I ducked into the subway entrance, found a quiet corner, and quickly dialed Jay back. My fingers trembled slightly as I waited through the rings. The call went straight to voicemail.
"Jay, it's Aurelia. I got your calls. Call me back as soon as you can."
I hung up, anxiety gnawing at me. Jay never called unless it was important.
My phone buzzed with a text from an unknown number: "Need a real ride somewhere? -Tristan"
I hesitated, then glanced at the subway map. The trip to my office would take nearly an hour by train, with two transfers. After the week I'd had, the thought of crowded platforms and prying eyes was exhausting.
"How did you get my number?" I texted back.
"I may have glanced at your phone when I charged it. Security purposes only."
I rolled my eyes but couldn't help the small smile that tugged at my lips. "That's called invasion of privacy."
His reply was immediate. "That's called being thorough. Still need a ride?"
