Chapter 138 - The Weight of Consequence

Julian's POV

I caught Aurelia as she collapsed, her body frighteningly light in my arms. Fear gripped my chest as I cradled her against me, her face ashen and still.

"Aurelia!" I patted her cheek gently. No response.

Tristan stepped forward, reaching for her. "Let me take her—"

"Back off," I snarled, my wolf rising to the surface. "She's my mate."

"A fact you conveniently remembered only after she collapsed," Tristan growled back. "She needs medical attention, not your possessive bullshit."

My eyes flashed amber as I pulled Aurelia closer. "I'll take care of her."

"Like you took care of your daughter?" Tristan's words struck like a physical blow.

I nearly lunged at him then, but Aurelia's limp form in my arms stopped me. Her breathing was shallow, her skin cold to the touch.

"She needs help," I said, turning toward my car. "I'm taking her home."

"This isn't over, Valois," Tristan called after me. "She deserves better than you."
