Lila said with a laugh. "So this is how I find out? I'm honestly a little hurt."
Evelyn frowned faintly, confused by the playful accusation. "Find out what?"
"Oh please," Lila continued, clearly amused. "You didn't even think to tell me your daughter has a boyfriend."
For a brief moment, Evelyn didn't respond.
The word boyfriend lingered in the air, and unbidden, a face surfaced in her mind.
Evelyn's fingers tightened slightly around the receiver.
Still, her voice remained composed.
"Lila," she said slowly, "I'm afraid I don't know what you're referring to."
There was a pause on the line.
"You mean you really don't know?" Lila asked, surprise replacing her teasing tone.
"Know what?"
"Well," Lila said, sounding a little puzzled now, "Elena came to see me two days ago. She brought someone with her. Lucas Blackwood."
Evelyn straightened slightly in her chair.
"She brought him to you?"
