"So sweet! I haven't had something this delicious in a long time."

That was Lucien D. Blackthorn's honest reaction.

After weeks of bland, nutrient-heavy hospital meals, the bright, citrusy burst of the orange was refreshing. For a moment, it made him forget the ache in his bones and the weariness in his limbs.

Seeing his brightened expression, Eriri couldn't help but smile, realizing she might've overthought the situation earlier.

She patiently continued peeling the orange and fed him slice after slice.

"Eat slowly. There's still plenty left," she reminded him gently, watching him devour it like he hadn't eaten in days.

Once the fruit was gone, Lucien leaned back against his pillow, satisfied.

Being fed by such a beautiful girl—he thought—even if only for a moment, all the pain he'd endured lately felt worthwhile.

They shifted into casual conversation, talking about recent school gossip.

"Lucien, you wouldn't believe it—someone confessed to Kasumigaoka-senpai yesterday!"

"Seriously? Kasumigaoka-senpai really is popular. What happened? Did she turn him down again?"

"Not exactly..."

"Oh?"

"The guy was the captain of the school basketball team. She told him that if the team makes it to the national tournament, then she'd consider dating him."

"That's... a pretty clever rejection."

"Right? Everyone knows how hopeless our team is. We can't even get past regionals. It's clearly a soft no."

"And how did the guy take it?"

"He said he won't give up. He promised to work hard and lead the team to nationals."

"Relentless, huh? Gotta respect that."

"You know what's even crazier? Right after that, the football team captain also confessed."

"Wait, what? And?"

"She just ignored him."

"Why's that?"

"Because our football team might actually make it to nationals!"

Lucien burst out laughing. "That sounds exactly like something Kasumigaoka Utaha would do."

Eriri laughed with him, then peeled another orange, eating a few slices and feeding Lucien again.

Time passed quickly.

When Lucien's mother, returned from her errands, Eriri packed up to leave.

Before she walked out, she mentioned her family was traveling to Kyoto for the weekend, so she wouldn't be visiting for the next couple of days.

"But I'll bring back some Kyoto sweets for you and your mom!"

---

During the weekend, Eriri was away in Kyoto with her parents. Without her daily visits, Lucien felt lonely. The urge to draw faded. The atmosphere in the hospital room became dull and suffocating.

Lucien felt like if things went on like this, he'd develop depression before his cancer could even claim him.

He longed to go outside—to see the blue skies, the blooming flowers, to feel the breeze. But his body wouldn't let him. He was tethered to the bed.

Still, he pushed himself to draw.

Over the weekend, he managed to complete Chapters 5 and 6 of the second volume of Attack on Titan, the series he published under his pen name, Whale.

Volume 2 consisted of Chapters 5 through 9. Chapter 5 picked up right after the shocking ending of Volume 1. The town was under siege by Titans, and the trainee corps—including Eren, Mikasa, and Armin—were thrown into the chaos.

The battle was brutal. Trainees were ripped apart, devoured, or crushed. It was a massacre.

Through flashbacks intertwined with the action, readers learned more about Eren's past and the trauma he carried. These emotional beats fleshed out the characters, making them richer and more relatable.

As he worked, Lucien couldn't help but admire the original author, Hajime Isayama. The pacing, paneling, emotional depth, and the sheer brutality of the storytelling—it was all masterful.

"Isayama-sensei really was brilliant in the early arcs," Lucien muttered to himself, shaking his head in awe.

He especially appreciated how Attack on Titan wasn't just an action-packed manga—it wove deep themes about freedom, survival, and humanity into its brutal plotlines.

But then he remembered the ending.

"Still don't understand what he was thinking with that final arc…"

Some fans online had joked that Isayama made the ending painful just to make readers suffer.

Lucien smirked and sighed. The thought annoyed him more than he cared to admit.
