Chapter 28 — Serialized Sparks

"That's all I've drawn for now," said Lucien D. Blackthorn, gently closing the sketchbook.

"Okay..." Eriri nodded, a mix of reluctance and curiosity flickering in her eyes.

Though some of the scenes didn't entirely match her taste, she had undeniably been pulled into the vibrant, comedic energy of the manga. She couldn't help but wonder how Rukawa Kaede would respond to Sakuragi Hanamichi's chaotic antics in the next chapters.

Rukawa is the real protagonist, she thought to herself.

Lucien glanced at her thoughtfully. "Sawamura-san, what did you think after reading it?"

"What do I think?" Eriri leaned back, crossing her arms.

Honestly, Slam Dunk didn't captivate her the same way Attack on Titan had — it lacked that intense, suffocating tension. But it was charming in a completely different way. The energy, the absurd comedy, the expressive characters — they all came together to create something light-hearted and delightful.

"The story is... fun. Lively. You actually made me laugh out loud a few times." She gave him a look. "That's rare."

Lucien smiled quietly.

"As for your art — it's outstanding, as always. You've definitely maintained or even surpassed your quality from Attack on Titan. The style fits the story perfectly."

She paused, then added, "It might not be mainstream, but with your talent, even a sports manga could find its audience."

Lucien nodded thoughtfully.

She wasn't wrong. Slam Dunk had always used its humor as a warm-up, easing readers into the world before building toward emotional resonance and exhilarating competition. The cheerful early chapters weren't the point — they were the path.

Later, that same story would deliver intensity, tears, pride — everything.

But right now, it needed to make people laugh.

"I still think it'd be better if Rukawa Kaede were the main character," Eriri muttered with a sigh.

Lucien raised an eyebrow, clearly amused.

He hadn't expected much from her evaluation — after all, she wasn't the target demographic. And yet… she liked it.

Maybe she just really likes cool, brooding types, he thought.

"Actually," he said aloud, "Rukawa is also the protagonist in a sense. He's not the lead like Sakuragi, but his presence spans the whole story. He's just as important."

Eriri's eyes brightened instantly. "Really? Then I'm looking forward to more!"

She stared at the pages again, eyes lingering on Rukawa's confident expression.

Lucien laughed softly to himself. Yep, it's definitely about Rukawa for her.

"Sawamura-san, do you want to keep reading as I draw more?"

"Of course!" she said, without hesitation.

She had seen what Lucien was capable of with Attack on Titan. His ability to build worlds, flesh out characters, and stir emotions was undeniable. Slam Dunk may be light-hearted now, but she had faith it would become something greater.

"Actually," Lucien said, turning serious, "I was hoping to ask a favor. Could you help me publish this online? As a serial."

Eriri blinked. "Online? You mean, like a web manga?"

He nodded. "I'd like to post it from the social media account you created for me. No contests, no magazine submissions."

She frowned slightly. "Why not go through Manga Jump? This fits a comedy-sports niche — they might like it."

Lucien gave a half-smile. "They're already planning to serialize Attack on Titan. I doubt they'd let one author serialize two different stories at the same time."

Eriri hesitated. That was true. Most editors would push for focus.

"So… you're not continuing Attack on Titan?" she asked, a little disappointed.

"I am," he reassured her quickly. "Once I finish the first volume of Slam Dunk, I'll return to Attack on Titan. I promise."

"Alright," she said softly. "But don't overwork yourself. You're still recovering."

"I only draw for half an hour a day. I'll be fine."

"Hmmph. I'm not worried about you." She turned away slightly.

Lucien grinned. "Then what's with the weird expression?"

"It's not weird!" she huffed. "I'm just... amazed. You draw more than ten pages in half an hour. A normal mangaka would be working from morning till night."

"Haha, I'll take that as a compliment."

"I'm just stating facts…" she muttered. "Anyway, I'll help. I'll post the three episodes online tonight."

"Thank you, really," Lucien said with sincerity.

"You're welcome." She glanced at the sketchbook again. "So... what's the plan moving forward?"

"The first volume has nine chapters. I'll do one or two each day. Is it okay if you come by after school to pick up the manuscripts?"

"No problem. It's on the way anyway."

She gave him a reassuring smile — one that made Lucien's heart beat just a little faster.

She truly didn't see this as a burden. In fact, there was a faint sparkle in her eyes, as though she looked forward to this little routine.
