Chapter 1 - Parallel Losses

Jamie Tamil, born in Chennai, India, lived in the warmth of his mother's love until her sudden death when he was just three years old. The loss shattered his once-stable world, leaving his father drowning in grief and alcohol. Within a couple of months of her death, Jamie's father moved them to the United States of America, unable to be around those who reminded him of his dead wife. At seven years old, Jamie is placed into the California foster system due to his father's drinking and neglect.

Lydia Devi, born in Los Angeles, California, grew up in chaos with her twin sister under the care of a young single mother trying to make ends meet. At the age of four, Lydia and Talia entered the foster care system when their mom, Priya(23), can no longer take care of them on her own due to her declining health. Shuffled through the foster care system, Lydia faced instability and loss, each new home carving deeper wounds into her fragile spirit.

Though their worlds were miles apart, Jamie and Lydia's parallel losses set them on paths of pain, resilience, and eventual survival, unknowingly laying the groundwork for their fateful connection years later.

A Fleeting Connection:

Jamie and Lydia's paths crossed when they were both seven, in a foster home that was far from ideal but offered a fleeting chance for connection. Jamie, a quiet and guarded boy still healing from fresh physical and emotional wounds, quickly caught the attention of Lydia, who, despite her own struggles, radiated a warmth that drew him in. Both were outsiders in their own ways—two children searching for solace in a world that had shown them little kindness.

They found their refuge in each other and in the woods behind their foster home, where they built a hidden treehouse from scraps. It became their sanctuary, a place to escape the yelling of their foster parents and the unrelenting hardships of their lives. Within those walls of wood and dreams, they shared whispered secrets, laughter, and moments of innocent hope. At 11, one chaotic evening, when the world seemed to unravel around them, Jamie kissed Lydia—an act of pure, childlike affection born from their shared need for connection and safety.

But their bond was misunderstood and cruelly punished. Their foster mother discovered them in the treehouse and lashed out, labeling Jamie a predator and demanding his removal. That night, Lydia watched helplessly from the top of the stairs as Jamie was packed off, a police officer dragging him away while he reached out for her one last time. Her screams for him echoed unanswered as the door closed, severing their bond.

The Scars of Separation:

The separation left scars that neither could fully heal from. Lydia grew withdrawn, her once-bubbly nature replaced by anger and sadness, while Jamie's guilt and shame added to his already heavy burden. Though they never saw each other again, their memories of those fleeting years together would haunt and shape them both, their bond a lingering thread through the fabric of their lives.

At age 12, Jamie's life changed when he was placed with the Patel family. Arjun Patel, a retired Bollywood and Hollywood actor, and his wife Jiya, an accomplished internal medicine doctor, and their biological daughter Sonia then 14, opened their hearts and home to Jamie. The Patels provided Jamie with stability, love, and the cultural connection he had longed for. Under their care, he thrived academically, graduating high school one year early and earning a scholarship to UCLA to study Pre-Med. His relentless drive led him to pursue a career in pediatric emergency medicine, determined to help vulnerable children like the one he once was.

After they were separated, Lydia wasn't so lucky. She went to a group home, followed by three more foster homes. The third home though, was actually good. They wanted to help Lydia. They her into therapy, and when her health became an issue, they took her to a pediatrician. However, before any answer to Lydia's health could be given, Lydia is involved in a car accident with her foster parents; she is the sole survivor. Lydia suffers from a moderate traumatic brain injury, broken ribs, cuts and bruises. Lingering effects of the TBI are migraines, tremors in hands, memory issues, and confusion. She was discharged from the hospital far too soon, and placed in the worst possible foster home. For nearly three years, Lydia suffers medical neglect, causing an undiagnosed condition to worsen, physical abuse, mental abuse, emotional abuse, and sexual abuse at the hands of her foster parents. When she tries to report it, she is made to look unstable and called a liar.

Threads of Fate:

It is the summer of 2026. Jamie and Lydia are both sixteen years old, their lives worlds apart yet still quietly shaped by the echo of what once was. Jamie, now living a structured, love-filled life with the Patels, is preparing for college, volunteering at a children's hospital, and staying grounded in his mission to protect kids like the boy he used to be. Lydia, however, remains trapped—still living with the foster parents who abuse her behind closed doors, her health deteriorating, her spirit fraying. No one sees the truth. No one listens. But fate, unpredictable and patient, has plans of its own. The threads of their story, once violently severed, begin to stir again. Somewhere beneath the weight of silence and survival, a reunion is coming. One that could change everything.
