Chapter 40 - Low-grade sorcerers.

I stare at the grim-faced Dean. Yantuktu, is the name on his desk. What a silly name. I run my eyes around the room as he goes through the file in front of him, ignoring my presence completely.

What's with this people and hanging animal heads on the walls?

Everything bit of furniture is dark and and velvety. It screams money. It reminds me of the posh apartment I left behind. I really loved that apartment.

He pulls out a file from one of the drawers of his dark mahogany desk. His desk is so organised, he's probably a perfectionist. His pencils are arranged perfectly, according to size and colour. I have never been half as organized, except when killing people.

It's funny that Assasins are supposed to be the most organized people. I'd bet everything I have that Toshiro is more organized than this Yan-whatever guy.

"Your abilities are low-grade. Nothing deserving recommendation, in my opinion."

I shrug. I actually want to tell him that he can shove his stupid opinion down his throat. Who cares about his opinion?

He pulls a strand of his frizzy gold hair out of his face and looks down at the paper in front of him.

He flips a page with slender, well-manicured fingers.

"Hmm. No lineage? You're not a pure blood? How did you realize your sorcery abilities?"

Not the question I was expecting. What do I answer? Oh, I'll say that I woke up one morning, and I realized that something in me was different - too cheesy and cliche.

"I think it was awakened by recent traumatic events".

He narrows his grey eyes at me.

"Such as?"

"The invading monsters that are threatening an apocalypse". I say in a tight voice.

He averts his gaze immediately.

"Did you lose a family member?"

"I've lost other things".

"Mister...um...Shigaraki. Am I saying it right?"

I nod briskly.

"Mister Shigaraki, can you be more specific?"

"With all due respect, I don't see how my life story is important to this evaluation. My powers have been awakened - that's the bottom line". I say matter- of- factly.

He blinks at my words.

"I understand your...frustration. But, I'm afraid that it is part of the process. Do bear with me. Was any of your family members known for anything weird?"

"Does excessive smoking and cannibalism count?"

He blinks several times.

"Okay. This evaluation is not making any progress. Just sign the student form here". He pushes a form and a signature pen forward.

I pick up the pen and read the first few lines.

"Do I have to pay any fees?"

"None at all, Mister Shigaraki. This is a privelege school which can only be attended by invites. No form of payment is required for any of our services".

"So, after students graduate from here, what happens next? Do they just return to living normal lives?"

He looks at the unsigned paper in front of me with an impatient expression.

"They can join the Ministry of Sorcery and oversee the affairs of sorcery across the globe, or can join scouting teams. None of our students are bound by obligation, it is a matter of choice"

"Why is no one doing anything about the monster apocalypse?"

"By noone, do you mean us?"

"If the shoe fits".

"It's not our place to meddle. Our society is a secret for our own protection and that of the world's".

"But, I hope you realize that they don't only pose a threat to the outside world, they also pose a threat to your society as well".

"Sign the form, please". He says and jams his palms together as if in supplication.

I toss him a glance before I design my signature in the place designated for signatures.

"Thank you". He says and nearly snatches the paper from me.

"Your uniform would be tailored to your exact fitting and would be ready by dawn. I believe you can see yourself out".

I nod at him and leave. He hasn't seen the last of me. His mouth is a thin line, barely visible.

I walk to the door and toss him a glance over my shoulder before I leave. I walk down to the dorm quarters.

Safari, the dark skinned girl with very long dreads comes out of Toshiro's room. I wink at her and she glares at me. In just two days of being here, I know some of the popular girls here. It is mostly dominated by guys. The girls are trying to make names for themselves. It's just the system.

I turn the knob and enter the room.

Toshiro looks up at me. I turn my attention to the girl huddled by the corner of the bed.

She has taken off her hoody. Dark brown hair and blue eyes with rings of gold. Quite pretty, in my opinion.

"What's your name?"

"Angie...Angela".

"Nice name. If you're feeling better, you can leave now, but, you should note that if you try to sneak up on us again, we'll be the last thing you'll see".

She gulps at the threat, but still retains my gaze.

"You saved me. I don't know how you did it, but you saved me from the death sentence of breaking my vow. I owe you...my life".

"Your life isn't worth a damn to me, keep it. If you keep making mistakes like this, you might lose it for good".

She winces.

"No matter. I am forever indebted to you. I can be your inside woman".

"No thanks. We don't even know if we can trust you".

She looks at Toshiro.

"Let's give her a chance. She seems sincere. She knows the penalty for betrayal. We could really use her cloaking power".

I look at him. He is the most rational between us. I should listen to him.

"Only because you suggested it. One wrong move and she's dead".

She gulps again.

"How did your assessment go?"

Toshiro looks up at me.

"I was given an E, but it's still a pass. You told me the wrong spell".

I suppress my laughter. I had realized later that the spell was incorrect, but I had not bothered to tell Toshiro-kun.

"I saw the news. Almost an entire city is destroyed."

Silence.

" They are spreading faster than we can talk".
