence. "Then we must be the ones to control the flames."

Elira's smile was thin but approving. "The question is, who will survive the inferno?"

The Dance of Daggers

As midnight approached, a secret meeting unfolded in a hidden chamber beneath the city. Figures cloaked in darkness exchanged words sharp as blades, each calculating their next move in the deadly game.

Neron's name was spoken with reverence—and fear. Some saw him as a savior, others as a threat to be eliminated before his power grew too great.

The air was thick with tension, and the dance of betrayal had only just begun.
