Chapter 42 — "Storm and Steel"
(Act 2 — Panam Route, continued)
The campfire's glow flickered across Panam's face as the storm's rumble softened to a distant growl.
Alaric leaned close, breath warm on her neck.
"You know," he murmured, "there's something about you — fierce, untamed."
Panam's eyes sparkled, challenging.
"You trying to flatter me, or are you just being honest?"
He traced a finger down her arm, deliberate, slow.
"Both. Honest, definitely."
Her lips curved in a half-smile.
"Good. Because I don't do half-measures."
With a swift motion, Panam grabbed his collar and pulled him in. Their lips met in a hard, hungry kiss — electric sparks flying between them.
Alaric's hands roamed, one sliding lower to cup the curve of her hip, fingers digging in just enough to elicit a soft moan.
"You're playing a dangerous game," she breathed against his mouth.
"Danger's my middle name," he shot back with a grin.
They broke apart just enough to lock eyes.
"Show me," she dared.
He responded by pulling her even closer, heat pressing between them like a storm waiting to break.
Outside, the rain eased, but inside, the fire wasn't the only thing burning.
