The first thing Kaelthar noticed was the air.

Cool, fresh, alive—different from the still perfection of his personal dimension. It carried scents of the city, faint traces of car exhaust, the warmth of food stalls starting to open, and the restless hum of human activity. For a moment, he simply stood there, eyes half-closed, letting it wash over him.

Behind him, the girls emerged one by one, each reacting in their own way.

Rias stretched her arms above her head, her crimson hair gleaming in the sunlight. "Finally," she breathed, a genuine smile tugging at her lips. "I've missed this."

Akeno tilted her head, lips curling into a teasing grin. "You say that as if you've been locked away for years, Rias. Weren't you outside just last week?"

Rias shot her a glare. "That was different. It was only a short visit—and I didn't get to enjoy it properly. This…" she gestured at the world before them, "this feels different."

"Hmm, excuses," Akeno said with a soft laugh, her voice carrying that mischievous lilt Kaelthar had grown accustomed to. "You just don't want to admit you dragged me and Koneko out here last time, only to spend most of the day shopping."

Koneko, who had been quietly observing their exchange, nodded without hesitation. "She did."

Rias's cheeks colored faintly. "T-that was for research purposes!"

"Research," Akeno echoed, amused. "For what exactly? Which dress makes you look cutest when you're trying to impress someone?" Her eyes flicked toward Kaelthar, the teasing in them unmistakable.

Kaelthar raised a brow but said nothing. He had learned by now that stepping into the middle of their playful quarrels only fueled the fire.

Rias's blush deepened, though she lifted her chin with defiance. "It was still research. A lady must always present herself properly. Unlike some people who rely solely on charm and a teasing smile."

Akeno chuckled, unfazed. "Oh? You've been paying attention to my charm?"

The crimson-haired heiress huffed and turned away, muttering something under her breath.

Kaelthar allowed a small smile to form, his gaze drifting over the bustling streets of Kuoh. Mortals went about their lives, blissfully unaware of the beings in their midst. It was almost amusing—how fragile reality seemed here, and yet how stubbornly it persisted.

So fragile… and yet this world endures. Perhaps that's why I find it intriguing.

"Feels strange, doesn't it?" A voice tugged him from his thoughts. Rias had stepped closer, her expression softer now. "After so much time in your dimension, being out here again feels almost… surreal."

Kaelthar regarded her for a moment, then nodded. "The contrast is sharp. My world was built to be stable, unchanging. Out here, things shift constantly—even in the air, the sound, the flow of mana."

Rias tilted her head, curious. "Do you dislike it?"

"No," Kaelthar said quietly. His gaze followed a pair of children running past, their laughter echoing through the street. "It reminds me of what cannot be controlled. And that has its own beauty."

For a moment, Rias simply looked at him, her usual confidence tempered by something gentler. Then, perhaps to dispel the weight of his words, she smiled. "Then let's make the most of it. No training, no planning, just… living. At least for a little while."

"Agreed," Akeno added, linking her arms with Rias in mock solidarity. "Besides, it'll be fun to see how long Kaelthar lasts before he grows restless."

"I give him two hours," Koneko said flatly.

The group laughed, and Kaelthar found himself smirking despite their jabs. He didn't bother to correct them; perhaps they were right.

They wandered through Kuoh, the streets buzzing with life. The sun was high now, spilling warmth over tiled rooftops and casting long shadows between buildings. Street vendors called out to passersby, the smell of grilled food and sweet bread weaving through the air.

Rias paused in front of a small café, her eyes lighting up. "This place… it's still here!"

"You're acting like an old woman reminiscing about her youth," Akeno teased.

"It's been months, Akeno. That's practically forever."

"Not for us," Koneko said, though her gaze lingered on the display case filled with cakes.

Rias caught it and smirked knowingly. "We'll stop inside."

Kaelthar followed them in, the bell above the door chiming softly. The café was cozy, filled with the low murmur of conversation and the clink of teacups. The girls settled into a booth, and Kaelthar slid in beside them, listening to their chatter as they placed their orders.

Part of him found this mundane, even trivial. And yet, another part recognized the value—moments like these were the threads that wove their bonds tighter.

Strange… once I would have dismissed this as a distraction. Now I find myself reluctant to break it.

When the food arrived, Akeno leaned toward him, her eyes glimmering with curiosity. "So, Kaelthar… what's the real reason you agreed to bring us out today? You're not usually one for leisure."

Rias perked up at the question, clearly wondering the same.

Kaelthar considered his answer carefully. Out loud, he said, "Because you wanted it."

"Just like that?" Rias asked, surprised.

"Just like that," he repeated evenly.

The girls exchanged glances, and for once, neither had a witty remark ready. Rias's expression softened, while Akeno's smile held a warmth that lacked its usual mischief.

Koneko, true to herself, simply reached for her cake and muttered, "That's enough reason."

Later, as they stepped back into the sunlight, Rias let out a content sigh. "I really did miss this."

"Don't act like you were locked away," Akeno quipped again, though her tone was lighter now. "Still… it is nice."

Kaelthar walked a pace ahead, his hands clasped behind his back. Outwardly calm, inwardly thoughtful.

The world feels… unsettled. There's something lingering in the air, beyond mortal senses. A trace of something ancient, faint yet insistent. I cannot name it yet. But I will find it.

He glanced back at the three of them, their laughter ringing through the street. For now, he let it go.

Whatever shadows moved unseen, they would reveal themselves in time. And Kaelthar was not afraid.

If anything… he was intrigued.
