Chapter 191 - The motive is unclear

Passing through the woods and crossing the artificial lake, with the favor of the wind, Zilingers managed to shake off his pursuers. He looked around, planning to feign a dive into the Tassock River along the water channel and then turn to run into the economic center of Beckland, the Hillsdon District. Just then, his vision suddenly blurred, and he saw the colors in the darkness become unusually intense. The green trees turned greener, the red fruits redder, and the dark water surface darker. Everything was like a canvas splashed with oil paints. Above the obscured Crimson Moon, there were countless transparent shadows of indescribable shapes and clear lights of different colors, each containing mysterious knowledge. Zilingers found himself pausing in mid-air, with the dark water surface rising beneath him, and pale hands reaching out from beneath it. Oh no! Zilingers realized he had fallen into an ambush. And the strength of the ambushers was definitely not low! A huge human-shaped skeleton suddenly appeared before his eyes. This monster was over four meters tall, with black flames burning in its eye sockets, and its bones were illusory and hazy. Zilingers stared at the enemy without emotion, a cold smile curling at the corner of his mouth. At the same time, the glove on his left hand shone with a brilliant light, as if it were made of pure gold. Zilingers leaned back, spreading his arms wide as if embracing the sun. A pure and intense light suddenly descended from the sky, enveloping the huge skeleton. The entire oil-painted world shook violently, and the pale hands beneath the dark water evaporated one by one. This was the extraordinary ability of the "Priest of Light"! This was the extraordinary ability of Sequence 5 on the "Sun" path! This was the bane of the undead! The brilliant light column dissipated, and the huge skeleton's black flames in its eye sockets instantly went out. Then it became transparent and dissipated into the air piece by piece. Before Zilingers could use the ability of the "Priest of Light" again to break the oil-painted world, his expression froze. He saw another huge skeleton appear on his left, nearly four meters tall, with black flames burning in its eye sockets, exactly the same as the previous monster. One after another, the same skeleton monsters emerged around Zilingers, one, two, three... more than a hundred in total! The hundreds of pairs of black-flame burning eyes simultaneously focused on the target. And below, the dark water surface was rising higher and higher, almost touching Zilingers' feet. Pale, illusory hands grew out one after another, constantly waving upwards, desperately trying to grasp at a lifeline. ......

"Spread out and chase him. Try to surround him," Cardinal Es. Snake of the Storm Church commanded. In the sudden gust of the hurricane, he rose into the air and flew in the direction where Zilin Ges had fled.

Duke Negan and the others did not join the "Penitents". Considering their status, they stood by the window or on the balcony, watching. At this moment, the panicked nobles gradually calmed down.

Because of the previous darkness and the continuous cries and shouts, they did not know exactly what had happened, only that the duke might have been attacked by an assassin.

Alger Wilson gritted his teeth and ran out of Duke Negan's mansion, circling around the municipal park opposite and heading towards the Hillsdon District.

Even if there was only a glimmer of hope, he did not want to miss it!

Suddenly, he heard a voice carried by the wind:

"Don't chase him anymore."

Don't chase him anymore? Cardinal Es. Snake's voice... Alger ran a few more steps before stopping and turning around in confusion to look up at the sky.

He saw Cardinal Es. Snake, dressed in a black robe embroidered with the symbol of the Storm, hovering above the trees and artificial lake, gazing down at an angle.

Alger frowned, not having time to think about the reason, and rushed towards the cardinal's position.

As he got closer, with the help of his "Navigator" ability, he could see more clearly.

The "Song of God" had a square face without any expression, but his posture showed his solemnity. His grizzled hair peeked out from under the black soft hat and swayed gently in the wind, setting off his unusually serious silver eyes.

Alger withdrew his gaze and ran out of the forest.

Suddenly, a cold lake surface shimmering with crimson moonlight appeared in his eyes, and a tall figure near the water's edge on this side.

This figure had a distinctive wide chin, with brown hair tied in an ancient warrior's topknot at the back of his head, and his emerald eyes were cold and empty.

Zilin Ges!

"Admiral of the Hurricane" Zilin Ges!

Alger was stunned at first, then both shocked and delighted, hardly believing his eyes and suspecting that the darkness had caused him to have an illusion.

Before he could react further, he suddenly saw Zilin Ges's face rapidly rotting, oozing yellowish-green pus, and pieces of flesh and bone falling off one after another.

Crack! Crack! Crack!

Zilin Ges's face was reduced to bones, and his two empty eye sockets fell out of their sockets and hit the ground by the lake one after the other.

With a cracking sound, Zilin Ges completely disintegrated, his clothes spread out on the ground, covering the rotten flesh and white bones, as well as the flickering light.

In less than twenty seconds, one of the seven pirate generals, Zilin Ges, died strangely and simply right in front of Alger.

This terrifying scene was deeply imprinted in Alger's mind, making him suspect that he was having a terrifying nightmare.

What happened?

Didn't Zilin Ges manage to escape successfully?

How could he die so strangely and simply here?

What exactly happened to him that he lost his life in such a short time...

He was a "Wind Favored" of Sequence 6. He was the master of "Crawling Hunger"!

Who did it?

Why kill Zilin Ges...

Just as Alger was unable to stop his thoughts from flashing through his mind, he heard the magnetic voice of the "Song of God", Es. Snake:

"Did you tell anyone else about this information?"

"Does anyone else know about this information?"

Alger immediately regained his composure, looked at Zilin Ges's remains, and explained calmly as he had prepared:

"I reported it to you, Cardinal, as soon as I received the information."

At this point, he couldn't help but grumble in his heart: If it weren't for Es. Snake going for a walk by the Tasoq River and making me spend a considerable amount of time looking for him, Zilin Ges might not have been able to escape from Duke Negan's mansion at all! Of course, he wouldn't dare voice such resentment in front of a high-sequence power. He could only continue to describe respectfully and humbly:

"Even the person who directly obtained the intelligence sacrificed their life, while those who relayed it never opened the letter. I can confirm this."

"But I can't be sure if there's still a leak from the source of the intelligence. Since we know about it, others might as well."

As Alger spoke, he also began to speculate in his mind about who had killed "Admiral Hurricane" Zilingers:

Was it the person or organization that had commissioned Zilingers to assassinate Duke Nigen? But since Zilingers had managed to escape without revealing anything, there was no reason to kill him... If it were me, I would have let Zilingers lie low and strike again when everyone thought he had fled Beckland...

And Zilingers always trusted only himself. He wouldn't have told anyone about the assassination plan in advance. Duke Nigen often held gatherings for the September proposals, so there was no shortage of opportunities. Besides Zilingers himself, no one could be sure when and where he would strike... Unless, unless it was a "Seer"...

The possibility was very low...

Other forces? Impossible. Miss Justice discovered the problem on the spot and sent the intelligence by praying to Mr. Fool. Besides us, there couldn't be any other organization that received the news at the same time...

Mr. Fool... Alger was startled and thought of a possibility:

It was one of Mr. Fool's followers who did it!

They happened to be in Beckland and thus "happened" to help!

The more Alger thought about it, the more he felt this guess was close to the truth:

Only members and subordinates of the "Tarot Society" could know the intelligence first!

Only a follower of Mr. Fool could make the incident seem strange and purposeless!

While Alger was lost in thought, Archbishop Snake was silent for a moment and then said to the other "Penitents" who had arrived one after another:

"Zilingers is dead. A high-sequence power killed him, or perhaps used a seal of the same rank. But this is quite dangerous and unlikely."

"After a preliminary observation, I think it was a high-sequence power from the 'Death' path, perhaps a member of the Spirit Cult, but not the one I know. It could also be a member of another secret organization."

"The motive is unknown."

The Spirit Cult originated in the South Continent. It was said that it was initially established by some descendants of Death trying to resurrect Death. After the South Continent was invaded and colonized, they nearly perished but eventually survived and spread to the countries of the North Continent.

High-sequence power... Yes, only a high-sequence power could kill Zilingers in such a short time! One of Mr. Fool's followers is a high-sequence power... That's a "demigod"! Alger looked at the rotten flesh and bones again, his entire state very detached, as if he had lost all emotions and was just staring blankly at everything.

If one day I betray Mr. Fool... He suddenly had such a thought.

Immediately, the terrifying image of Zilingers' rapid decay flashed through his mind.

Alger couldn't help but shiver and lower his head.

At the same time, he also relaxed.

Since there was no way to escape and it was difficult to resist, the only option was to be loyal.

Phew... With Zilingers dead, no one can use that secret to threaten me anymore! He exhaled and finally calmed down. ......

In the Duke of Nigen's mansion, Audrey Hall, who was discussing the recent assassination attempt with her mother and the noble ladies in the lounge, saw her father, the Earl of Hall, appear at the door with his two neat little moustaches.

She made an excuse to leave the lounge and went out to the balcony of the hall.

"Father, is there something wrong?" Audrey looked at the Earl of Hall with her emerald green eyes.

Her eye color came from her mother, not her father.

The Earl of Hall chuckled and said, "It's all settled, my child. You don't need to worry anymore."

"Hmm... Did you tell anyone else that Baron Gramil was an impostor?" Audrey asked firmly, shaking her head.

I only told a being that's almost like a deity... She added silently in her heart.

She thought for a moment and then described in more detail, "After I told you, I went to the washroom first and then to Mother. You can ask her."

"Hmm." The Earl of Hall nodded slightly and didn't say anything more. Instead, he mentioned, "Zilingers is dead. He was killed."

"Who?" Audrey was both surprised and excited.

"We don't know. We can't even guess why the murderer wanted to kill Zilingers. It's really hard to understand." The Earl of Hall paused and then said, "It might be one person or a powerful and secretive organization."

Can't figure out the motive... A powerful and secretive organization... Could it be the followers of "The Fool" sir? Could it be our "Tarot Society"? Audrey suddenly had an epiphany.
