Chapter 14 - Pact of the Undying Flame

The cavern pulsed with heat, alive with a heartbeat that wasn't his own. The air shimmered, waves of invisible force beating against Lucien's skin like invisible lashes. He stood at the edge of a crater, deep beneath the ruins of Hollowspire, where a broken portal had swallowed him during the chaos of the last trial.

But what he found down here wasn't death.

It was something ancient. Something alive.

Before him, encased in molten obsidian, was a being bound in fire—a dragon-shaped silhouette made entirely of flickering crimson flames. It radiated power that twisted the very laws of the world around it. Its presence burned the air, bent space, and made the shadows cower. It wasn't just heat—it was life, fury, and eternity all wrapped into one.

Lucien stared, chest rising and falling as if instinct itself was telling him to run. But he didn't.

"I know who you are," Lucien said, his voice steady, even if sweat soaked his back. "You are the Undying Flame… the eternal soul of fire magic."

The entity's eyes flared open, two golden infernos locked within fire. Its voice came not through sound but through thought, deep and echoing.

"You bear the mark of the Shadowbrand," it said. "And yet, you walk into my tomb willingly. Explain."

Lucien grinned, despite the heat blistering his skin. "Because I don't fear fire. I am ready to burn with it."

A moment of silence stretched like eternity. The Undying Flame stirred. Lava flowed around its prison, cracking rock and making the floor tremble. With a roar, it shattered the obsidian walls and burst forward.

Flames flooded the cavern.

Lucien raised his arm, but he wasn't screaming.

He was laughing.

"Show me what you've got!" he shouted.

The dragon of fire collided with him—not to kill, but to test. Pain erupted through Lucien's body. His flesh burned, bones sizzled, and his mind screamed. The flames weren't just physical—they entered his soul, scouring it, searching for weakness.

Memories rushed back—his betrayal, his death, the coldness of that final moment. And then came the future he had seen—the throne of shadows, the war of realms, the rise of dragons, and his name whispered in both fear and awe.

"I will not break," Lucien said through gritted teeth.

A sudden calm spread through the fire. The Undying Flame paused.

"You were forged in betrayal," it said. "Cursed with memory. Burdened with ambition. You are not like others."

Lucien knelt, fire still licking his skin, his body refusing to fall. "Then let's make a deal. Your strength. My will. Together."

There was a silence that felt like a heartbeat in the universe.

Then the fire spoke once more, softer now. "Very well, Lucien Vale. From this moment on, our souls are bound. You are the bearer of the Pact of the Undying Flame."

A searing brand burned itself across Lucien's chest—an ancient symbol shaped like a spiraling flame coiling into a dragon's eye. It burned for a moment… then sank into his skin.

The pain vanished.

Lucien stood, breathless but grinning.

Flames now danced across his fingers without hurting him. He could feel them responding to his thoughts, as if a part of him had been awakened—something primal, something eternal. His fire magic, once theoretical and raw, was now alive, infused with intelligence and purpose.

More than that… it was hungry.

Lucien turned to the cavern's edge. The portal shimmered again repairing itself, reacting to the power surge.

But before stepping through, Lucien looked back at the spot where the Undying Flame had been. It had vanished into him, sleeping, waiting.

A new voice whispered in his mind, deep and ancient.

"Feed me power. Burn away limits. Become more."

Lucien smirked. "Don't worry. I plan to."

He stepped through the portal, and the world shifted once again.

Back in Hollowspire Academy, the trials were still ongoing. Students whispered about the boy who had fallen into the earth, presumed dead. Professors spoke in hushed tones about sudden fluctuations in mana. A few guardians felt the tremble beneath the academy and shivered, though they couldn't explain why.

But deep within the archives, the ancient flame crystal shattered silently—its magic released, its guardian awakened.

And far above, the stars shifted ever so slightly, sensing the change.

The one who would burn the sky had returned.
