Chapter 1 - Flower before a Fall

I was there before the fall, when the heavens rung with the sound of Angels praise. I was there when God created Earth and the Beasts there of. I listened as God spoke of wanting to be a Savoir, to be worshiped and loved. Then watched as he created Man and then Woman. I watched as the Serpent beguiled the Woman, and as God cast his creation, Man and Woman, out of the Garden of Eden. For that was the day he named me, Alistair, Man's defender. For God sent me to watch over them. I fought alongside Michael against Lucifer and his angels. I was there on the day Lucifer and his angels were cast out of heaven. For a time there was peace.

Days faded into years while I yearned for my Father to call me home. I was growing weary from constant battle against Lucifer's fallen. I watched generation after generation of God's creation fight one another, I had lost hope for man, except for those few who feared God. For man could never love like God wanted them to. When God called me home I rejoiced for I had grown tired of the ways of Man.

Hundreds of years had passed before I resumed my post. It was now the 18 hundreds and Man were no longer vicious, beast like creatures. They were civilized. They were clothed, educated, lazy in they're homes, and no longer fearful of God. For Lucifer's fallen had beguiled them as he beguiled Eve and so, they forgot God.

One day while I was strolling the streets of a place called London. I found myself entranced with a young Woman with hair so red it looked like flames. I soon realized I was following her, and found myself wanting to know more about her. I watched as she went from shop to shop smiling, and stopping at the end to look at flowers. She picked up a small handful of roses, and walked down one of the side alleyways towards the cemetery. I followed her through the gates and to the far left hand corner, where she knelt by a little tomb stone, laid amidst bouquets of wilted flowers. It read,

Anna Rose Mahson

Beloved Wife and Mother

January 20, 1780 – March 8, 1816

It must be her mother. I left, to let her grieve in private.

Soon I found myself waiting for her at the flower market, for she went every morning and twice on Sundays, and took them to the little tomb stone in the far left of the cemetery. Today she wore a light green dress that brushed the side walk as she strolled along. She had her fiery red hair loosely up in what they call a bun. She would stop every now and then to gazing in to the windows of the shops as she made her way to the flower stands.

By looking at her the people around her would never guess she had lost her mother, her fiancé, and her father's kindness all within the last 3 months. If one were to look closely they would see the hint of a blemish on her right shoulder, just covered by her collar, which she received, about a week ago from her drunken father, for being too much like her mother.

As she reaches the first stand of the flower market, I cross the street from her so I could watch her out of the corner of my eye while I looked at newspaper articles. She reached for an orange rose which they have created with some kind of coloring, and reached for white daises, paid for them and turned to go to the cemetery. I wait and followed her shortly, like every morning. But what I don't expect was when I turned the corner from the alleyway, she stepped out and held out the colored rose,

"For you Sir. I've seen you follow me, and know you are new here. I wish to give this to you, in hope we can be friends. My name is Troyanna, but you can call me Troy." She looked at me, and for the first time, my breath caught. Her eyes were the lightest blue I had ever seen. Even lighter than the clear morning sky. She blinked and I remembered she still held out the rose. I took it from her lightly,

"Thank you, and yes I am new. My name is Alistair, I'm sorry if I startled you at all. I never meant any harm. You just had a pattern of coming here every morning, and I was curious." I said as I nodded to the cemetery.

"Aw, yes." She turned and started walking towards the cemetery, she turned slightly wanting me to follow, "My mother passed away recently, she was very frail." She had paused as we reached the front gates. "My mother had been suffering for many years since she lost my little brother in child birth."

"I'm sorry to hear. Death is never easy, no matter how young." Her lips pulled into a half smile as she nodded her head in agreement.

When we reached the little tomb stone, she bent down and placed the daises next to the flowers she had brought yesterday. "You are right, death is never easy. It's what we make out of it that counts." She said as she stood up and turned to me. I was surprised to hear such wise words from someone so young.

As we walked out of the cemetery, she turned and said goodbye, I saw a glimpse of hope for Mankind sparkle in her light blue eyes.

Days turned to weeks as I found myself making up excuses to be near her. I discovered myself taking every opportunity I could to be close to her just to see her smile, and her laugh. I realized I did not dreaded being among Man, and no longer despised them. I slowly drifted away from my post as Mans Defender, as I grew nearer to Troy. .Her eyes had a way of enchanting me and making me forget.

One day as we walked along the path in the park near her house, I felt a strange tug, something familiar about it, but I couldn't remember. Troy looked at me, "what is the matter, Alistair?" as she said my name, I remembered my post, how I had forgotten it months ago, and the strange tug was God calling me. "I must go, forgive me." I said holding her hands, she must have noticed something was off, for when I let go of her and turned to leave, I heard her say, "don't leave, I love you." I turned around to look at her but realized I was already in heaven.

"After so many years of bitterness I see you have learned what love is, and what it can do. But it comes with a price."

I turned to see God, sitting on his throne, with Michael by his side.

"Yes father what is the price?" I bow my head kneeling before him.

"By learning how to love, you may keep your post as Man's Defender, and watch over them. Or, be stripped of your wings, your title, only to be made to roam the earth with Lucifer's Fallen."

"If I keep my post, will I stay with Troy."

"No you would wait here until her time on earth was up."

"Father, then I chose Troy, for I have seen what love can do, even to the coldest of hearts. For I love her." I said looking up at God.

"Love is powerfully, she is humans and humans die, is this still your wish?"

"Death is not easy, it's what we make of it that counts."

"Aw, wise words. Then it is settled." God turned to Michael.

Two angels grabbed my arms as Michael came near me.

"As punishment, you, Alistair, Man's Defender, shall be stripped of your wings," Michael took out his sword and severed one my wings. The agony, like none other, shot throughout my body in shuddering waves.

"Alistair, Man's Defender, Shall no longer have the title of an Archangel." Another wave of pain shot through my body as he cut the other one away from m body.

"Alistair, Mans Defender, You shall no longer be of the heavenly host, and will be cast out of heaven, like Lucifer's Fallen." I looked up and saw Gods face. He had a sad smile, "your voice shall be missed." was the last thing I heard as I was thrown out of heaven.

A nagging headache woke me up. After looking around a bit I knew I was in the park where I left Troy, but she was nowhere to be found. After roaming the park for hours trying to make sense of everything. Nothing was familiar, except the old clock tower I saw a man walking out of one if the buildings and ran up to him, " sir, what is today's date?" "May 14, 1854." He gave me a curious look and went on his way. That was when I realized, exactly 50 years had passed while I was gone. Troy was long gone. I was lost, to roam the earth without her.
