Chapter 1 - Chapter 1: The Stranger in the Suit

The alarm buzzed at 6:15 a.m.

Elena Hart groaned as she rolled over on the threadbare mattress, silencing it with a shaky hand. The room was dim, lit only by the first blush of sunlight slipping through the thin curtains. Her back ached from another night of restless sleep, and her feet already throbbed from the thought of another shift at Vantage Heights Hotel.

She sat up slowly, careful not to wake her younger sister, Lily, who was curled up under a blanket in the corner. Elena's eyes drifted to the cracked ceiling, her heart heavy.

"Just one more day," she whispered to herself. "One more step closer to something better."

The apartment was small—barely enough for one, let alone two—but it was all they had. Elena shuffled to the sink and splashed cold water on her face. No time for breakfast. No time for dreams.

She pulled on her neatly ironed but faded uniform and slipped into her worn shoes, wincing as the soles pressed against yesterday's bruises. Every step hurt. But she couldn't stop. Not today. Not ever.

By the time Elena arrived at Vantage Heights, her feet were already sore, and she hadn't even started her shift.

She clocked in two minutes late.

Again.

"Miss Hart," came the sharp voice of her manager the moment she stepped behind the front desk. "What time does your shift start?"

Elena bit the inside of her cheek and lowered her eyes. "Seven-thirty, ma'am."

"And what time is it now?"

"Seven thirty-two."

The manager clicked her tongue. "This is the third time this week. Do you think this is a charity?"

"No, ma'am."

"You're lucky we're short-staffed. Get to work."

"Yes, ma'am."

She headed straight to the service counter, tying her apron tighter to hide her trembling hands. The hotel was beautiful—marble floors, crystal chandeliers, glass elevators—but Elena never felt like she belonged. Not with her worn shoes and secondhand uniform.

At noon, the heat outside was unbearable. Guests swarmed the lobby, complaining about delays, demanding upgrades. Elena kept smiling, even when one man yelled in her face because his room wasn't ready.

Then, it happened.

A tray slipped from a server's hands nearby, crashing onto the polished floor. The sound echoed. Elena flinched. Her manager turned sharply, eyes blazing.

"You again?" she snapped at Elena, although she hadn't even touched the tray. "Why are you always near trouble?"

Elena opened her mouth to explain—but the manager was already walking toward her.

"You think you can keep making mistakes and get away with it?" The woman raised her hand.

Elena didn't move. She froze, breath stuck in her throat.

"Don't you dare."

The voice was low. Commanding. Male.

Everyone turned.

A man in a crisp tailored suit stood just feet away, watching the scene with cold eyes. His presence was magnetic. Powerful. The kind that made people step back without knowing why.

"I believe she didn't do anything wrong," he said smoothly, stepping closer.

The manager stammered. "I—I didn't mean—"

"You meant to humiliate a hardworking woman in front of guests?" His tone stayed calm, but sharp enough to cut glass. "I suggest you rethink how you speak to your staff."

Elena stood frozen, eyes locked on the stranger. His face was unfamiliar, but something about him felt… important.

He looked at her briefly, then turned and

walked away like nothing had happened.

But for Elena… something had changed.

She didn't know what it was yet.

But she was about to find out.
