Chapter 2 - 2. Unlucky Luckly : A wish

"Well, I guess you're not that lucky after all, Miss Jang Mi!"

"Well, I guess you're not that lucky after all, Miss Jang Mi!"

"Well, I guess you're not that lucky after all, Miss Jang Mi!"

Those words haunted Jang Mi all day. She couldn't sleep, unable to believe what she had witnessed. Did she lose her luck? It was all because of him, Lee Hoo. After that incident, no one on the team believed her anymore. They made fun of her, sarcastically calling her "our lucky intern" all day and making jokes about it. "If you're that lucky, why aren't you rich? You should have won the lottery a long time ago. Why are you working your ass off like the rest of us?"

In reality, when she was younger, her mother took her to a shaman. The shaman looked her in the eye and told her mother that her daughter was very lucky. She would live a comfortable life, but only if she appreciated her gift. The shaman warned her not to try to get rich by winning the lottery and never to question her luck, otherwise, she would suffer later.

Jang Mi took those words seriously. She never tried to buy a lottery ticket, even after her father begged her to. She was always afraid that the shaman's words would come true.

After her first day at work, she couldn't stop thinking about what happened in the elevator and losing against her manager. It was all so strange. How could it happen? Was it even possible? Did she lose her luck? She ran to the nearest store and bought an ice cream, scared that she wouldn't win one for free. She was too afraid to check at first, but after a moment, she revealed the stick. Yes! She won one for free! She still had it! So why did she lose earlier? It was all so weird.

She met Seo-ah later that night and talked about her day. Seo-ah was surprised by the incident; she had known Jang Mi for seven years now and had never seen anything like that happen to her, except when Jang Mi liked someone or went on a date. Seo-ah thought maybe that was the reason for the strange occurrences. "Perhaps you just liked him," Seo-ah said. Jang Mi remembered how she was amused by his smell and his looks. That explained it all. She might have liked him, and that's why those things happened. It made sense. "I should just stop liking him, and then everything would be fine, right? A romance in the workplace isn't a good idea anyway," Jang Mi said.

Seo-ah suggested another blind date to resolve the problem, and Jang Mi agreed without hesitation,"I am only an intern, and having a crush in the workspace might hurt my career. I will end up with neither a love life nor a work life," Jang Mi said.

The next day, on her way home, Jang Mi kept thinking about what happened on her first day. Was it really because she liked him? He was handsome, but she didn't think she liked him from the first sight; that's absurd. Maybe it was because of the smell of his shampoo. She had smelled it before, but she couldn't recall from where. Well, all she needed now was to stop liking him so that she could regain her luck again!

She bought coffee for her team, knowing that offering free drinks was the best way to gain their favor. She purchased a variety of coffee and tea, considering it a small gesture to bond with her new colleagues. Surprisingly, there was no line when she went to order, which seemed normal to her. She never realized how normal people with normal luck often struggled with large orders in the morning, as waiting in line could be tiresome and time-consuming.

She hurried into the elevator, checking it first to ensure Lee Hoo wasn't nearby. Desperate to avoid him, she quickly pressed the close button. The doors began to shut, but a hand halted their movement. Before she could even see the face of the person, she recognized the familiar scent. "Oh no, not him again. Don't be him," she prayed silently.

"Are you trying to avoid your manager? That's not a good way to start your internship!" he said with a smirk on his face when he noticed her hand on the closing button of the elevator.

"I could never. It's just a misunderstanding, sir!" she replied hastily. "Here, take one—I bought coffee for everyone," she added.

He took the coffee from her and thanked her for the gesture, his mind swirling with questions though, "It wasn't a misunderstanding; she was avoiding me! But why? Could it be that she finally recognized me? Did I make her uncomfortable?"

Meanwhile, Jang Mi was preoccupied with worries about the elevator stopping again or some other disaster occurring. Something was bound to happen, that much she was sure of!

The elevator didn't stop, much to her relief. Was the bad luck gone? Was her good luck back? She smiled. Lee Hoo noticed her smile and said sarcastically, "I think we're lucky again—the elevator didn't stop this time." She didn't think much of his comment. All she could think about was that she'd escaped bad luck this time.

As she stepped out of the elevator, her leg tripped over something on the floor, and she was about to fall flat on her face. The cups of coffee flew into the air, and before she knew it, Lee Hoo grabbed her by the waist to save her from the fall. He couldn't save the drinks, though, and all the coffee cups ended up spilling on their clothes. Fortunately, it was all iced coffee.

They locked eyes for about two seconds before she got angry and started screaming, "My luck, my luck, it's all because of you!" He was surprised. "Are you angry because I saved your face? Without my help, you would have ended with a wound on your face!" he retorted. "Without you, I wouldn't have fallen in the first place!" she replied sharply, proceeding to the office with quick, angry steps.

Lee Hoo was confused. What was happening? She stopped abruptly in the middle of her walk and shouted, "You should change that shampoo! It smells good." She seemed weird to him. If it was good, why did she say to change it? Was it a compliment? And why was she angry about him grabbing her? Did she not like people touching her? But he did it to save her. Should he apologize for that? For saving her?

She entered the office, and the team started laughing and making jokes. "What happened to our lucky intern? At this rate, we should call you our unlucky intern." "You smell like coffee." "No, no, she smells like tea." "Well, she smells like something, doesn't she?" Everyone started giggling.

After that, she made sure to stay away from him whenever possible. If she saw him near the copier, she'd quickly go the other way. Even in the kitchen, if they crossed paths, she'd hurry off. He couldn't help but notice her avoiding him and thought, "She really doesn't want to be near me."

He found himself wondering, "Do I smell bad? Was she being sarcastic when she said I smell good?" He even went as far as asking one of the employees if they thought he smelled bad.

He suddenly realized, "Wait, I'm the manager and she's the intern! Why is she treating me like this? Even if I do smell, she shouldn't be avoiding her manager!"

During the team meeting that day, everyone entered the meeting room, Jang Mi chose the farthest chair from the manager. It was strange because there weren't many people, and she left five empty chairs between him and her. His furrowed eyebrows indicated that he was very angry.

Both of them were unfocused. Jang Mi kept thinking about how she could avoid him and change her luck, while he was wondering why she was avoiding him.

"Sir, are you going to grant us a wish this week too?" Amy asked, catching him off guard.

"Sure, sure," he replied awkwardly when he realized that Amy was actually talking to him.

"A wish?" Jang Mi asked, intrigued.

Amy explained to her that the person who completes the most tasks successfully during the week gets to make a wish, and the manager usually fulfills it by treating them to a meal.

"That's it! That's her chance to avoid him," Jang Mi thought. She could make a wish about changing teams, and her good luck would come back. "Does that include the interns too?" she asked.

"Yes, of course, but it's too late this week since it's already Friday," Amy answered.

"But I can still participate," Jang Mi interjected.

"Sure, you can. To win, you need to surpass Jeremy this week," Lee Hoo said.

"That would be impossible! I made sure no one surpassed me this week. I want to eat a steak, so I was motivated," Jeremy exclaimed.

As long as Lee Hoo won't be near her , she could use her luck and work all night to finish as many tasks as she could, she thought.

As soon as the meeting was over, she dashed to her desk as fast as she could. "Well, someone is motivated. I think she really wants that steak!" Amy remarked, noting Jang Mi's urgency. A curious look crossed Lee Hoo's face. "She likes steaks, huh" he thought.

Surprisingly, Jang Mi requested to change her desk to the farthest one away from Lee Hoo's office. Everyone was surprised because she already had a great spot. "Why does she want the messy desk near the exit where there is no sun and where people usually leave their unwanted docs?" they wondered. Nonetheless, they told her to do as she pleased.

She worked so hard, finishing a lot of tasks without taking any breaks. Everyone was surprised! everyone left, only she and the manager Lee Hoo remained. "You're still here?" he said, surprised. "Don't come close!!" she answered aggressively. He was surprised by her aggressive response. "I'm not a pervert, okay? I only touched you to save you from the fall!" he shouted and then walked away. He returned to add, "And I don't smell !!" leaving her speechless. "What was he talking about? Never mind, don't waste time. We need to finish the work!" she thought to herself.

She spent the night there, finishing around 11 am on the next day (Saturday). She looked like a zombie with dark under eyes, messy hair, and her clothes stained with coffee from the previous day. "I did it. I surprised Jeremy with two tasks. That should be enough!" she thought. As she exited the office, everyone looked at her. She looked like a homeless girl. "I need to go home, sleep and take a shower," she thought to herself.

As she was about to take the bus, Seo-ah called. "Where are you? Did you forget about the blind date? The man is waiting for you at the cafe. He called me asking if you're still interested in coming to the date. He is still waiting for you," Seo-ah explained.

She totally forgot about the blind date! "If you're not planning to go, you should have told me. The man is a good friend of my boyfriend. He will think badly of me if you don't go," Jang Mi replied. "I'm coming, don't worry," she assured Seo-ah.

She thought she should just go to apologize for the inconvenience, at least. It's not like the date will go well anyway . At least she knows she will get rejected by the look of her. She's hopeless. She didn't have luck with dates even in her best days. What would change now? She didn't care about her panda face and her dirty clothes. She went to the date to apologize so that she could go home and rest.

As she entered the coffee place where the blind date was supposed to be, she heard a familiar voice calling her, "Jang Mi?" "No, that smell again, it's Lee Hoo again. What is he doing here?" she whispered to herself. He looked at her from top to bottom.

"What is going on? Why do you look like that? By any chance, did you get stuck in the office?" he said. She wanted to explain, "No..." but he didn't let her finish her phrase.

"You should have called security. Why did you stay there? Are you okay?"

She sighed. "No, I didn't get stuck. I stayed there by choice to get my wish." He couldn't hide his surprised face.

"Does she like steaks that much?" he thought.

In the middle of this conversation, a manly soft voice interrupted, "Miss Jang Mi! It's me, Min-hyuk, your blind date."

Min-hyuk had a nice, sharp haircut and a smiley face that exuded warmth. He was almost the same height as Lee Hoo, emanating a friendly and approachable aura. He wore a nice white t-shirt paired with a jean jacket, giving off a casual yet stylish vibe.

"What, she's going on a blind date like that? She's really weird," Lee Hoo thought. "Well, I'll leave you to your date, Ms. Jang Mi," he said and went to his chair.

Min-hyuk led Jang Mi to the table next to Lee Hoo's table and asked, "You look tired. Are you okay? Do you need something to drink?"

Jang Mi was busy thinking about how bad this date would be since Lee Hoo was sitting so close to her. She didn't expect it to go well, but with him here, it could end even more badly than normal.

A voice woke her up from her thoughts. "Miss Jang Mi? Miss Jang Mi? Are you okay? Do you need something?"

"No, it's okay. I'm just hungry. I spent the night working, so I didn't have the chance to go home to eat and change. I'm sorry. I just came here to apologize to you. I didn't want you to think badly about Seo-ah. She worked hard to set up this date," Jang Mi said.

"Oh, I heard that you're an intern. You must be in a hard position. You can't say no to your supervisor and end up doing all the work," Min-hyuk replied.

Min-hyuk continued, "It's okay. The fact that you came to apologize means you're a good person. How about brunch instead of coffee since you didn't eat breakfast?"

"Sure," she replied, surprised.

Is she dreaming, or is this date actually going well?

He ordered a large brunch with different types of bread and sweets. "That's a lot, you shouldn't have," she remarked.

"You should eat well to gain strength during your internship," he replied.

"Actually, you remind me of myself. I was working so hard and so late during my internship, and my boss was bullying me all the time, giving me extra work. But it's all good now, and it will be for you too when you finish it. Good luck!!!"

They proceeded to keep talking about their work and their families. They had a great conversation while enjoying all the sweets that her date had bought.

"You must be really tired. I should let you go. Can I get your number to contact you later? This time when you aren't tired?" Min-hyuk asked.

"Yes, of course," she replied, surprised.

Jang Mi was left speechless by Min-hyuk's unexpected request. This was something that had never happened to her before in her lifetime. What was going on? Her whole life seemed to be changing these days. First, the bad luck, and now, the good date. She turned around in a hurry, and there he was, Lee Hoo. Since the day she met him, her life had been turned upside down. Yet, here he was, working on something on his laptop and sipping his coffee, completely relaxed. Why was he relaxed when she was on an emotional rollercoaster?

She left the coffee shop and went home, took a shower, and slept for seven hours. When she woke up in a rush, she thought it was all a dream. But then she checked her phone and saw a text from an unknown number: "I really enjoyed our blind date. Looking forward to meeting you next time to discuss more. - Min Hyuk." There were also three missed calls from Seo-ah.

When she called her back, Seo-ah was frantic. "Where did you disappear? I've been calling for ages! Why didn't you reply?"

Jang Mi replied sleepily, "I was asleep."

Seo-ah continued excitedly, "Min Hyuk called me. I think he likes you. Why else would he ask me what you like doing on weekends? He might be planning a second date! Your curse is finally up! We should go shopping before your date! I told you he's a nice guy! I'm so excited!"

Jang Mi apologized and said she would call later, feeling too tired to deal with everything right now.

On Monday, Amy was at her desk checking the server to see the wish winner for the week.

"No way!" she exclaimed. "Did you guys see that? Our lucky intern won first place?" she added,

"No way! Is the system crashed or what?"Jeremy replied,

"No, I don't think so, the security told me that the new intern stayed all night working Friday, but I didn't expect her to do all this work! She's really something!" ," Amy said .

Jeremy starts complaining: "What about my steak? I didn't eat breakfast so I could eat well today. That's not fair!"

In the next office, Lee Hoo was reading the weekly results on the server. He was astonished. Did she want to eat steak that badly? Then he remembered how she looked the next day and kept wondering.

Amidst all this fuss, Jang Mi entered the office, repeating to herself, "I finally figured it out, I figured it out." Amy and the others started congratulating her and making jokes, but she didn't listen to a word and ran directly to Lee Hoo's office. "Well, someone can't wait to get her steak," Amy affirmed.

Jang Mi entered Lee Hoo's office and said, "Hello, sir. Did you check the results? I won! I want my wish." Lee Hoo replied, "Yes, nice work, Miss Jang Mi," and he proceeded to pull out his credit card to give her. "So, you want a ste..." Jang Mi interrupted, "Go on a date with me!"

He was surprised, looking as if his soul had left his body. "What?" he asked. She repeated firmly, "Go on a date with me!!!"
