Chapter 42 - Apprehension Part 2

The units were already on the move toward Kansai International Airport. The helicopters led the operation, slicing through the morning air and pulling far ahead of the ferry at sea, their arrival scheduled, approximately 07:26 AM.

Below them, the ferry followed at a steady pace, heavy and deliberate, cutting through the water under constant watch.

The choppers touched down at KIX in a secured zone away from civilian traffic. Osaka Prefectural Police were already in position, vehicles revving, officers standing at attention as SAT unloaded their detainees, they've reached the mainland now. With the ferry still hours out, SAT briefed the Osaka units, recounting the arrests, the resistance, the mass disturbances, and the unexplained phenomena that had unfolded on Mikurajima overnight.

By 08:44 AM, the ferry finally reached the airport's high-speed boat terminal, and the department wasted no time. Officers moved in immediately, restraints checked, heads lowered, commands issued without hesitation. The suspects were separated and loaded into two police buses, flanked by patrol cars as the convoy rolled out of the airport.

Osaka Prefectural Police Department

The buses rolled through the gates of the station and came to a halt beneath harsh fluorescent lights. Doors slid open one by one, and the suspects were taken in, boots hitting concrete as officers pulled them into orderly lines. Any remaining sense of distance or escape vanished the moment they crossed the threshold.

The booking process began immediately. Each suspect was searched thoroughly—belts, shoes, personal items stripped and catalogued into clear evidence bags. Phones, wallets, jewelry—everything was logged, sealed, and marked with identification numbers before being carried away. Names were taken next, along with birth dates, addresses, and statements of origin, every answer typed and cross-checked without comment.

Fingerprinting followed. One by one, fingers were pressed against scanners, palms rolled and recorded, the machine chiming softly as data was uploaded. Mugshots came after—front-facing, profile, face cards rolled in. A camera flash snapped capturing faces and expressions; fear, exhaustion, unusual poses, anger, and smirks.

Medical screenings came next. Officers checked for injuries, burns, fractures—documenting every bruise and wound sustained during the island operation. Wounds were checked, brief questions asked. Finally, their rights were read aloud in a calm, practiced tone. Each suspect was informed of their status, their right to remain silent, and their right to legal counsel.

They were given the option of a phone call. Most didn't speak. Some stared at the floor. Others already knew there was no one left to call.

"Can I please call my grandma!?" - Junko
