Chapter 2 - The Cyborg Girl

"A Junker?" She manages to say weakly.

I'm not sure what she remembers or not since I thought the memory core was fried but it turned out to be functional. A working cyborg is a rare find for anyone out here since they stopped working with them awhile ago.

"I take whatever I can find and sell it if it's worth anything. Or maybe it's better to say that fixing it could fetch a better price sometimes." I explain briefly.

Her arms and legs were scratched up, marked with damage from whatever monsters she fought last. It's interesting to see one that actually fought against the monsters in the world.

They were considered rare since a lot of them couldn't handle high ranking monsters. That's exactly why guilds became the primary combat force since the government couldn't handle it anymore.

The hunters guild is only 1 out of like 8 different guilds. One of them's based in Elyndra… I can't remember its name, but they practically run the place

"Were you going to fix and sell me too?" She asks with sadness in her voice.

Even with her voice box not fully cooperating with her yet, I can hear the sadness in her voice. Something I didn't think they had... Emotions.

I guess they are a lot different from some of the mindless machines I've heard about after all.

"Money for someone like me is kind of hard to come by." I respond calmly.

Cash and coins were always the way until the world fell apart, now we exchange silvite which is the main currency used throughout the cities.

It became the main currency after the flow of cash stopped, it couldn't be made anymore so we needed a new substitute for it. Silvite was discovered by that guild up in Elyndra and they made it the main currency within a matter of weeks.

"What year is it? How long was I out?" She begins to ask with a bit of panic in her voice.

I'd panic too. Hell, I'm barely functional myself. I'll probably have to explain some stuff to her since she was out for god knows how long.

"It's currently the year 2108 and I don't know how long you were out." I answer while keeping my calm tone.

To think it's been that long since the collapse happened... Since Minami passed away. I'm surprised I even know the current year with how distracted I am usually.

I try not to pay attention to everything that's happening unless it's something dire. Monsters tend to be the biggest concern for me to worry about... Except for money of course.

Luckily Ashvalis is frequently visited by hunters so it's not constantly flooded by monsters.

"It's really been 12 years... I can't believe it." She says with disbelief.

By the sound of her response it seems she was probably around at the beginning of everything. It can't be easy waking up 12 years after everything happened.

But Far off, someone was walking. Several someones. I froze, instinct kicking in. You learn not to trust movement like that. My thoughts were completely interrupted by whoever is out there now.

"You can't move much, can you?" I say with a bit of an irritated tone.

I'm not really equipped for much of a fight so I'll have to play this cautiously in case they are enemies. I don't know a whole lot about fighting since I've avoided it most of my life but I can wing it.

"Is there a problem...?" She asks weakly while trying to stand up.

"Don't bother standing, your limbs aren't really functional yet." I respond while ignoring her question.

Peaking out I can see a couple of people in the distance but they mostly look like hunters to me. Luckily my lights are off outside and you can't really see inside without getting real close to the building.

Not that I have any reason to keep them away from the shop, I just know how they are with talentless garbage like me. It's always the same old story when they come up to me... I don't care for it anymore.

Eventually they pass by and continue with whatever quest the damn hunters guild gave them. At least I know that won't be a problem for me anytime soon.

"I won't sell you since you seem to have a consciousness, something I didn't expect." I say while scratching my head.

Seems like it's best to focus on fixing her up for the time being since I've wasted enough time the way it is.

"I appreciate that..." She pauses after replying since she doesn't know his name.

"Right, I'm Rokuro. Do you know your name?" I question after introducing myself.

Did they even give cyborgs names when they were just used to fight against the monsters at the start of everything? I guess they are a lot more human than some sort of android.

"I can't really recall a name for myself..." She answers with a bit of embarrassment evident on her face.

"Do you recall anything from your past?" I ask with a bit of curiosity.

"No." She says softly as she looks down towards the floor.

It seems I'll have to give her a name for the time being until she can remember her own name. I didn't intend to keep a cyborg originally but I wouldn't want to dump her out there with a bunch of monsters.

Most of them would shred her in a matter of seconds. Something has to be special about her though, right? She's the first functioning cyborg I've seen in the last 6 years. I saw some before it got worse but they didn't last against the A ranked monsters.

"Ghost. You can't remember anything and you were basically on the cusp of death so you'll be ghost for the time being." I speak with a calmness back in my voice.

I hate having to worry about someone or something again but it would help me with getting some projects done. Not like I can really do a whole lot out there.
