Chapter 470 - Chapter 470: Hydra Dark Avengers

Sakaar, Zombie Universe

Post-Cure

The devastated planet hadn't yet healed from decades of abuse and neglect, but life was already beginning to reassert itself. Green shoots pushed through cracked earth. Microorganisms multiplied in the newly purified water. The fundamental building blocks of an ecosystem, thought lost forever, stirred with renewed purpose.

As the torrential rain that had swept across the entire universe finally subsided, every being infected by the zombie virus found themselves restored. Consciousness returned like waking from a nightmare that had lasted years. Across countless worlds, people looked at their hands—whole, healthy, alive—and wept.

On Sakaar itself, the native inhabitants heard something they'd thought lost to legend. The Thunder of Sakaar, that mythical sound spoken of in their oldest stories, rolled across the sky like the voice of creation itself. As one, they bowed their heads and chanted the name of their savior, their king.

In any universe, across any timeline, Ben Parker would be the great faith of Sakaar's people.

"So this is what the original Sakaar looked like?" Peter Parker's voice carried wonder as he surveyed the landscape.

This was the first time any of them had seen the genuine article, the planet as it had existed before corruption and conquest. It was difficult to reconcile this recovering world with the images they'd built in their minds.

"Ben?"

When someone called that name, Ben Parker turned automatically, only to realize the speaker wasn't addressing him.

Gwen Tennyson was running across the muddy ground, her boots splashing through puddles of clean rainwater, throwing herself at the prone form of her cousin. She collapsed beside Benzarro's body, hands hovering over him as though afraid touching him might make him disappear.

"He's fine now." Ben Parker hadn't deactivated his Alien X transformation, his cosmic form still radiating that unsettling mixture of void and starlight. "The new flesh and blood will regenerate quickly. I've also purged the torment plague from his system. The only issue is that his body stopped aging when he became infected. Physically, he's still about ten years old."

"As long as his mind is intact, nothing else matters." Gwen wiped tears from her face with the back of her hand, her voice thick with emotion. She muttered something else, probably complaints about her cousin's recklessness, but the overwhelming relief in her expression made the words meaningless.

"Thank you, Ben." This time she was definitely addressing him.

"You're welcome." Ben's mismatched Alien X eyes held something that might have been warmth. "We both possess the Omnitrix. We're both protecting civilization's flame, just using different methods to accomplish the same goal."

Ben Tennyson's method had been destruction, the surgical removal of infected tissue to prevent the disease from spreading.

"You should thank Dr. Animo and Tony Stark more than me," Ben continued. "They're the ones who invented the cure. I just... distributed it."

Gwen looked between Ben Parker and her recovering cousin, her expression thoughtful. "Your name is so similar to his, but your personalities couldn't be more different. That idiot down there is rude, arrogant, doesn't think before he acts. Charges in like a bull seeing red."

She gestured at Ben Parker. "But you're polite. Methodical. And everyone..." Her gaze swept across Peter, Harry, Pietro, all the heroes gathered around them. "Everyone trusts you completely."

"Are you talking trash about me?" The voice was weak but unmistakably alive. Ben Tennyson's eyes had opened—actually opened, not the dead stare of the infected—and he was looking up at his cousin with something between irritation and affection.

His physical condition was still terrible, regenerating tissue visible through gaps in dissolving necrotic flesh. The process was disturbing enough that reality itself seemed to blur the worst details.

"So what if I am?" Gwen's smile was radiant despite her tears. "I'm the older cousin now! You're going to listen to your big sister from now on!"

"Get lost, you bookworm."

"You're calling ME a bookworm, you muscle-headed moron?"

They launched into an argument that would have seemed bitter to any outsider. Voices raised, insults flying, neither willing to give ground. But anyone watching could see the truth beneath the surface.

This was how they showed love.

"I'm sorry." Ben Tennyson's voice dropped, losing its combative edge. "About Grandpa. I'm so sorry, Gwen."

"It's not your fault." She squeezed his hand—carefully, mindful of the regenerating tissue. "You did what you had to do. You stopped the plague from spreading beyond our universe. Grandpa would have understood that. Would have been proud of the choice you made."

"Your original universe has been destroyed." Ben Parker's interjection was gentle but direct. "What are your plans now?"

Dr. Animo stepped forward, answering the unspoken question directed at him as well. His gaunt face carried a smile that looked strange after years of surviving in apocalyptic conditions.

"I've decided to remain in this universe. Your Peter mentioned something about a 'Jurassic Island' that used to exist on Earth. Even though the planet was destroyed, the prehistoric creatures on that island should have been transported to Sakaar along with everything else." His eyes gleamed with scientific fervor. "I'm going to find them. Study them. Perhaps even help them thrive."

"Then I guess we're staying too." Ben Tennyson's declaration surprised no one.

"This universe spent so long in chaos. Now that it's recovering, there's going to be upheaval. Power vacuums, territorial disputes, people trying to seize control." He managed to sit up, his regenerating body already showing remarkable progress. "I originally came here to destroy this world. The least I can do now is stay and help rebuild it. Make amends."

Typical hero mentality. Break it, buy it.

Ben Parker had only been asking out of idle curiosity. He didn't particularly care where Ben Tennyson and his companions ended up, as long as they didn't cause problems for his universe.

"In that case, we should return home."

He gestured to his own team, and they gathered close. Peter moved with obvious relief, clearly eager to leave this place behind. The Old Sakaar reeked of decay and filth, garbage and sewage creating a stench that rivaled medieval Paris at its worst.

"The Earth in this universe should already be destroyed by now, right?" Peter's question was careful, aware of the temporal complexities involved.

"Yes. The antimatter bomb detonated approximately four minutes ago. We can't return to that spatial location." Ben raised one hand, reality responding to his gesture. "So we'll teleport directly. Everyone stay close."

He snapped his fingers.

The team vanished, leaving behind only the faint afterimage of starlight.

Ben Tennyson, Gwen, and Dr. Animo stood in silence for a long moment, processing their new reality.

Finally, Dr. Animo adjusted his goggles with a theatrical flourish, mounted his mutated Bullfrog with practiced ease, and turned back to address the cousins.

"I'm departing as well, Benjamin and Gwendolyn." His formal tone carried genuine warmth. "I sincerely hope we'll have the opportunity to meet again under better circumstances. Perhaps even compare notes on our respective research. Farewell."

"Goodbye," they chorused, watching him ride off toward the horizon.

Then Gwen punched her cousin in the shoulder. Hard.

"Ow! What was that for?!"

"For making me think you were gone forever, you idiot."

Hydra Universe

Hydra Mothership, High Orbit

"A world has been destroyed."

Steve Rogers stood before the full Hydra Cabinet, his posture military-perfect despite the weight of their scrutiny. Around the war table, the seven most powerful figures in this fascist empire listened to their intelligence reports with varying expressions of concern and calculation.

Arnim Zola's computerized face flickered on its monitor, lines of code scrolling across the edges as his consciousness processed data in real-time. "A few minutes ago, my systems detected a massive annihilation-matter energy signature. We traced it to its source and observed the complete destruction of a planet."

His synthesized voice carried accusation. "Those people weren't bluffing. They genuinely possess the capability to destroy our Earth."

Dr. Zola's mechanical gaze fixed on Steve with uncomfortable intensity. "We need to act immediately! Time is running out. We must collect all the Cosmic Cube fragments NOW, before—"

"That's exactly right!" Johann Faustus, the Marquis of Death, slammed his fist on the table. His aristocratic features twisted with contempt. "Your cowardice has become an embarrassment to Hydra! If you lack the stomach to eliminate those traitorous heroes, then abdicate! Step aside for someone with actual spine!"

"Zola! Faustus!" Elisa Sinclair, Madame Hydra's voice cracked like a whip "What exactly do you think you're doing?"

Ophelia Sarkissian, the Viper, leaned forward with predatory grace. "Steve will make his decision. Are you openly defying the chain of command?"

"We simply believe his 'kindness' is a liability." Zola's tone dripped with disdain. "Less than six hours remain until potential annihilation, yet one Cube fragment remains in the hands of those insects, and we don't even have confirmed intelligence on their base location! Whose fault is that?"

His digital eyes burned with cold fire. "None of this would have happened without his weakness!"

The tension in the room was suffocating. Every cabinet member's attention focused on Steve Rogers, waiting to see if their supreme leader would crack under the pressure.

Steve's recent performance had sparked whispers of mutiny. Even Madame Hydra, his most loyal supporter, was beginning to question whether sentiment was clouding his judgment. If he showed any more hesitation, even the Viper and Hive might start considering alternative leadership.

Steve understood the precarious nature of his position. Without Baron Zemo—dead and gone—the only person who would support him unconditionally was Madame Hydra. One ally against six potential enemies.

And they were right about one thing: time was running out.

"Your concerns are noted but unnecessary." Steve's voice cut through the murmurs, commanding and cold. "Everything is proceeding according to plan."

Zola's screen flickered with what might have been surprise. "You're saying... you already know their location?"

"How else do you think our forces consistently acquired Cube fragments before theirs?" Steve's smile was sharp as a knife. "Did you really believe that was coincidence?"

He clenched his fist, the gesture carrying finality. "I have a deep-cover asset among them. Someone they trust completely."

The revelation sent shockwaves through the cabinet. Herr Kleiser leaned back with grudging respect. Even Faustus's contemptuous expression shifted toward something approaching approval.

"Mobilize the Hydra Assault Squadron." Steve's voice dropped to a hoarse growl, the sound of a predator preparing to strike. "We're bombing Las Vegas. Reducing their base to rubble. Crushing their resistance completely."

He stood, his hand coming down on the table with a sound like a gunshot.

"This time I'm leading the assault personally."

His eyes swept across the cabinet, daring anyone to question him now.

"Dark Avengers, assemble!"

The words were a dark mirror of a heroic battle cry, twisted into something monstrous.

Las Vegas Resistance Base

The atmosphere in the underground bunker stood in stark contrast to Hydra's renewed confidence.

Unlike the high morale aboard the enemy mothership, the resistance fighters moved with the exhausted determination of people who'd been losing ground for too long.

Operation after operation to retrieve Cube fragments had been thwarted. They'd fought hard, bled for every inch, and watched their victories turn to ash as Hydra somehow stayed one step ahead.

Morale wasn't just low. It was approaching critical failure.

And somewhere above them, hidden in the clouds, an armada prepared to descend.
