Chapter 115 - Sin #4 — The Unrenewed Mind

"Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is—His good, pleasing and perfect will."

— Romans 12:2 (NIV)

The unrenewed mind is a mind that thinks, reasons, and reacts just like the world. It may claim belief in God, but it still draws its values, goals, and truth from culture, emotion, or popular opinion. It remains unchanged by the Spirit because it is unsubmitted to the Word.

When a person is saved, their soul is redeemed—but their mind must be retrained. Salvation is instant; transformation is a process. If that process is neglected, the mind remains worldly—filled with old thoughts, old habits, and old patterns that oppose the life of faith.

Signs of an Unrenewed Mind

Thinks like the world. It values wealth, popularity, image, and comfort above righteousness, truth, and obedience.

Confused about right and wrong. It excuses sin as "normal," "harmless," or "personal choice."

Lacks spiritual discernment. It cannot clearly see what is from God and what is not.

Easily influenced. It conforms to trends, emotions, or pressure rather than being rooted in Scripture.

Stagnant spiritual growth. It resists conviction, avoids repentance, and clings to past behaviors.

Paul warns believers not to conform to the pattern of this world—that means not to copy its values, mimic its morals, or absorb its mindset. But resisting the world requires more than willpower. It requires a renewed mind.

The Power of a Renewed Mind

A renewed mind doesn't just avoid sin—it desires truth. It becomes sensitive to God's will. It is no longer driven by fear, lust, or pride but by faith, peace, and righteousness. It understands that God's ways are higher, even when they are unpopular or uncomfortable.

A renewed mind:

Thinks with clarity. It sees the world through the lens of Scripture.

Walks in obedience. It submits to God's instructions, even when difficult.

Discerns spiritual truth. It recognizes deception and clings to what is good.

Desires purity. It rejects thoughts that defile and chooses what uplifts.

Reveals Christ. It thinks, speaks, and acts in ways that reflect Jesus.

"Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus." (Philippians 2:5)

How to Renew Your Mind

1. Read the Word Daily

"Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path." (Psalm 119:105)

God's truth cleanses, corrects, and realigns your thinking. The more you read, the more you think like Him.

2. Reject Every Lie

"We take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ." (2 Corinthians 10:5)

Don't let ungodly thoughts go unchecked. Identify them, reject them, and replace them with truth.

3. Meditate on Truth

"Whatever is true… noble… right… think about such things." (Philippians 4:8)

The mind is shaped by repetition. Fill it with Scripture, worship, sermons, and godly counsel.

4. Obey Promptly

"Do not merely listen to the word… Do what it says." (James 1:22)

Renewal happens through obedience. When you act on truth, your mind is trained to follow God's ways.

Prayer for a Renewed Mind

"Father, I surrender my thoughts to You. I don't want to think like the world anymore. Cleanse my mind. Renew my perspective. Help me to reject every lie and meditate on Your Word daily. Shape my thoughts to reflect Yours—holy, pure, and pleasing in Your sight. Let my mind be a dwelling place for Your wisdom and peace. In Jesus' name, Amen."
