The grocery store buzzed with quiet activity as shoppers went about their business. Between the aisles, Jin moved with a casual air, dressed in a light jacket. His basket wasn't filled with much—mainly snacks. Cooking wasn't exactly on the menu for him these days.
He tossed in a couple of energy drinks, a few bags of chips, and some protein bars handling all with his one arm . After paying at the register, he stepped outside into the cool air, the automatic doors sliding shut behind him.
As Jin walked along the sidewalk, passing a lamppost, a strange scent hit him. It was faint—like burnt spice carried on the wind. He slowed, turning his head slightly, eyes scanning the street for the source. Nothing. But the prickling sensation at the back of his neck told him something else—someone was watching him.
He exhaled slowly. The Wolverine template… it's messing with me. His senses had been growing sharper day by day, but adjusting to the heightened perception was harder than he'd expected.
Shaking his head, he kept moving, the smell fading as if it had never been there. Behind him, a bat materialized on the lamppost, its wings twitching before it took off into the sky.
Far away, in the clubroom of Kuoh Academy, Rias Gremory cut the connection with her familiar and leaned back.
"He's sharp," she said, glancing at Akeno, who was sipping tea beside her.
Akeno's lips curved into a knowing smile. "So, what will be your approach?"
Rias closed her eyes briefly, considering. "I'll invite him… and we'll see where it goes from there."
Later that night…
Jin was on his way back to his apartment after dinner at Yukihira Restaurant. The streets were quieter now, the glow of streetlights casting long shadows across the pavement.
A figure stepped from the darkness ahead. Jin recognized him instantly—Shikaku. The man's jacket was stained with blood.
Jin's eyes narrowed. "I hope you're not here for revenge. You know how that would end."
Shikaku's voice was calm but edged with weariness. "I'm not that foolish. I've seen how that ends… many times."
"Then why are you here? We're not comrades, if you came looking for that."
"I need your help," Shikaku said plainly.
Jin's brow arched. "And why would I do that? You call yourself smart, so I'm guessing you must have a reason to come to me . "
Jin thougt to himself " he must be on his last legs . "
"I have information… something I think you'd want."
Jin folded his arms. "what would that be And why do you need my help?"
Shikaku's tone hardened. "The Manji Clan wants me dead. They think I betrayed them because I was the last one to see you and came out alive."
"I thought Zero let you go," Jin said.
"He did. But the higher-ups won't listen. Now I'm a deserter."
Jin's voice cooled. "Alright. Tell me the information ."
"No." Shikaku's eyes didn't waver. "First, promise me you'll help me."
Jin studied him, silent, weighing the risk. A promise meant commitment. He needed to know if this man was not bluffing. "Is it about Kunou?" he tried, watching for any reaction.
Shikaku didn't flinch. His poker face was solid.
Jin let out a quiet breath. "You're good. Fine. I promise—if your information is useful or what i want to know , I'll help you."
Shikaku's gaze sharpened. "Your mother's accident… it wasn't an accident. It was staged."
The words hit Jin like a blade to the gut. His expression froze, every muscle tightening. Cold prickled across his skin. "…Go on."
"It was devils who told the Manji Clan to arrange it. In return, they were allowed to operate in Kuoh."
Jin's voice was low, deadly. "Which devils?"
"I don't know."
"How do you know any of this? Were you part of it?" Jin's tone carried an icy edge.
Shikaku stiffened. "No. I wasn't part of it. But the day you destroyed that last warehouse outside the city… zero drank too much. He said he never would've had to come here if the higher-ups hadn't forced him—because of their deal with the devils. Now would you help me ?"
Jin's pulse thudded in his ears. He slipped a scrap of paper to Shikaku, an address. "Go there. Stay hidden. It's secure. i will contact you later ."
Shikaku took it without a word, knowing there must be manything on jin mind right now .
As Jin walked away, his mind churned. What should he do now? Who exactly was behind it? .
By the time he reached his apartment, his thoughts were a tight knot of anger and questions. He stepped inside, shutting the door behind him—then stopped.
Moonlight spilled across his couch. A slender figure sat there, long hair catching the pale glow. She turned her head, revealing a face framed by crimson hair.
"Jin Kazama," Rias said, her voice smooth and direct. "Join my peerage."
