Chapter 20 - Chapter 20 : alpha and beta

I'm one of the First Division — a spy operating deep within the demon kingdom. My partners, Xeroth and Xavien, specialize in brutal hand-to-hand combat, using their deadly tentacles to rip through anyone foolish enough to stand in their way.

When it comes to missions, I act as the infiltrator — a silent ghost slipping through enemy lines. In the human kingdom, I erase all traces of my demon mana by channeling it into Beta. Once it's sealed, I walk among them like a free-living lad, smiling, blending in... executing every objective.

But today, something unexpected happened.

> "Alpha," a soldier said, voice sharp. "Squad Leader Alpha — the Imperial wants to speak with you."

I raised an eyebrow. What could he possibly want now?

Inside the demon palace — which, unlike human kingdoms, sits boldly in front of the entire capital, with nobles ready to die before any citizen — I knelt respectfully.

> "Your Highness. You summoned me?"

The Demon Imperial looked down from his obsidian throne and spoke with eerie calm.

> "There is a vampire waiting at the palace gate. He claims he came to speak with you. Will you hear him?"

I stood slowly.

> "As you wish, my lord."

The gates opened. I stepped outside into the cold shadow of dusk. It was quiet. Still.

And then… a dense blood fog swirled in the air.

From it stepped a cloaked figure. His presence reeked of ancient power.

> "So… you're the infamous Killer Alpha," he said, grinning beneath crimson eyes. "I've wanted to meet you personally."

Without warning, he lunged — a spear of condensed blood shooting from his hand. I sidestepped.

> "You here to talk, or to die? Say what you came to say and get the hell out of my kingdom."

He chuckled, amused by my aggression.

> "I suppose there's no forcing you. Even if I tried, I wouldn't get out of here alive, would I? You demons would fry me in the sun before I got five steps."

> "Stop creating scenarios," I snapped. "Talk."

He nodded.

> "May I speak to the Imperial directly?"

> "He can hear you from here."

> "No," he said with a smirk. "I want to look him in the eye."

The Demon Imperial's voice echoed from behind me.

> "Let him in."

So I did — not through the front gate, but through the balcony. Just like I did… the first time I ever entered this palace.

Once inside, the Imperial gestured.

> "Sit. Both of you."

> "I'll excuse myself, then—"

> "No," he interrupted. "You'll stay. I want all divisions present for this."

A large table was set. Other members of the Twelve Demon Divisions arrived and took their seats.

Then the vampire revealed his identity.

It was Beta.

Our planned operation was in motion.

He began speaking.

> "We're here to discuss the growing tension. The Demon Imperial of the Third Realm has been using serpent demons to invade vampire lands. He's seizing energy lines, altering the ley routes — and it's already affecting our economy and territory."

> "We're not here to start a war… but we will end one."

The room went quiet.

And just like that… the spy and the vampires were now allies.

And the worst part is—they have now started killing our citizens. Not in war, not in self-defense—but for their own satisfaction.

They're draining our kind—vampires—for blood.

Our blood is unique, full of energy, and extremely potent in producing demonic potions.

They've even built an entire industry around it.

But not for long.

Our goal is not just to burn it to ashes—but to erase its very existence.

Then our Imperial leaned back and asked,

> "You're planning something big. But how does that benefit me?"

Beta responded smoothly,

> "You'll be promoted from 4th to 3rd Division and stay seated right here. We just need you to help with one thing: trick them into cooperation. Promise an alliance… and then check their inner structure. We only need one thing—a file. A list of their workers. Once we have it, we eliminate them. All of them. So there's no chance they can rebuild."

Our Imperial smirked and said,

> "Sounds ruthless… and effective. We'll take everything. All their files, their power sources. I'll use a time-bound curse killer on each of them. Alpha, your skills with curse weaving are legendary—you'll handle that."

Then I said,

> "We've studied their lifestyle. Their food comes from a highly trusted supplier who delivers it directly to the industry—not made there, because even the smell of spilled blood fog causes chaos. So, here's the plan—we infect the food supply halfway through delivery, just enough to make them sick, but let some survive. Only the high-caliber ones will endure. That will make their Imperal suspect there's a traitor among them. We won't need to touch a single one. They'll tear themselves apart from the inside."

Beta grinned,

> "Perfect. Absolutely perfect. This kid's a genius."

The Imperal nodded,

> "That's my boy."

Then Beta asked,

> "How are we going to get the original information without alerting them?"

I said,

> "We don't steal it. We replace it. Make them think a traitor did it. But here's the twist—it can't be you. It can't be us. So, we blame a third party. A fake kingdom with spies already planted. Or… better yet, we create that third party."

Beta added,

> "Even if no third party exists, we can make one. Nothing is impossible. I'll head to another kingdom and negotiate."

The rest of the division stayed quiet.

Not that smart, clearly.

The next day, Beta moved to another Demon Imperial—the 1st, a known strategist.

She's clever, calculated. She never signs a deal she doesn't win.

But she already suspected our visit, and said:

> "Let him in."

Just like with Alpha's Imperial, we had a table meeting.

To be honest, I've never seen someone so terrifying and beautiful in the Demon Lands.

She reminded me of Sayaka's dark elf bloodline—maybe her descendant, 4000 years later.

We spoke directly. I told her everything.

She stood up and said:

> "I won't support you from the sidelines.

I'll join you in the frontlines.

On one condition…

Spend the night with me."

I froze. "W-what, Your Majesty?!"

She laughed.

> "You're cute. But seriously—next time, bring your King. This deal needs his word."

I nodded, slightly embarrassed, and made my exit.

Once I returned, I reported everything.

> "We now have a traitor inside the industry. Everything's in place."

Alpha crossed his arms

and said with a grin:

> "Perfect."

Me and Beta—we stood out from the rest.

The following week, Alpha and the Vice Imperial made a formal visit to the demon industry compound.

As they walked through the halls, Alpha casually asked,

> "Where's the restroom?"

With permission, he headed in—but this wasn't just a bathroom break.

He was being watched.

He knew.

That's when Alpha activated his demonic tentacles, wrapping himself in a cloak of dense shadow and corruption—his demonic aura spiking sharply.

Within that cover, he swapped places with Delta.

Now it was Delta inside.

He silently teleported to the main file room, located the industry's classified storage, touched the original files, and then teleported back to the restroom.

Once there, he swapped back with Alpha, and handed him the decoy version.

> "I swapped the real files with the fake one," Delta whispered.

Alpha smirked and stepped out—mission complete.

Now it was time for Phase Two:

Poison the food supply.

They discovered that the industry's food was transferred underground through an automated, unguarded system.

Perfect for infiltration.

That's where Sigma came in.

Sigma activated a forbidden technique:

> "Downsizing: Micro Core Mode."

His body shrunk rapidly, to the size of a dust particle.

He stepped onto a small drop of vampiric demon blood, and Delta teleported that drop into the food pipeline, swapping it with an unguarded decoy sample from a nearby blood bank.

The operation was flawless.

Just a single drop was enough.

The poison would activate in one week.

It would rot the body from the inside.

Untraceable.

Unpredictable.

They got out clean.

Later that day, the First Ranked Demon Imperial—nicknamed "The Dark" by his enemies—called them in for celebration.

Delta even invited the Vampire King, who joined them discreetly.

They celebrated quietly, laughing, drinking, and enjoying the sweet taste of victory.

The Imperal clinked his glass and said:

> "Don't tell my wife. She thinks I've been behaving lately."

Everyone laughed.

Even the Vampire King—usually quiet—grinned and said,

> "You devils never change."

They shared food, toasted to war, and talked politics like old allies.

It was peaceful... for now.

---

A few days later, the Twelve Demon Imperials held a private council meeting.

Though it appeared like nothing significant happened, word spread:

The Third Imperial had lost critical information, and many key workers had disappeared.

Everything they had worked for—the files, the trust, the industry—had crumbled in silence.

And no one had any proof who did it.

Not even a trace.

The pieces had already been moved.

The trap was already set.

The war was already brewing in shadows.

Now, all that remained was for the rest of the world to catch up

The grand hall was prepared long before the meeting.

Each of the Twelve Demon Imperials brought two companions:

Their right hand

Their left hand, also known as the Vice-Imperial.

Beta arrived with his Imperal and the Vice-Imperial of the Fourth Division. They entered the stone-carved, dark-lit hall, laughing quietly to themselves, wearing confident smirks. They didn't say a word—just found their seats and waited.

I walked in with my Imperal, and his Vice-Imperial beside us. We sat on the opposite side of the hall.

Across from us sat the Third Imperal, watching us with pure hatred in his eyes.

The Council of Twelve began.

The one leading the meeting was the First Ranked Demon Imperal, the one we had negotiated with just days ago. She stood tall and composed, her voice echoing through the chamber.

> "What is the cause of this sudden disruption?" she asked calmly.

One by one, the Imperals discussed the recent events—especially what happened to the Third Division's industry.

Then she asked:

> "Who votes for the Vampire Kingdom to win this war?"

Without hesitation, she raised her hand.

Then the Sixth Rank, the Seventh, and even the Second Ranked Demon raised their hands in agreement.

We, the Fourth Division, followed suit.

But the Third Imperal—furious and humiliated—stood and blamed us outright.

> "Everything that happened occurred right after the Fourth Division left our facility. This all started the very next day!"

His accusations were desperate and loud, but everyone could see through them. He had no proof.

And worst of all—it had already been a full week since our visit. The timing was far too convenient.

The First Imperal narrowed her eyes and replied:

> "Let's not waste time with baseless blame. We're here to settle something real: the war."

She proposed the next course of action.

> "The war will continue—but it shall be a controlled war. Friendly, in name only. You may kill each other, but no civilians will be involved. And we will find a neutral ground—where the vampires won't be exposed to sunlight."

The Third Imperal immediately agreed.

But that's exactly what we wanted.

See, I had already told her to name a location where the sun shines the brightest, and where clouds can be manipulated for cover.

The trap was set.

And like a fool, the Third Imperal paid her for this location—a bribe.

That gold?

We took it.

Fair and square.

And now?

Now we leave the room looking like we're on the losing side—with no army, no ground, and no allies.

But what they don't know is that this was the plan all along.

We move like shadows.

We twist the board from underneath.

We play games no one sees coming.

I'm not just Delta.

I'm not just Ebisu.

I'm Kurai Adegaki.

The Destiny Breaker.

This war won't end history.

I will rewrite it.

Then whatever happens, I'm not gonna lose.

The reason I'm here is simple—to find Alistair, and kick his ass.

That's the reason I stayed.

But… is it worth it?

Everyone has a reason for doing what they do.

But I didn't die.

No one I care about is dead… not yet.

Maybe I'm just being selfish.

Still, no one deserves to be treated like we were.

Dragged into mana draining, used like tools, discarded like trash.

So many nobles... most of them murdered.

Now thanks to Alpha, it's our turn to push back.

But is it good to let him die?

We all know the truth:

If I return to being Kurai, I'll be ambushed.

Everyone I care about—Sayaka, Zephyr, even Layla—they'll be tortured to death just to get to me.

The nobles already warned everyone not to speak about it.

And now they use that silence to play propaganda and politics—none of it means anything anymore.

If I reveal myself, they'll do whatever it takes to hunt me down.

Because Alpha is now one of the most wanted serial killers in all the kingdoms.

So yeah… if I become Kurai again, I might finally get what I want.

But I'll have to live hiding. Running. Chased by everyone.

What should I call this?

Freedom in disguise?

Or…

Freedom of the real self?
