Chapter 81 - Sin #14 — Letting Music Glorify Sin Enter Your Heart

"Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly… with psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs."

— Colossians 3:16 (ESV)

What you hear, you begin to hold.

Music is one of the most powerful forces that enters the human soul. It bypasses logic, speaks directly to emotion, and stays in the memory longer than most sermons or speeches. That's why it's one of the enemy's most effective tools—especially when it glorifies sin.

Letting music that exalts rebellion, lust, pride, or darkness enter your heart through your ears is not just "a vibe"—it's an invitation. It invites compromise, hardens your conscience, and tunes your soul to a different frequency than the voice of God.

The Ear That Welcomes Corrupt Music Cannot Be Full of the Word

The Bible is clear: what fills your ears will eventually fill your heart. You cannot saturate your mind with music that celebrates sin and expect to remain spiritually strong.

"A good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart… For the mouth speaks what the heart is full of."

— Luke 6:45 (NIV)

Music teaches. Music influences. And if it teaches you to lust, rage, covet, or boast, then it is actively discipling you—away from God.

What Does Music That Glorifies Sin Sound Like?

This type of music is not always obviously wicked. Sometimes, it's subtle. It may sound beautiful, emotional, catchy, or even artistic—but the message leads the heart astray. You may be consuming dangerous lyrics if they:

Promote or normalize sexual sin

Encourage violence, revenge, or hatred

Glorify materialism and greed

Feed pride and self-worship

Make rebellion and disrespect seem admirable

Use God's name in vain or mock faith

Cause you to feel heavy, angry, lustful, or numb afterward

The enemy doesn't always shout—sometimes he sings. And if the melody is sweet, many won't notice the poison in the lyrics.

The Spiritual Effects of Sinful Music

Music is never just background noise. It shapes atmosphere, mood, and mindset. When you continually expose your ears to sinful songs, it will:

Desensitize you to spiritual truth

Weaken your appetite for God's Word

Make sinful thoughts or fantasies seem more acceptable

Create confusion between your faith and your feelings

Plant seeds that grow into strongholds over time

"Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind."

— Romans 12:2 (ESV)

You cannot renew your mind while pouring the world into your ears daily.

How to Guard Your Heart From Sinful Music

1. Test Every Song by Its Message

Ask: What is this teaching me? What fruit does it produce in me? If it exalts sin or self, reject it.

(Ephesians 5:11 – "Have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness, but rather expose them.")

2. Replace, Don't Just Remove

You don't have to live in silence. There is music that glorifies God, inspires joy, and strengthens your spirit. Fill your playlists with songs of life, not death.

(Psalm 33:1–3 – "Sing joyfully to the Lord… play skillfully, and shout for joy.")

3. Pay Attention to Your Reactions

How do you feel after listening to it? Is your mind at peace or stirred toward temptation?

(Galatians 5:16 – "Walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.")

4. Be Honest With God About What You Like

Sometimes we enjoy songs that don't honor God. Don't pretend. Bring your struggle to Him and ask Him to realign your desires.

(Psalm 51:6 – "You desired faithfulness even in the womb; you taught me wisdom in that secret place.")

5. Lead by Example

If you have influence—over friends, siblings, or children—what you play matters. Your music choices preach louder than your words.

(Matthew 5:16 – "Let your light shine before others…")

Prayer for Pure Musical Appetite

"Lord, I admit that I've filled my ears with songs that did not honor You. I've let sinful messages settle into my mind and heart through music. Please forgive me. Cleanse my thoughts. Change my appetite. Teach me to love what is holy—even in music. Let the words I listen to reflect Your truth, and let the melodies in my life lift up Your name. I give my playlists to You. Shape them, and shape me. In Jesus' name, Amen."
