Using a black cape to shield her face and hair, she blended into the darkness as she slowly walked toward the room.
She had watched Stephen leave this place not too long ago, and now, finally alone, she was able to sneak in—thanks to her hairpin, which she used to unlock the huge padlock dangling from the door.
"Now... where is the key?" the voice whispered, revealing herself to be none other than Queen Athalia.
She was desperate—desperate for his release. Not being able to see him for several days had shattered her. Walking toward the table where important documents were usually kept, she began to sift through the enormous pile.
Every second she took her time, searching for anything—anything at all—that might not only secure her son's freedom but possibly dethrone Stephen, just as he had used a secret document to ruin his father.
But unfortunately, luck wasn't on her side. There was none. Literally nothing that could help her—at least not now.
