The moment Amara heard that, she went into flight mode. Amara was thankful that she wasn't wearing her heels or anything, so immediately she tiptoed away from the door.
Although her heart was drumming fast against her chest, and her blood was pounding hard in her ears, she didn't stop until she got to the living room, and then she froze when she saw three guys sleeping in the living room. Two on the couch, and one on the floor.
'God, please help me,' Amara prayed inwardly as she looked from their sleeping forms to the door.
Her heart was still pounding as she tiptoed to the door. She had no idea how she managed to open the door noiselessly or why none of the guys who were sleeping in the living room didn't hear her, but she snuck outside.
It did not matter that she had left her sandals or that she had no idea what she was going to face outside. All she knew at that moment was that anything else was better than the fate that awaited her if those men in there laid their hands on her.
'God, please save me. If you save me, I will never do this business again,' she cried desperately in her heart as she clutched her purse to herself and stepped out.
Her heart leapt to her throat when she met the next obstacle. It was the protector gate. She was about to panic until she realised, to her relief, that it was only bolted and not padlocked.
What was she going to do now? Would the sound alert them of her escape?
She didn't want to waste too much time thinking about it since she knew time was of the essence if she was going to survive tonight. So, holding her breath, she slid off the padlock that hung on the bolt as quietly as she could muster and pulled back the bolt.
The cool night air did nothing to calm her nerves as she stepped out of the verandah barefooted, with her purse clutched tightly against her chest.
Although it was dark outside, she didn't bother to turn on her flashlight lest there were others keeping watch outside and waiting to catch anyone who dared to escape.
'God, please save me' she cried silently as she walked in quick steps, trying to find the gate.
All she could hear at first was the sound of her rapid heartbeat, and then she froze when she heard the growl of not one, but two dogs.
Jesus! Jesus ooo!
From the sound she could hear, she could tell those were not local dogs, and they were definitely not puppies.
'Ahhh! God of Daniel! The God that shut the mouth of the lions in the lion's den, please save me,' she cried desperately as she remained where she stood since she had no idea where the dogs were.
Since everywhere was dark outside save for the moon, and she wasn't familiar with the environment, the last thing she wanted was to run into them while trying to run away from them. Neither did she want them to start barking and attract attention her way.
She tried to adjust her eyes to the darkness as she looked all around her so she would know which way to go.
She wasn't sure what sort of building it was and if the men had neighbours, but she knew it was a fenced compound, so her gaze moved to the fence.
She wasn't a newcomer to scaling fences. Although this one seemed a bit high, she did not doubt that with the amount of adrenaline pumping through her blood, she could climb it if she put her mind to it.
The only problem was that she had no idea what was on the other side of the fence.
Well, it didn't matter. Whatever was there would be far better than what was awaiting her inside the house, so the moment she heard movements behind her inside the house, she flung her purse over the fence and ran for the wall.
The dogs began to bark at once, and they raced in her direction. This only caused a surge in the adrenaline pumping through her, and before she knew it, she had jumped over and was on the other side of the fence panting hard.
She heard the voices of the men as they argued amongst themselves as they came out, and immediately she looked around for her purse and snatched it up before she began to run.
She knew that even though the men had not seen her scaling the fence, the dogs would probably be standing right there barking at the fence and letting them know how she had escaped.
Her heart was pounding fast as she looked around to see where she was so she would know which direction to go or see if there was anywhere to hide.
It seemed like the building she had run out from was the only house around that side of the fence. She was still trying to take in her environment when she heard a loud thud that sounded as though someone had just jumped over the fence in pursuit of her.
Immediately, she started running mindlessly while praying that whatever it was that had woken her from the sleep of death would lead her in the right direction and save her life.
She had no idea how far she had run or how long she had been running, but she soon realised that she was out of that area and was running by the roadside now.
She looked behind her briefly, and even though she believed deep down that she had lost her pursuers, she didn't stop running. She couldn't stop. Not until she got to safety, wherever that was.
Hope came alive in her when she heard a sound in the distance. It seemed like a church was having a vigil nearby.
She had never liked vigils, and she couldn't exactly remember the last time she walked into a church, but hearing the sound now, she felt like she had found her safe place.
Quickening her pace, she ran even faster until she located where the sound was coming from, and once she got to the front of the church building, her legs gave way under her, and she collapsed in relief.
She was safe now. There was no way those men were going to come here to capture her. It didn't matter that she was not appropriately dressed or even worthy of being anywhere around a church building.
She was safe, and that was all that mattered, she thought as she broke into a sob that shook her entire body.
