I held my breath as Evelyn's eyelids fluttered once more. Her fingers twitched slightly against Cameron's hand, and for a moment, it seemed like she might actually wake up.
"Evelyn?" Cameron leaned forward, his voice breaking with desperate hope. "Can you hear me?"
The room fell silent, all previous arguments forgotten as everyone waited.
But Evelyn's eyes didn't open. After that brief moment of movement, she went still again, her face peaceful and unresponsive. The steady beeping of the heart monitor continued its relentless rhythm, mocking our raised hopes.
"What's happening?" Cameron's voice cracked as he turned toward the door. "Someone get the doctor! Now!"
One of Nathaniel's bodyguards immediately stepped out, and moments later, a team of medical staff rushed in. The lead doctor, a middle-aged woman with a stern face, quickly approached Evelyn's bedside.
"Everyone except immediate family needs to leave the room," she ordered, her tone leaving no room for argument.
