Chapter 67 - Chapter 66: They Strike Again

Chapter 66: They Strike Again

When these rifts and dimensions first appeared, they linked our world to another universe—a place teeming with beasts and creatures that relentlessly attacked us.

To this day, no one truly knows why or how these rifts were triggered. Scientists have proposed various hypotheses: some suggest it was due to an imbalance between the energies separating our worlds, while others believe it was initiated by the "other side," deliberately disrupting these delicate energetic barriers.

However, definitive answers remain elusive. Fortunately, thanks to humanity's newfound advantage—our mutations—we gained the ability to fight back.

Our mutant abilities suddenly granted us the power to stand against them. The war between "us" and "them" was immense, with humanity initially on the defensive. Eventually, the conflict subsided, though it never truly ended.

Encouragingly, the human race has grown significantly stronger since then. Our strength and technology have advanced by leaps and bounds.

Yet, a nagging uncertainty persists: if they were to strike again, could we truly win? Would we stand a chance? We aren't entirely sure, or perhaps, despite our advanced technology and enhanced strength, we simply lack full confidence in our current capabilities.

Our technology has progressed remarkably. We are even capable of creating machines that can open portals. Whether these portals are akin to the original rifts remains unknown, but it is certain that on the other side of these man-made portals is nothing like Earth.

Across these portals lie other planets that once harbored signs of civilizations. Now, however, they are inhabited solely by beasts. Whether these planets were also victims of attacks by the demons, as we call them, or perhaps simply destroyed by these creatures, we are unsure.

Still, we persevered. Our ultimate goal was to create a portal that could lead us directly to our enemies—the demons. If we could somehow discover their location, their base, their hideout, then perhaps we would no longer be caught off guard by their sudden attacks.

Unfortunately, despite countless attempts, our efforts proved to be in vain. In the end, we were only able to link to other planets that harbored these beasts, some of which bore the desolate remnants of destroyed civilizations. Once there, we could effectively utilize the valuable materials found on these planets.

Most importantly, we harvested beast cores, which have become the primary energy source on our planet today. Their appeal stems not only from their high energy content but also from their non-polluting nature and their surprisingly renewable properties.

However, the use of these beast cores wasn't limited to just energy production. Their applications extended even further; some individuals used them to enhance their mutations, while others incorporated them into the creation of weapons that helped bridge the gaps in power between themselves and their more formidable peers.

The Seven Guilds, though distinct in name, strength, and even moral codes, all shared a singular aim: to grow stronger and ensure the safety of our planet—or at least, what was left of it.

Although Earth had undergone significant improvements, these advancements were primarily confined to areas directly under the banner of one of the guilds, as they sought to ensure the best for their followers.

Consequently, vast portions of Earth remained undeveloped. There were areas that felt like stepping into a futuristic metropolis, juxtaposed with others where one felt transported back to a forgotten past.

Like this very area these guys currently found themselves in.

"Can you remind me why we were sent here again?" Conor asked, a young agent from the military. He had striking green hair and piercing blue eyes.

He was dressed head-to-toe in military attire, with armored plating on his shoulders and knees, and sturdy boots. A sword was visible on his back, and the design of its handle clearly indicated it was a beast weapon.

On one of his shoulders, a large silver line carved into the letter 'A' signified his status as a Silver Rank within the military's Apprentice group.

His comrade, a tall young man with well-combed blue hair, walked beside him. He wore an identical outfit, with the sole exception that the blue-haired man had gauntlets instead of a sword.

This man's name was Hans.

Hans and Conor were recent graduates from the military academy.

Under normal circumstances, military graduates were expected to serve the military for a period of time before being free to pursue other paths.

This policy was precisely what allowed the military to maintain one of the largest forces among the guilds—second only to the Mreps Guild.

"How many times will I tell you this? We are only here on observation," Hans stated, a hint of frustration in his voice.

"The mission is for us to observe and report everything we see in the field, both normal and abnormal." This wasn't the first time he'd explained this, yet for some reason, it just wouldn't stick in Conor's head.

"Oh, then I guess we could just go back," Conor retorted, his voice a little too loud. "Like, seriously, what are we supposed to be checking for, dude? We are literally in a jungle! And all I see are trees and a whole bunch of trees."

They had been given a field task for the first time after their graduation, and while Conor had initially been excited, he was now regretting it.

He'd imagined they might be assigned a special mission, like the agents he saw on TV, but here he was, scouting a forest. What use could that possibly be?

"And here I was, wanting a little bit of action like James Bond," he thought to himself, vividly imagining himself performing cool stunts and then partying with ladies at the end.

"Oh, come on, don't tell me you were expecting them to send us on a dangerous mission without a superior," Hans chided, trying to inject some motivation into Conor so he would stop lamenting and focus on the task at hand.

"And again, you have to be grateful the mission isn't even complicated. The faster we scout the area, the sooner we're gone."
