Chapter 43 - Searching for someone

Looking at Klein, Leonard nodded with a smile in his blue eyes and said, "Then what do you need them to provide?"

He had worked with Old Neil and others many times and naturally understood that divination required a medium, especially when the "protagonist" was not present.

Klein thought for a moment and looked at the butler, Keli, and said, "I need Elliot's clothes that he wore recently and haven't been washed yet. If there are any accessories he used to wear, that would be even better."

He tried to choose normal mediums rather than those that might cause ordinary people to have wild thoughts.

Even so, the old butler, Keli, still looked puzzled and asked, "Why?"

After asking, he added, "I have a photo of young Master Elliot."

Why? Because we need to find his whereabouts through divination... Klein didn't know how to answer for a moment.

If he told the truth, apart from the possibility of violating the confidentiality clause, the old butler, Keli, would most likely turn around and leave, tear up the contract, and curse in his heart, "These frauds! If this could work, I might as well go to the most famous medium in Ahova County!"

Leonard Mitchell chuckled and said, "Mr. Keli, my companion, well, colleague, has a peculiar pet. Its sense of smell is even more sensitive than that of a hunting dog. So we need the clothes Elliot wore and the items he used to carry to help us find him. You know, clues often only narrow down to a general area."

"As for that photo, we also need it. My companion and I must know what Elliot looks like."

The old butler, Keli, accepted this explanation and nodded slowly, "Are you waiting here or going with me to Mr. Vicrol's residence in the city?"

"Let's go together to save time." Klein replied briefly.

He wanted to test his own supernatural abilities and also had a simple desire to save others.

"Very well, the carriage is downstairs." The old butler, Keli, said as he took out a black and white photo from his pocket and handed it to Leonard.

This was a solo photo of Elliot Vicrol. He was about ten years old, with slightly long hair that almost covered his eyes. He had obvious freckles on his face and didn't look particularly distinctive.

Leonard glanced at it and then handed it to Klein.

Klein examined it carefully, put the photo in his pocket, picked up his cane, put on his hat, and followed the two in front of him out of the Blackthorn Security Company and into the carriage parked downstairs.

The interior of the carriage was quite spacious, with thick carpets and a small table for placing items.

Because of the presence of the old butler, Keli, neither Klein nor Leonard spoke. They quietly felt the carriage smoothly moving forward on the wet road under the gradually decreasing raindrops.

"Nice driver," Leonard broke the silence after a while and praised with a smile.

"Hmm," Klein responded perfunctorily.

The old butler, Keli, forced a smile and said, "Your compliment is his honor. We're almost there..."

Because they were worried about being detected by the kidnappers, the carriage didn't approach Mr. Vicrol's residence but stopped on a nearby street.

The old butler, Keli, returned alone under the rain, and while waiting, Leonard said to Klein on his own, "The reason I guessed last time had no other purpose. I just wanted to tell you that that notebook will definitely reappear, perhaps soon."

"That's really not a pleasant prediction." Klein pointed at the driver's position outside with his chin, indicating that they shouldn't discuss sensitive topics when there were others around.

Leonard whistled and turned to look out the window, where raindrops slid down the glass, leaving hazy marks that blurred the outside world.

After a while, Keli returned carrying a bag. Because he had walked too quickly, his trouser legs were covered in mud and water, and there were wet marks on the front of his clothes.

"These are the clothes young Master Elliot wore yesterday, and this is the storm amulet he used to wear."

Klein took a look and found it was a miniature set of gentleman's formal wear, including a small shirt, a small waistcoat, a small bow tie, and so on.

The storm amulet had a bronze base and was engraved with symbols representing strong winds and waves, but it didn't inspire Klein in any way.

"Now I'll tell you in detail about the kidnapping of young Master Elliot so you can narrow down the target..." The old butler, Keli, sat down and repeated the nightmare experience of the morning, hoping that the hard-to-find helpers could be of some use.

Klein and Leonard had no interest in the specific details and only cared about how many kidnappers there were, whether they showed any unusual behavior, and whether they carried weapons.

"Three," "normal," "with guns"... After getting the information they wanted, they said goodbye to the old butler Keli and hired a two-wheeled light carriage nearby.

Unlike public carriages, these hired carriages could have either four or two wheels and could be charged by the kilometer or by the hour. The former was 4 pence per kilometer within the city and 8 pence per kilometer outside the city, while the latter was 2 shillings per hour. Less than an hour was charged as one hour, and for every 15 minutes over an hour, an additional 6 pence was charged. If it was bad weather or an emergency requiring a faster speed, the price would increase.

Klein had heard from Teacher Azik that in the capital, Beckland, carriage drivers were notorious for overcharging.

For him, this was a rather luxurious experience, but he didn't need to worry about it at the moment because Leonard directly threw two 1-shilling banknotes to the carriage driver.

"Charge by the hour," Leonard instructed and then closed the carriage door.

"Where are you going?" The carriage driver, holding the two banknotes, asked with a mixture of joy and confusion.

"Wait a moment," Leonard turned to Klein.

Klein nodded slightly, took out Elliot's clothes, spread them on the carriage floor, and then wrapped the storm amulet around the tip of his cane.

He held the black cane with silver inlays and placed it upright on Elliot's clothes.

A "light ball" formed in his mind, and Klein's mood quickly calmed down. His brown eyes deepened as he entered a semi-meditative state.

He felt his "spirit" becoming lighter and more buoyant, and vaguely saw the "spirit world" that was everywhere. He silently repeated in his heart, "Elliot's location."

After seven times, his hand left the black cane, but the cane didn't fall; it remained upright, even as the carriage swayed slightly!

Fine, intangible movements came from all around, and Klein felt as if he was being watched by pairs of indifferent eyes.

During these days, he occasionally had similar feelings during meditation and in the state of spirit vision.

With a slight shiver, he gazed at the cane with his deep black eyes and repeated in his heart once more:

"Elliot's location."

As soon as he finished repeating, the silver-inlaid, wooden, black cane fell, tipping forward.

"Go straight," Klein said in a low voice as he held the cane.

His voice was slightly ethereal, as if it could penetrate into the unknown world.

This was one of the divination abilities he had mastered, called "Divination Cane for Locating Objects." The prop had to be made of wood, metal, or a combination of both.

Normally, this required two real divination canes - shaped like a straightened wire bent at a right angle, with the shorter side held and turned to determine the direction. But as a "Diviner," Klein, after practice, found that he could directly use this method to find people and could also use a cane instead of the divination canes. The direction the cane fell indicated the direction of the object to be found.

As for the Antigonus family's notes, since Klein couldn't remember their appearance at all, he couldn't look for them.

"Go straight," Leonard shouted to the driver. "I'll tell you when to turn." The coachman didn't understand at all why they had to do this, but the money in the inner pocket and the other person's willingness to pay without hesitation made him keep silent and accept it.

The carriage moved slowly, passing through one street after another.

On the way, Klein used "Divining Rod to Locate" several times to correct the direction.

When the carriage made a full circle around a building, he finally confirmed that Elliot was inside. It had only been thirty minutes since he said goodbye to the old butler, Keli.

He sent the coachman away and, without using Elliot's clothes again, directly planted the cane with the Storm Amulet wrapped around it into the ground.

His eyes darkened once more, and the few raindrops around them began to spin in place.

The cane leaned towards the front left, and Klein pointed at a staircase entrance and said, "There."

"Sometimes, I envy Old Neil. And now, I envy you too." Leonard smiled and sighed as he watched this scene.

Klein glanced at him and replied in a flat tone, "This isn't difficult. If you want, you can definitely learn it... Your inspiration should be very high, right?"

Leonard nodded and chuckled, "That's not a good thing."

He quickened his pace and walked into the staircase entrance in the fading rain.

Klein, afraid of getting his formal suit wet, almost ran to follow.

This building had only three floors, similar to an apartment building on Earth. Each floor of each entrance had only two rooms. Klein used "Divining Rod to Locate" again on the first and second floors, but the cane remained steady, pointing upwards.

They walked quietly to the third floor, and Klein placed the silver-inlaid black cane on the ground again.

Whoo!

A gentle breeze blew through the staircase, and his eyes changed color, becoming so dark that they seemed to be able to suck in souls.

Whoo whoo whoo!

It seemed that there were invisible crying sounds around them.

Klein's palm loosened, and the cane with the Storm Amulet wrapped around it stood upright magically.

He murmured "Elliot's location" again and watched as his black cane fell down, silently pointing to the room on the right.

"It should be in there." Klein picked up the cane and tapped his forehead twice.

As various "colors" deepened, he looked at the door on the right and directly saw the various "auras" inside.

"One, two, three, four... Three kidnappers and one hostage. The numbers match... One of them has a short aura. That should be Elliot... Mr. Keli said they had two shotguns and one revolver..." Klein said in a low voice.

Leonard chuckled and said, "Let me sing them a poem."

"Why be kidnappers? Can't you be civilized and happy?"

He put down the bag with Elliot's clothes and took two steps forward. His expression instantly became serene and sad.

His magnetic and deep voice slowly spread out:

"Ah, the threat of fear, the hope of crimson!

At least one thing is true: this life flies by.

One thing is true, the rest is lies,

Flowers bloom once and then fade away..."
